MAME Dump Decapping Project

Aussie MAME team member "Guru" (the main ROM dumper for the MAME project) has started the Decapping project. It's a process of taking hard to dump or encrypted ROM chips, and washing them in nitric acid and acetone to expose parts of the chip. From there, microscopic photos of the chips can be taken and examined by the emulation team to discover the secrets of what lies within.

This is the last step needed to finally break the barrier and 100% emulate some old games that have been lying around in MAME for quite some time. Some very popular titles that are listed include Bubble Bobble, Dig Dug I and II, Galaga, Xevious, Dogyuun and Batsugun.

Some of these games are already "playable", but MAME exists to accurately document how the hardware fits together. "Playable" and "perfect" are very far apart, and this "decapping" process shows the pretty extreme and expensive depths the team goes to to fully reveal the secrets of this hardware.

There's already some successes listed on the page which is great, and plenty of in-progress chips happening already. Great work!

According to his posts on the mameworld forums, he's not doing it himself, but handing it off to a professional mob who do it as a service for high-end engineering mobs.

But even so, there's a lot of prep work for him to do prior, and a lot of collation/organisation work after also. Plus there's an enormous cost involved in paying for the service.

But either way, it may mean Batsugun is finally emulated fully, which makes me a happy chappy!
