Dick Smith ESR Meter Kit

Recommended Posts

As I slowly collect useful equipment for repairs, I have had a bit of a search for ESR Meters. The Dick Smith website tells me these stores may have kits in stock (probably not for long though!)

NSW/ACT:- Bowral DSE, Nowra DSE, Winston Hills DSE

QLD:- Beenleigh DSE, DSE Bundaberg (FRN), Earlville DSE

WA:- DSE Bunbury (FRN).

ESR Meter MK2

If not any of those, then the first type

ESR Meter (first version)

Is anybody local to these stores who may be able to swing by and see if they have any of these in stock? I will obviously pay for it, and postage, plus reasonable associated costs if required.

Any help very appreciated if anyone is close!!

Hey Narf, is it possible that you could pick up an extra ESR kit for me if you can find any?

I also found this "Digital Capacitance Meter"on the Jaycar website - does this look like it would do the same job? It seems to. Apparent differences are that it uses a setting dial for capacitance values, but doesn't include a reference chart on the front.

No capacitance meters and ESR Meters are not the same. You can't test capacitor values in circuit with a Capacitance meter. As far as I understand an ESR Meter measures a capacitors ESR in circuit. ESR is the dynamic pure resistance of a capacitor to an AC signal. Measuring ESR can provide a more accurate test of a capacitors health rather than just testing its capacitance. ESR includes the DC resistance of the leads, DC resistance of the connections to the dielectric, capacitor plate resistance and the in phase AC resistance of of the dielectric matarieal at a particular frequency and temperature. So ESR is affcected by the capacitors physical quality.

OK, I'll do some scouring around my local (ACT) DS stores - they aren't one the list, but worth a look anyway just in case. If I find any, I buy a few to share around.

Lucky day! I have managed to acquire a small number of DSE ESR Meter kits (MkII).

Roxbury, Narf, Bodgyben, Terry007: As posters on this thread, if you want/need a DSE ESR meter, contact me ASAP and you can have a kit for $25 +my "handling" ($2) + postage (whatever Aust. Post says). I haven't forgotten you Gamedude, but you already have one.

Email me ASAP for full details, and please send me your address/pcode.

OK, these is some good news and some bad news.

The good news is that the ESR kits are definitely on their way to me.

The bad news is that I probably won't see them until after new year.

Sooooooo, I'll send kits to Roxbury, steptoe, and a few others that contacted me directly. But please don't send me any money yet - I'll send emails out when I finally get the kits.

The other good news, for Roxbury, is that I happen to have ONE (1) ESR mk2 kit here already. As Roxbury started the whole thread, and contacted me first etc, I'll pop that in the post tomorrow.

(I already have my own ESR meter, a Bob Parker/DSE mk1 ! )

Please don't send me any more PMs asking for these kits - when they actually come in I'll tell the people that have contacted me already, and make arrangements.

Cheers,
