I've narrowed down my pinball wish-list and would like to know what people think would be the best machine to buy? All of these machines are within my budget (3-4k) so machines like TAF & TZ are out of the question. I would also value the ratings (see below) on your choice:

Artwork: ?/10

Audio: ?/10

Playfield: ?/10

Ruleset: ?/10

Reliability: ?/10

Longevity: ?/10

Cheers,

Matthew

WH2O. Of the games you mention it is head and shoulders above. IMO it is a more fun (and assessable) game than TZ, although doesn't quite meet TAF fun-wise, but it's really not a long way off for me. At the price, it is so much the best bang-for-buck around.

Artwork: 7/10 - This isn't the greatest artwork on the planet, just decent. Certainly as good as any other on the list, probably better than most (Maybe FT is a bit nicer imo)

Audio: 8/10 - I really like some of the audio, especially the "Whitewater" yell

Playfield: 9/10 - This is where it shines, great shots although a lot of airballs

Ruleset: 9/10 - compliments the playfield, some great multipliers and who wouldn't want to be Rivermaster!

Reliability: 9/10 - Typlical Williams. Hard to clean under the upper playfield though

Longevity: 9/10 - I play this at nuggy's place almost exclusively. I would buy one except for its accessibility there. I think we plan a WH2O for FH swap soon, great way to enjoy games - swap with friends! The only reason I haven't loaded up the FH yet and headed down there is because I suspect it will be the end of our friendship as I probably won't give the WH2O back any time soon! :)

In the "none of the above category" I am a big fan of Stargate.

Wayne had had a Wh2O on ebay recently, didn't see it sell so worth an email. I'm sure MarkC or one of the other regular traders here could find you one too.

Demolition Man, I have played this once, did not enjoy, I don't like the art work either

Fishtales, simple but fun, visitors will love the game

Flintstones, have played once, looks like a fun machine, I could not get into it

Have you played these machines on Visual Pinball?

http://www.vpforums.com/index.php?s=

I find VP to be a good way to 'audition' games that I am thinking of buying

whist VP is not the same as playing the real thing, it does give a good indication of gameplay, how the game sounds etc...

I think you also should be cautious of buy a game purely on other peoples recommendations

There are quite a number of games in the 'top 20' that i would not personally buy as I just could not get into the game

then there are some games that others would not even look at that I quite like

Go to Mark C's, bumper actions open nights (Fridays?) and play every machine you can, THEN buy the machine you like

I would choose Fishtales - Fun game that is great for the whole family.

As mentioned, you really need to play them all and then narrow down to one title. Then you have to find the best conditioned machine for your budget. So in my opinion - you have two trips to the dealers (or eBay etc..)

You removed T2 ?

I have played all of the machines and also downloaded the ROMs for VPinMame. Out of all the machines I have played, this was the short-list I came up with for pinball machines within my budget. I played T2 but it didn't appeal to me that much so it didn't make the list. I will make my own decision in the end about which machine I buy, but I thought I would get people's opinions on the machines I am considering. Perhaps a machine has known problems, or the ruleset is not challenging - any info like this will assist me in making a decision. I won't be blaming anybody for my decision, but I value the opinions of the members on this site so I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask for advice.

I have both Fish Tales and Flintstones and I would take Flintstones over Fish Tales any day ( I guess the Flintstones theme just appeals to me more than fishing:unsure).

Flintstones is great for kids and has lots of cartoonish sounds which I am sure they would love. (yeah yeah I am just a big kid:redface)

That said, if you are getting a machine just for yourself I agree with most of the other opinions that out of the choices given, Whitewater provides the best all round gameplay.

"None of the above" category I would choose World Cup Soccer.

Wait untill after christmas, and you will most likely pick up an addams or TZ for the 3-4k mark.

Funny thing christmas:badgrineveryone always needs some cash straight after, and someone will most likely have one for sale.

Most defineately worth waiting for instead of your abovementioned list:)

Forgot to mention,

What about STTNG?

Takes a little while to get in to it but would be in your price bracket and nearly as good as a TZ

WH20, Fishtales or Doctor Who from that list, very good games.

What kind of games do you like? And do you already own any ?

or the ruleset is not challenging - any info like this will assist me in making a decision.

Shadow is very challenging and would be in the price range of the ones you've mentioned.

from your list , best pick- a WH20-played it a few times and loved the ramps, Have had a Fishtales now for 10 years and still love playng it , Had a Flintstones for 8 mths and while good fun don,t miss it all. I really do miss my Creature-a reasonable one went for 3k on ebay last week. That is definetly in front of any of your list and has a fairly stable resale.
