My Cocktail Plans - What to do.

Recommended Posts

Hello Aussie-Arcade!

I know I am new here but have been reading the board for a week or so reading as much as a I can about everything before I ask so hopefully I am doing the right thing here.

I recently decided I wanted to have a Cocktail Arcade system so I went out and found one and snapped it up. Apparently its a LAI one (the logos suggest this :) ) and it has a Taito Mr Do. But I don't think that’s the original game as the door where the PCB has more holes in it then it needs. (the control panel says it had "Ghostmuncher Uniwars" in it)

Here it is...

http://www.vooks.net/images/arcade2.jpg

Any who I am planning on tidying it up, and I was going to MAME it but after coming across this sort of thing which basically contains all the buttons I was going to buy to restore it and new joysticks, and the 48-in-1 thing (which is more than enough for what I need).

I don't really want to rip out a completely working machine especially when it all works well it's just really old and a bit daggy.

So basically boils down to... is that thing on Ebay worth it and is good and that should be all I need? Like that board just sits in there with the power, I dont need a PC too? I’m not really skilled in any of this but it’s not that hard and I’m willing to give things a go.

I await all advice with anticipation! I also have some more questions about the metal panels where the joystick is but one at a time. If not anyone in Perth do these? (just in case).

nice machine the original game was a LIA galaxian/ghostmuncher board if it helps.

you could just rewire to jamma and get the 48 board seperatly (and cheaper)

as for panels instead of hacking the originals i have a identical player 2 panel plus another panel setup for twin buttons if you need some in the future or cant find any locally

saves wrecking yours as you would need 2 buttons for a 48 in 1 setup and that way can switch back to original later on

btw once jamma wired the 48 is plug and play

Yeah I was either going to drill another hole (like I know how lol) or just get some new metal redone (another thing I don't know how to do) but if you got them that fit for both players I might have to take them off your hands (let me know how much).

I paid $350 for the entire thing, good value or not really?

Just depends on that thing on Ebay, if thats good I'll nab that because that looks easy enough for me.

Gday fellow West Aussie, looks like you got youself a nice little cocktail, regarding that arcade pack you refered to those joysticks will be to long for your CPs and theres not that much room to drop them lower inside the CP,also if the games working no need for a power supply as you already have a worker,I would suggest buy youself some buttons ,a 48 in 1 board and make yourself a harness to go from the LAI plug to jamma and away you go

Ps:if your interested in the ones narf has I can drill some holes for you and hook you up with some buttons

bloody good value working :o

i have a pair of player 2 CPs so you will need holes on 1 for player buttons and on the other a hole for the second button

one set needs a good scrub and tidy but ill dig them out and have a look its a shame to wreck original panels like yours. These are old so its no fuss

could use original cocktail 4 ways ive got some somewhere

$350 is good for a piece of arcade history and that cocktail looks like it's in good nick.

"Daggy"?! Much more character than the new style cocktails getting around. I'd be well pleased with myself if I'd picked it up for that much:)

If I could grab those off you it would be cool, do they have the little Square Player buttons, or the normal Round types. I don't mind tidying them up a bit, just need to know how to put a design on them after all.

Would It be better to get 8 or 4 way stick if I am getting one of these 48 in 1's

How would I go about getting them off you? :)

Could you, or anyone for that matter recommend the best place to get some, i'll need at least two sticks (mine work but they are a bit rough), the jamma board and this harness? Not sure what that is :/

I will take you up on your drilling and button offer, once I sort out with narf.

Thanks again all for your help :)

hey vook

there isnt any Player buttons so you could add any size you wanted to them. ill take some pics tonite and send them across for you. They still have joysticks in them but there old also. had a look the fire buttons are about inch out if you look across the top of them but that wont be noticable from either side (its because there 2 different CP setups)

and found a few cocktail player buttons too (little round ones)

i can post them up for you no worries. perth post is super cheap as my mail is sent to perth anyways for processing before posting :x

and 48 in 1's use 4 way joysticks it is alot harder to use a 8 way stick on them.

Jamma harnesses are available on eBay here. I bought some recently from this perth seller.

You will need stickers for these as they are UNMARKED, Go to this thread to get them, and print them on sticker paper.

I bought buttons from him too, but they are bad qual, ie 3 broke as I was screwing them up, maybe get them from OZSTICK.com.au as they are good qual - they have square buttons too. Maybe get a nut wrench from Ozstick to do up the switches, it's a tube socket made from plastic. and is quite cheap usually (I think they sell them)

Some games on the 48/1 use 8 way (1942, 1943)- but most use 4 way, so you'll need one with both types interchangable I guess.

I am not sure, can someone help me here, will a Zippy Joystick work on this cocktail (will it be short enough)?

Anyway, good luck

Check this thread. These are Zippy joysticks, just enought room. Kids use it mostly though. If you can source the short shaft Zippy's they are much better, see here for an example of them installed

If you can't find the short shafted Zippy sticks, then just make a spacer plate of 6mm or 9mm MDF to sandwich between the underside of the control pael and the mounting plate of the stick. Instant short shaft!

VOOK, drop me a line as I can get 48in1 boards and supply you with sticks and buttons.

Cheers,

Chris

Thanks for your help. Do I really need one of these harnesses - looking at my board it seems one of these is on it, the only other wires connected to the board are the sound and I assume the power. (some of them are wrapped up for some reason though.

No you dont need 1 . . . . . but . . .

But if you want to run a 48 in 1 board, it needs to be JAMMA (jamma is a standard config) and is 2 rows back to back, 28 pins either side) 56 pins in total (The 48 in 1 has to have the JAMMA standard harness for it to work, not negotiable)

Yours looks like about 44 to 48 in total.

So you can make an adapter harness from your socket to a JAMMA harness (like an adapter, custom made) or you can buy a JAMMA harness.

There is a lot to learn, keep asking, happy to keep helping

Here is a universal adapter

I have bought from them b4 and they are fair on shipping, and are good people

are we sure it's the same?

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

WAIT A SEC

THIS IS THE OPPOSITE OF WHAT IS NEEDED

You need a Jamma adapter from a Universal Cab

NOT a Universal Game adapter

Whatever is easier, doesn't matter about cost haha.

GIBO said he would help out with an adapter so we'll see how that goes first, then if that fails plan B.

Always plan B.

Alrighty new question, best way to make CP artwork, Im pretty good with Photoshop so making the art is not a problem. Just whats the best way to stick it on?

Cheers again everyone!

edit: Oh you guys got in before I posted, So not one of those adapters? Oh so confusing :/

I just got this made up at http://www.mamemarquees.com

It cost about $66.00 made and delivered to OZ.

I have found there is no-one in Oz that does this.

The quality is outstanding.

I uploaded a design via a link I sent them, after designing this. It was 107 Meg

They suggest 250 DPI Resolution and for you to make it to scale (1 to 1)

They print on black vinyl, and can even print white onto it.

Get the size right, maybe add 10mm all round to allow for errors.

It is tough, but keep it covered until the project is finished, I put a dent in mine (D'oh)

It looks like it does... this is looking good if I am correct what I am seeing... all we would need is a new harness? (I am probably wrong)
