Psychadelic TV

Womble

Question

Hi All

My inlaws have TV thats a couple of years old which has started to give really weird colours. It will probably end up forming the screen of an arcade cab I am planning to build as they plan on getting a large LCD, but as their renovations are at least 12 months away they would prefer this one to last the year.

The fault appeared one day apparently, and did go away briefly once. Its clearly not missing any one colour, so am wondering if its a degaussing fault. There is no way to trigger a degauss with the menu system either.

If the colour is turned right down the image is fine in black and white, which surely uses all 3 guns equally. For some reason its forgetting where the colours should be in an image.

Am wondering why the fault appears and has disappeared tho, dont TVs all have degausers built in that DG on 1st power on?

Also where would the magnetism come from? The TV sits in a wooden wall unit with only china in the surrounding cabinets, no speakers even in the same room.

Am 99% sure my father-in-law hasnt been trying to bugger it with a magnet to convince his wife that now is the time to buy a fat LCD :lol

Also the white area of any image are perfect across the screen, lettering on video games for eg. If it was a gauss problem surely the whites would be as messed up as the rest? I think?

Looks like a deguassing problem to me. Worth a try. Maybe the TV deguasser is faulty. I assume TV has its own speakers, also it can get affected by earth's magnetic field. The white works OK because that is residual magnetism, doesn't affect the guns. White consists of all colours, so it doesn't matter if one is "lit" up already.

hmmm.. Looks like the degausser is not functioning, or the yoke assembly or purity rings may be loose...

I have a konka, the manual has the circuit diagram which is pretty cool.

I believe they are a panasonic rebadge...

Nothing there looks too bad though really...

It has a very very slight rattle to it, which isnt the legs moving either, that sounds like bad news to me.

The question is where the flamineck can I get a spare one, may have to take the hound out for a long walk tomorrow, TVs by the roadside or dumped along the railway are not that uncommon.

Anyone know any TV spares companies in Oz? The annoying thing is that google comes up with zero hits when I search for the full part number MZ73L 9RM. I get hits with MZ73 on its own tho. The 9RM seems to define the resistance value, but I get nothing with searching for the right one.

Speedy spares put me on to the official service company for this brand of telly. Pebble Electronics, they seem to know what part I was after as soon as I told them the model number, common fault perhaps. I have one on the way to me now, hopefully will be able to get the telly off the dining room table before the weekend. Wife is losing her good humour on the topic, despite the fact its her parents TV ffs!

:)

The new posistor arrived, was duely soldered in place and bingo - problem solved.

Gave the focus a bit of a tweak and called it a day. :)

Well Done Womble :)

Anything saved from landfill is a plus.
