Faster phase-out incandescent bulbs

Recommended Posts

This article released on 5th June 2008 by the bald man.

Probably applies to some extent to arcade gamers as well.

When they talk about inefficient incandescent globes, is this a ban on all incandescent globes.....#44 #45 #906 etc?

:unsure

The Rudd Labor Government and Lighting Council Australia have joined forces to fast track the phase out of inefficient light bulbs in Australia, bringing forward an import ban to November this year.

The 12-month acceleration of the four-year phase out, beginning with the introduction of a ban on imported incandescent lamps from this year, will result in earlier cuts to greenhouse emissions of more than four million tonnes per year.

Retailers will then have a further 12 months to sell existing supplies before any sort of retail ban comes into effect

I doubt it very much. They would be talking about specific domestic lighting.

Havent yet seen anything domestic that would be worth replacing my PAR-38s on my security sensor lights... those CFLs wouldn't last long at all turning on and off at the possums :)

It will be domestic only, the cost to phase out smaller incandescent would impact most larger buidling as there switchboards indication lamps are similar bulbs to our pinballs.

The cost to retrofit all the switchboards across Australia would impact buisness.

I'm on a professional (stage) lighting forum and there's been talks with the government about this over the last year or so. It's basically targeting GLS (General Lighting Service) lamps, not stage or other applications.

It's also not a blanket ban of incandescent lamps, just ones that fall below the limit of acceptable efficiency. (can't remember the Lumens per Watt target that's been set) Some manufacturers have already released standard sized lamps with halogen capsules inside that are more efficient and they're getting cheaper all the time.

The crazy thing is that every road upgrade around here has a lamp post (with two lamps) every 50-75 metres! These are in areas with no real likelihood of pedestrian traffic. What, have all the cars now got no headlights and suddenly need hundreds more street lamps on every section of double lane road? It's a gross waste of power and resources.
