SF2: Championship Edition... diagnosis/tips request...

Mr_Staypuft

Question

Picked up a few bargain PCBs recently.

This SF2:CE board is in excellent condition, and seems to play fine.

EXCEPT - there's some lines on the screen & occasional corrupted sprites.

Any ideas/suggestions?

the cps1 boards comprise of a common motherboard and then the b - game board.

Some also have the C board (the smaller board on top)

Alot of the time these issues can be fixed by pulling the a and b board apart from each other, and reconnecting them

If that fails you could try re-seating the socket roms

Ahh, thanks, I'll try that.

Hmm... is there a trick/technique to separating the A&B boards without damaging anything?

If that fails you could try re-seating the socket roms

Hmm, do you mean

(1) Just the 3 'capcom white sticker' chips on the B board?

(2) ALL the socketed chips on the B board?

(there are a few that continue _under_ the C board, too)

(3) Or something else?

try reseating the boards first. I am rpetty confident that will sort you. No real trick just pull them apart from each side.

You could also try pushing them together first. When the game is on, when you push the boards together you should see the gfx improve or change a lil

Does the monitor work ok on other games, just to prove whether its the game or the monitor, before pulling the roms out just make sure their all seated correctly first, by pushing each down a bit. The boards will seperate ok it just takes a little force. The only trick is to try and pull straight up, so as not to bend any of the pins, having two people is helpful, one holding the base down while the other pulls up.

thanks guys

@Service it... monitor works fine for STV(Die Hard Arcade).

OK, I tried seperating A&B boards, and putting them together.

No change.

Then I tried removing & replacing the 3 'capcom white label' chips..

No change.

I'll try reseating ALL the black roms now...

PS: I noticed that this white chip is shorter than it's socket.

Is it placed correctly?

Or - should the other end of the chip be moved 2 spaces left?

Nope.

I wish one of those DSE's selling 'em for 91cents was near me.

Hmmm... what's a good BASIC logic probe to get & where, please?

I recently bought this one from Jaycar, its not a bad one.

hi guys

I sent a PM to StayPuft on a few things to try. Thought I'd post it up in case its of any help to anyone else

i had a street fighter II champion edition board issue

see here:

http://www.aussiearcade.com/showthread.php?t=3559

the best way to test is with a complete working board set. Its a hassle I know, but its a more solid way of resolving the issue.

The first step I took was this (I had a hyper fighting working board and my champion edition board was the one which had faulty graphics)

1. I Swapped the 'A' motherboard (bottom board) using the hyper one which was definately working. In my case the issue was still present.

If the problem resolves then you can narrow it to the motherboard

I then done a whole lot of rom swaps as you'll see in my thread (link above), but my suggestion is to follow through with the below just to eliminate

2. I had great help from Mad Mike who tested the top 'c' board and found it at fault due to a pin which was snapped on the little processor chip - you're champion mike!

Anyway to test this, swap the top 'c board' (where the kick wiring plugs into) from a working board, and put on your problem board and see if this resolves your issue.

This was the issue with my board's graphic problems. However in my case, simply swapping the top board didnt let my game boot up, I had to also swap the two little rom chips (PAL chips) which socket onto that top board as it paired with the champion edition game for some reason. Something to do with decryption

If this does not resolve your issue, then you have definately narrowed it down to being your middle B board where all the game roms are.

3. This is the annoying part. What I would do in this instance, is to take out 1 rom at a time from your non working champion edition board and put it into a working Champ edition board. Basically do this until the problem shows up on the working board - this will tell you the EXACT rom chip which is at fault.
