Mala question

Recommended Posts

I have Mala, AVGA, Jpac and MAME setup in a Vertical cab. I can't seem to get a resolution for the Standard Layout to display correctly (The Mala GUI). When its in 640x480 mode it is centered correctly (on the centre of the SI moon), but when I change it to 640x288 the text shifts to the left, so only half is readable . I have tried different res's and options in the Mala GUI option screen but can't get it to display correctly. :unsure

Do I need a 640x288 vertical layout (I thought this would be included in the standard layoutfile I have)

All games are playing fine btw.

I cant help you .. ive only used the normal resolutions on my cab.

What do you mean "Normal" resolutions:unsure I am only talking about the Mala GUI (frontend) not individual games. It works fine horizontally but NOT Vertically

The games are all at correct resolutions

Is the arcade vga able to spit that res out vertically ??? it does not have all resolutions in it only the most common ones

The 640x480 mode that works well (centre's the gamelist on the layout background) is interlaced so it flickers. The 640x288 mode which you use for general windows, displays the layout background correctly but the game list is off to the left. I just need to centre the game list on the layout background.

Just find it strange as it centre's under 640x480 but when I select 640x288 it moves.

I 'll take a pic, might explain it better

Jusk saw this post DK, I responded to your other thread a while ago. At 640x480x32 the standard layout alway looked crap on my setup (same as yours), but "Play the Game" vertical looks great (and has a hot looking Anime chick too;)). Not sure why, I just know it looks better.

Thanks, do I need to expand the file its a 7z (I think), and where do I put the file, do I create another folder and call it "anything" and just put it where the standard layout folder is.

Thanks again.

Example-"Play the Game" layout.

1) extract the files with WinRAR

2) Put the folder "play the Game" in the MALA directory as-is (this has the background images etc in it).

3) Put the file Playthegame.mll in the MALA dorectory

4) Open MALA and right click to bring up the options tabs.

5) Go to GUI---LAYOUT tab and select the layout

6) See if the bastard works on screen.

You might need to use the Rightclick "orientation option to rotate the view, but it sounds like you have this sorted already. I just noticed that it has a TTF font too, but I didnt install it. Might do that today and see how it looks.

I can't recall doing anything else to get this layout up.

Dave.

Maybe send me your Mala Ini and I might be able to sort it from that

DK, have you got your windows desktop rotated using ArcadeVGA driver? I tried this but had troubles . Now I just turn my head (bit like Savages?? old avatar :)) Also, I have the 31KHZ jumper removed from the JPAC. One other problem I encountered was that I could not get a stable image between Windows, MALA and MAME. Turns out the USB cable had worked loose. Picture is still sent, but is crap.

Check your email for MAME.INI and MALA.INI

Going to live with the slight flicky image on the GUI, looks a lot better on the Vertical monitor than on the Horizontal, pity there is no 640x288 GUI for Vertical monitors or is there:unsure

I did my setup on my Horizontal cab no need to twist the neck;) What difference does having the 31khz jumper removed do? I have to adjust my horizontal hold every time I return to windows (only on my Vertical cab) :unsure is this what you mean about a stable picture. I have it booting straight to Mala now so no adjustment needed, still bugs me, when I want to configure something though.

Thanks for the help.

I don't use the 31khz modes, so not sure what they do. No jumper worked, so I leave it off. Anyone else know if there is a benefit? I THINK it has to do with running split screen modes from non ArcadeVGA cards for debugging in windows.

I used to use advanceMAME with a TRIDENT 3D Blade card to run Win at 15khz. From what I have read the 31khz jumper will allow split screen (doubled image) so windows can be run safely with a more common video card (Blades are hard to find), then a program like advanceMAME can be used to pump out a 15khz MAME signal to the arcade monitor.

If you perservere with the monitor controls you should find a sweet spot where most games are stable. The adjustment to get the sweet spot was VERY fine. Try games with res NOT 384 x XXX, as the 384's gave me trouble. I sorted out the others, and when they were all stable I returned to the 384s and edited the individual game .ini's to run them at a native ArcadeVGA res that was always stable, but close enough to be . I can now go from Windows to MALA to MAME and back again on all games with no adjustment.

Just went and had a bit of a tweak and found the sweet spot, like you said earlier have to have windows in 640x480 mode and now everything is stable and no adjustment needed :D

Now just have to wire up the sound through the Jpac and cabinet speakers and she's ready to roll. I have an old soundcard with Jumpers for speaker out/Line out so going to try it straight from speaker out with no amp and see how I go.

So far every Vertical game is playing with no frame drop even the later 97 onwards games, 1.5 Mhz seems to be more than enough with Tiny XP

LCD Screen?

Hi Guys,

Im having the same trouble, I have an LCD monitor mounted vertically, if I change the rotation with my graphics program, mame runs, but the screen is elongated and the text is out of line, but when I exit mame I get "OVERSIZE" on the screen, then it goes off.

What do I need to do?

Thanks,

Paul

Make sure the layout you are using supports Vertical Monitors first. The standard one does.

What resolution are you using for the layout display in Mala, (right click mouse on the MaLa Games Menu Screen for options) and set the Layout display option to a different resolution.

I change my rotation in Mala options to Vertical for the Layout

And change the Mame ini file for Vertical orientation

The only way I know of doing this is to enter options in every game (TAB when running a game) you want to flip for cocktail mode. Then select cocktail mode if the game supports this. Tedious I know but if you have the keyboard handy just do it every time you play a game or a few at a time.

Edit: The option for Cocktail mode might be in the Dipswitch part, still use TAB in a game then select Dipswitches

Thanks again DKONG,

Ive done it and it also saves the settings, so you only need to do it once per game.......and yes it is tediuos :120:

Off to play some games!!
