Any decent 3-sided cocktail kits in Aus?

Recommended Posts

I want to build either a MAME 3-sided cocktail, or a 2 sided with a rotating monitor. Think I'll use a 19" LCD with a decent viewing angle; so don't need too much depth.

I already have too many projects, so would rather buy a kit like...

Are there any similar kits in australia? So far this is the closest - seem o/priced for some MDF...

Its not just MDF.

Just because you can buy a sheet of Melamime for $150 odd doesn't mean the kit should be $200.

What about tax? Machine/CNC purchase? The glass? Your ability to cut as good as those kits? Workshop? Staff? Power? Convenience?

Have a think about it.

To be able to start fitting it out in 15 minutes is a good selling point. It takes people months to get to that point. If you don't like it, don't buy it.

You want cheap? DIY.

I've been chatting to some cabinet makers here. 16mm mdf costs $25 for a 1200 x 2400 sheet.

They cut straight from a Autocad DXF. Their machine is cuts through 16mm like butter and they charge $1.30 per minute for the cutting. As a rough guide, they can cut out and detail 6 kitchen doors from a sheet that big in 12 minutes.

Don't pay $600 for a cocktail kit. Its a rip. Talk to a few big time cabinet makers and see what they say.

Those kits are not MDF.

They are pre finished Melamime or similar and it is more than $25.

I wasn't saying those cabs are cheap or the way to go, I was just saying that there are more factors to consider than just the wood.

Fair enough - my comment on the cost was a throw-away. I've since called the australian site I referred to and it sounds as if they import, but don't manufacture; so they can't help me.

The only thing I've found close to a 3 sided cocktail is on eBay, fully built up, and not for me.

Given that this is exactly what I want - http://www.mameroom.com/ProductDetail.asp?ID=UACOCKTAILKIT3

Is my only option to DIY? I could use the Ms PacMan plans as a base, but I would rather just take an AutoCAD file to a cab maker and get it cut - anyone have one? Or I could 'hack' something from IKEA....

They import? Crikey.

I haven't seen any 3 sided kits in OZ.

My ones are cut on a CNC but I am in NZ.

Good luck.

I'm from NZ (Akl), but have defected to Melb :)

If you sell your kits, how much are they for just the wood and controller panels? I could get one of my relatives to ship over.

Otherwise think I'll mod this with some legs...

First link not a bad price, 2nd link over priced IMO.

I know a CNC place down in Melb that would be able to cut those plans for $200 odd bucks including material, the glass is no biggy heck a pinball glass only cost us $40 odd bucks. Glass is cheap.

If I had a choice I would go the 1st link, paying the extra is worth the less hassel.

Problem is that the first link is in the US!!!

I'm going to build into an Ikea Ramvik; with modular controls that bolt/unbolt to the side of the cabinet. I'll just be able to squeeze a 19 inch LCD monitor in.

Nice idea.

Update....

I went with a 17" monitor; in and working. I should be finished by end of week and will post pics then. I'm using bed leg screw plates to allow the control panels to be mounted/unmounted; as well as a USB port for connecting the controls (U360).

Can you move the 2 player CP to the side for Horizontal games?

yep - that's why the usb port is sticking out (u360's) and there are holes for the contoller to screw on. The CPs come of to leave a fairly clean looking side table...

Well done then

I must say - It is very practical, I like practical, I did that once too.

Will you dress it up later?

not with artwork etc; but I will get rid of holes, bare chipboard etc; basically looks like this with controllers off - http://mamebook.blogspot.com/2008_02_01_archive.html - so I want to keep clean.

Would look cleaner if I'd put proper panel mount USB sockets in

I have liked the unusual machines since I first "found" this forum.

They get you thinking

I am thinking again, so thanks for the ideas

. . . . . . .

I am thinking Fold down panels . . . .

But thats just a thought for my next one.
