I installed the Corvette Engine Mod last night. Very pleased with it.

[ame=http://youtube.com/watch?v=PZ6Vn352rGg]YouTube - Corvette - Engine Mod[/ame]

First I'll say I bought it from the US guy that made it and its a good kit, easy to install and connect up. Cost about $80 US shipped. Not cheap.

For the technically minded (and interested!) it uses Neon Wire lighting tube. For example you can buy 10ft of this on ebay as per Here for about $10 AUD....

The stuff you get on ebay is exactly the same (I bought some) (many colours avail-check sellers store) but the ebay one is designed to plug into a cigarette lighter socket (12V). The one I bought in the kit comes with a little plastic housing that has a small transformer in it. It takes the feature lamp voltage (via a red clip with the black to ground strap) and converts it to the 12v (I guess). The transformer is obscured by black paint but I imagine one of you electronics geeks could figure this out using calcs/logic given we know the starting and ending voltage, there was also a transistor and resistor wired in there as well(?).

I imagine a motivated modder could reverse engineer this 'type' of mod easily. The lighting is very good for special effects and could be used on many different pinball enhancements. I was thinking of experimenting with running along the bottom of wire ramps for starters (T2?). It can be shaped easily i.e a yellow line could be shaped to a lightning bolt (MM?). Interested in what ppl think?

The transformer module is the bog standard 12v -> ~300v AC inverter that runs the EL-Wire. Those are about $6 on ebay or eyo.com.au had them a while back for $5. They also sold the el wire in many coulours pretty cheap too.

The transistor I would assume actually would be a regulator to feed the inverter with the proper voltage, as the flasher circuit is 20v which would probably blow the inverter.

----

A side note:

EL Wire ONLY glows a greenish blue colour. Every other colour is "made" by tinting the plastic sheath. Therefore the other colours are not as bright as the green-blue (red is especially dim compared to the other colours).

Cheers

Looks good on your machine!

Hey Nuggy I'll see what I have @ home - I won't have an inverter though...

--------------

You can cut this stuff easy enough. If you do, make sure you seal it - just heatshrink won't do - you need to use say some epoxy or silicone, as it gets attacked over time by moisture in the air, and the glow will suffer...

Cheers

Looks great stuba, how about down the length of the drag strip?

No more pics please, I might regret selling it to you.:(

i should point out that the vid is not my machine - its the sales vid but it looks the same.

Dave - i love this pin. I have not powered anything else up since I got it (except that EBD but thats purely diagnostic!). I was thinking the racetrack would look good too in the strip lights as well. I have fixed that ramp diverter about 4 times but my fix was only lasting a few games and it would work loose again so i machined a dremel 'indent/' in the shaft which the lock nut now lives in and it doesn't slip out anymore. It really is a great game, love collecting the cars and the sound is insane. it's got some really tough shots too so it's a players game as well - which is why I don't have the high score. Looking forward to your next batch, if they are anything like this one then you won't have them long!

I reckon this EL wire stuff would look really good with LED lighting as well.
