Newbie Question If Anyone Wants To Help!!

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am new to everything and don't know much.

Basically I want to build a cocktail cabinet that has a selection of games but I want to be able to play Street Fighter 2 (so six button setup). Was thinking of using MAME32. Downloaded that and seems ok.

Can someone point me to a topic on here that tells me exactly all the stuff I need.

...like a computer of course, but do I need power supplies, special joystick to plug into ...the computer, and how do the normal buttons hook up etc.

Like I said I am a real newbie but have three friends interested in doing the same thing.

....or is a jamma setup easier way to go?

Thanks for any help in advance...I have been looking on the forums for ages!

Ok mate, first question you need to ask yourself is how many people are gonna be playing this cab at once? Cause if its going to be one player, then its gonna be about $60 bucks cheaper. I say this cause you will be able to do a keyboard hack. Now, for the guts, mame is probably a good way to go to begin with simply because it runs off a computer, and because of that, you can use a computer monitor. There are a few cocktail builds around so have a look for them. Your 2d games will run on a computer with a 2ghz processor and no video card but the motherboards built in. So, first task it to decide how many players, second task is to decide what sort of games, third is to find a computer. I say what kinds of games as in vertical games(such as pac man) or horizontal games(such as street fighter). It is possible to rig up the monitor so it rotates so that you can play both, or you can set it so vertical games run on the horizontal monitor, but it halves their size. So, after that you need to find a plan. Probably whats going to be best is to do a box sort of set up simply because of ease of construction.

Ok, to awnser the questions:

No you wont need a power supply except the computers power supply if you go down the pc route, if you go the jamma route then yes you will. The joysticks can just be standard arcade joysticks bought from a place like http://www.gamedude.com.au/arcade or from http://www.ozstick.com.au

To make them work with the computer you will need to buy a keyboard encoder (for 2 players either a keywiz or an i-pac2) or if there is going to only be 1 joystick and 1 set of buttons then a keyboard hack will save you from having to buy the keyboard encoder. I cant comment much on a jamma set up as I have never built one but from what i know, there is alot of costs but depending on how you go about with the pc setup, the mame route can cost just as much.

Thanks, that answers a lot of my questions. I checked out the sites you said and OZStick seems to have a bit of info. I would like to build a two player cocktail table, I have seen a few builds in the forums that look good, so will base it on that soft of thing. I will have to post pics etc when I get to it.

I was thinking on one side, have the one controller with the six buttons and on the other side have two lots of controllers. ...and somehow switch it when you aren't playing games like street fighter etc.

Kinda like the picture attached (if I did it right) http://www.members.iinet.com.au/~novasmic/table/nov-355.jpg

Once I get the plan sorted then I will do it all at once. (I have two weeks holidays coming up soon! Hehe!)

yea. Crap, im not 100% sure how they did that. Someone else might be able to help you but as far as i can figure they probably used 2 ipacs-2s and not an ipac 4. Thats a very difficult looking job XD but if you can do the woodwork then go for it!
