Pointless Posts

Recommended Posts

AA has seen a huge increase in posts, you log on after being away and there are hundreds of new posts.

Is it just me or the majority of these posts completly pointless. For example, inserting a smiley face as a reply, ROFL etc.. its just seems pointless and clutters up the thread. You got to click through 5 pages before you get to something interesting. Some people seem to feel compelled to reply to every single post.

Example, you may get another thread ,say someone selling stuff, then you get someone replying something like " I am not after one of those" Or " if i had the money" etc.. Its just pointless.

You should earn points for quality posts, i.e helping other members, offering interesting stories etc.. not for replying to everything with a fuckin smiley face.

Ok thats off my chest, please feel free to reply with a smiley face to get your posts up.

I agree 100%. Someone even started a thread yesterday, to complain about not being able to access a web site, I tried it a minute later and got straight into.

Lets all stop this pointless shit.

Some are doing more harm then good with this great site.

Lets all stop the crap.

Is this the only forum you have ever been on? Have you never been in a lift with someone you barely know and feel compelled to talk about the weather? What does it matter if there are pointless posts, a few extra scrolls of the mouse won't hurt you. If you want to get technical, a pointless post could be anything that is of no interest to you (e.g. posts about pinball machines when you are only interested in arcade machines). This forum has alot of members, it is impossible to expect people to only post stuff that is relevant to everyone. And since we cannot determine body language or facial expressions through the written word, sometimes a smiley face or ROFL expresses what we cannot see and is an appropriate form of feedback.

Guilty as charged! In my defence, the site had been down for more than a minute before I posted (it was 2 hours or so), and it appears Bumper is revamping their web-site so it was up and down all day.

I'm so tempted to just reply with a :o but then thought hmm.. I might get virtually beat up!

Sure there's a lot of noise around, but you get that with any form of media where people interact.

Some people only speak occasionally and when they do it's normally useful. Others will chatter non stop and have very little that is useful in their conversation. And yet others will be a mix.

To me it's a sign of a healthy forum where there are a fair few people who hang around a lot and like to chatter.

To me if you stifle such activity the forums will start to appear as if there isn't anyone around much.

Of course some people can be painful, take me for example :D Personally I don't find it an issue. But then I may be one of the culprits! :lol

Hmmm. As a relatively new person here, but with a high post count, I don't know what to think about that.

On the one side, I feel guilty about it...

On the other, I feel a bit pissy because the reason I joined here was because it seemed a pretty sociable place.

I'd like to think some of what I have to say adds value here (granted nowhere near all of it).

I personally hate it when you see an interesting thread dissapear into PMs or email. It has no value to anyone else when that happens....

Perhaps the chatterbox helps somewhat?

Isn't one of the running jokes the fact that the other forum has so few posts?

and we get all serious and become the next :tumbleweeds forum!

no way!

I hope that doesn't happen, I love the sociable aspect of this forum as well as the wealth of knowledge and expertise on all things pinball & arcade that is shared.

:tumbleweeds is a JOKE - nothing serious about that at all..!

So, tell me.. Is this thread now becoming irrelevant because its meandering off topic..?

its becoming a joke to the original poster maybe

:unsure

1700 posts in 6 months is pretty much what i am talking about. But if it only annoys me thats my problem, carry on.

You will need these though :unsure:lol:badgrin

lol ok well outa that 1700 I doubt if more than a handful would be single character posts. Lots of us post heaps, but like sum1 else said its mostly chatter and not unneccesary spam.

I know the sorts of posts your talking about though when somebody is trying to get help or what not and is trails off into a load of shit and spam.

Thats all i am saying, if you have got something to add to the conversation or something interesting to say then say it.

agreed, and because this is becoming a large community then yeah we will see lots and lots more somethings to add. There are many threads I do not even post in because I consider the material discussed outside of my knowledge base. Yet from reading it I pick-up a few things.

It should be noted that what is happening is that the forums are reflecting real life.

In real life conversation some idiot will take the conversation away from what the original focus, without adding anything of value at all to the conversation. It often depends on the people in the original conversation to pull em up and bring the conversation back on track. Sometimes everyone is happy to let the conversation meander around the place.

For the technical focused discussions I agree that this is a pain in the ass. However going offtopic is a common symptom of an active forum.

I think management by people within the discussion is the best way to handle it, if the OP doesn't mind, then fine. but if a lurker doesn't like it, well I would suggest live with it or get involved with the conversation and help assist it to go back to the original topic, with smilies :)

a few people thought it worth a reply

:)

what was really pointless was any response to this thread.... I dont think anything will change

:evil

lol, I don't think anything needs to change personally. Group dynamics in a thread is the best means to get it back on track. most people around are mature enough to do this if required. if not then I spose a mod can step in, but I'm yet to see a case where this is really needed.

I had a epiphany, a brain fart, an idea, a hallelujah moment!!!!

If lurkers are getting turned off by all noise in the threads (lurkers = someone who does a tonne of reading but bugger all posting), then why don't we start up a wiki?

An Arcade Wiki and a Pinball Wiki would be a very handy resource. Also it allows the lurkers to lurk and read technical info, while non lurkers and post without worrying about offending the sensibilities of the lurkers who don't like pointless posts!

I for one would gladly perform information mining on threads to contribute to a aawiki.

Just a thought guys... most prob another useless post on my part :lol
