Okay, so a couple of years ago i started a poll which was looking at the correlation between nostalgia and age when it comes to video game consoles. As I am just about to submit my PhD, i thought that it was about time that I revisited this data. So here is the question...

Take a look at this image...

Then vote for the period of console gaming that you are most nostalgic about. Once you have done this, please leave a post with your year of birth, and what generation of console you voted for.

As reward for participation, I will give a prize (something arcade related, most likely a neo cart). Remember, that for your post to count, it must say what you voted for (based on the image) and the year of your birth.

First Generation (Magnavox Odysessy / Pong Clones / Coleco Telstar)

Second Generation (Atari 2600 / 5200, Channel F, Coleco Vision, Magnavox Odysessy 2, Intellivision)

Third Generation (Atari 7800, NES, Master System)

Fourth Generation (Super NES, Megadrive, TG16, Turbo Duo, Neo Geo)

Fifith Generation (Jaguar, n64, Saturn Playstation)

Sixth Generation (Gamecube, Dreamcast, PS2, XboX)

Seventh Generation (PS3, Wii, 360)

Remember, this is nostalgia, so older systems which you still hold in high regard or play often, despite the fact that they are old and crusty ;)

DOB 1979. Most nostalgic about fourth gen.

My first machine was a second gen (Sega SC-3000H), and first dedicated console was a third gen (Master System). But given that I actually had to pay for my own stuff (tight parents, no pocket money) I didn't start really enjoying consoles until I could afford more than 1 game a year thanks to the brilliance of the part time job. That didn't happen until my teens, and the fourth gen consoles (had both MD and SNES).

[edit] I ran a similar poll on Overclockers a couple of years ago:

http://forums.overclockers.com.au/poll.php?do=showresults&pollid=5351

No formal age stats however, but it certainly shows a different age bracket (OCAU posters are generally born 1985-1995, about a generation younger than the average here.) You might want to cross-post this thread over there if you need a younger sample group.

DOB 1980 2nd generation. Go Atari and Commodore 64, I miss you!! :cry You also forgot the Amiga.

I have almost owned most of the gaming systems available from the second generation onward, and still collecting.

Yes I am a games addict.:badgrin

I voted 3rd Generation... my DOB is Sep 1977.

This is a tough one for me... I remember fond memories of the 'pong' home 'console', my cousins Atari 2600 etc but I never owned one... my first/most nostalgic gaming system was the Commodore 64 but thats out of scope.

Thus I voted for Sega Master System as that was the time when Sonic was creating a new age, and I remember the SNES but I was definately a sega fan. A few years later I got a megadrive for the later Sonic titles but it wasnt the same.

I also hold very fond memories of the Playstation 1 because thats when my kids first started playing games (Spyro), and overall it was the last console that was aimed at fun more than boasting wars on graphics etc (until the Wii perhaps).

DOB 1970 (concieved in 1969)

I went second generation Atari 2600, but the Pong home consoles where the ones that held me captivated, we had the paddle type where you could play , Tennis , Squash, hockey and another two I dont remember. No one watched TV we all played pong(from my memories anyway) ( we didn't get a color tv till late 70's)

I voted for the next best, 3rd Gen.. Sega Master System ftw!

I think my first was commodore 64, followed by Atari 2600 which stopped working which was replaced by a system that was an Atari 2600 but didnt have Atari logo or anything plus it had built in games, about 120 or more. Good Times Late nights.

Master System did it for me before the graphics generation of the later consoles, i think this was the console (could have been c64) that my cousin challenged us to stay up all night and play without going to sleep.

I fell asleep for half and hour at 6am and powered on the rest of the day, we took him home at about 10am and he went to to sleep for over 20 hours straight:lol

dob '75

I abstained from voting, never in the console scene, entered the computing era in '80, never had the need for a console.

I've owned a PS1, hasn't been used in years, was thinking of dropping it in the bin because I've no intention of using it again (I think the laser's a bit stuffed anyway)

And now a wii. But I can't say I'm nostalgic about the wii, it's a console, I think it's a cool concept. But in years to come, I doubt I'll be looking back on it fondly.

Same here.

I'd LOVE to help with your thesis - but I never owned a console!

(unless you include the Dick Smith Wizzard !! )

I went...

Dick Smith Wizzard --> VZ300 --> C64 --> PC

My DOB = 1972, but my nostaliga "peak" would be 8bit computers (c64)
