Webpage hosting

For hosting (especially Australian) I would highly recommend http://www.jumba.com.au.

Very good service and handy that you can actually call up and speak to an Aussie. There are cheaper (probably only by a few dollars per month for what you are looking for anyway) out there but if you don't want to be dicked around and have access to every feature you can think of these are the guys to go with from small website to large. Some months they have special sign up promotions so keep an eye out. :023:

Ok, thanks for that.. but i really dont know alot about website stuff. So if i make a webpage in Dream weaver for example. I Pay the host money then send them my webpage file?

Sorry I know a bit about website construction but no nothing about how the whole domain/hosting thing works:redface

Mmm no its not really. Its a few steps beyond that but in my mind, uploading and managing it is simpler than creating the website itself!

With Jumba and the vast majority of other places you are buying some webspace which you then wholly manage uploading to via FTP. Once you have uploaded your files in the correct directory you then set up your domain name to point to the webspace (called DNS settings). Once you have it sussed you really don't need to be paying anyone (also slowing down the process) to do this part for you imo. :D

With Jumba's webspace there are all sorts of other fairly easy to use tools to do all sorts of other things such as manage stats, emails and even set up CMS.

Does anyone have any recommendations for *free* webhosting ?

I want to put my FH pinball restoration up somewhere... I could use my Internode quota, but I may not be with them forever.

What about blogger? (Owned by google)

Gave it a go myself, ended up just running the threads here in the end...

I have a very different experience with them. I had a software release on 8th July and noticed very soon after that half my bandwidth limit was exceeded in a few days. So I wrote Jumba an e-mail on Thurdsay the 9th.

I have purchased the AU-SMLBIZ-1 web hosting account for two years and have only just opened my site up a week ago. I am already over half my monthly bandwidth transfer quota.

Since I host alot of free software on my website people will be downloading all the time. I'm wondering what happens when I go over my monthly quota? Do you close down the website when that limit has reached? What are my options in dealing with this problem? I cannot really afford to upgrade my account. Does that mean I will need to find another host?

While waiting for a reply on Friday my website finally when down with a "Bandwidth Limit Exceeded" message answering the question for me. So I found another host and started moving the website. The website was moved later on Friday morning. My new host "Host Papa" answered all my questions promptly and the move was painless.

On Sun 12th I finally recieve a reply from Jumba

Unfortunately, once the bandwidth limit is exceeded, the site is suspended for the remainder of the month. The best solution is to purchase a plan that will suit your needs. It might be best to contact sales to work something out. Please feel free to contact us again.

So I sent feedback with a rating of 1 out of 5 stars stating I was disspointed with their support and how long it took to get back to me. And this is there reply.

Thanks for your feedback.

At first glance, ticket #794814 is just an enquiry, and as such it wouldn't have received the same priority as a problem on a server, for example.

You would have been aware that your site was going to use 10GB+ in such a short time? From its links throughout Google I can see it's not a new site, so presumably you have had it hosted elsewhere previously and would be aware of how much bandwidth it consumes. You mentioned in ticket #794814 that you can't afford to upgrade your plan, so I'd suggest you're going to keep having this problem unless you sort out a way to pay for the bandwidth your site uses. You could investigate ways of finding a site sponsor, increase your donations or perhaps Google adwords might be a solution.

In any case, as per the response in ticket #794814, once the bandwidth limit is exceeded, the site is suspended for the remainder of the month and this is what happened. I believe you would have been expecting that, but the ony option through us would have been for you to upgrade your plan before the limit was reached, as the rest is all automated (as is standard with most cPanel hosts).

All the best with your new provider.

Regards,

Gary

So I replied with

Hi Gary

It seems your definition of 24/7 support is different to mine. Taking 3 days to respond to an e-mail is simply not acceptable. If you did any proper research you would know that my website opened on 1 Jul 2009. Just because it's been indexed by Google doesn't mean it's been up for months. Check my website it announces the day it opens in the news section.

Jumba's pricing is more than any other host I have seen. I onced asked a Jumba rep why this was so and the reply was because of the "great support". Since this is a claim to be your strength then why did it take you so long to reply? Just because it's not a server going down you still had all of Friday and Saturday to reply to me. If your 24/7 support only includes system critial failures then why not stipulate that in your packages instead of boasting about how great your support is.

I am very happy with my new host. They cost me less, give me great support (while waiting for you they replied to me on numerous occations). I have unlimited space and bandwidth, cpanel access and they have been nothing but friendly from day one.

I guess I expected a simple "I'm sorry for not getting back sooner", as I had to change hosts when the dreaded "Bandwidth Limit Exceeded" message popped up during an important software release. And no I didn't know that was your policy when bandwidth was exceeded which is why I asked the question in first place.

I work in the IT industry and I get asked questions by people all the time like "how do I setup a website?" or "where shall I host my website?". I know that I will not be recommending Jumba to anyone based on this reply and the terrible service I have recieved. And all in all you have been nothing but a waste of my time and money. I would have liked to support an Australian company but the bad support and bad attitude leave me with no regret moving to an overseas competitor. Incidently a copy of your e-mail along with my reply will be posted on a popular Australian internet site for all to read. Have a nice day.

I suggest you stear clear of Jumba. My new host is "Host Papa" and I am very happy with the service, features and price. You can't go wrong with top support, unlimited space and bandwidth and all that with full cpanel access.

I can host 2 minor sites say 100MB each with their own domains if you want, one catch I ask that you put one of my Google ads on your page somewhere.

Bandwidth is limited though and I cant have it as a permenant thing, I may need to close down the account in 12 months but if you need some temp space I am happy to offer it

That sounds pretty shithouse headkaze. Well, I have never had any wrong doing by them although I havent really been that active with the sites they host for me in a long time (all I seem to do at the moment is just auto pay their bills). Its been a while so I might have a look around. Also I wish my sites were so popular the bandwidth would be exceeded!

I have had some shocking hosts in my time.

I ama php coder by trade so have been through many hosts for myself and clients.

I was with Micfo for years until recently they decided VIP users (A privelage we paid for) were not as important, and we got shunter to inferior and sub standard servers, subsequently the site just couldnt handle the trafic and down we went, so I moved off there and am on a host monster account at the moment which I am happy enough with for my main site, silvertails.net

though I may start looking for an Aussie host soon

i use planetdomain and very shortly they can stick their service right up the ass for crap i put up with (including last year when they lost their servers for 8 days and afterwards they shifted many servers and didnt tell many users .. me included .. and lost all web sales/emails/etc until some bright dick realised it.

i have a long memory for shit service and they didnt compensate anyone despite their 99.99% uptime guarantee (as it was outside their control .. wtf?)

planet domain ... :fight.thumb:

(but will be looking for a host soon, especially one that can offer me a shop/cpanel/etc)
