my thoughts on a playfield swap

I have never done one, may never will

But

reading a bit about them i thought how cool would it to have a foam cut out that fits perfectly over the back of the board to support all the bits and pieces under there. Once everything has be disconneted, put the foam over it, turn the board upside down and remove. You will then have all components neatly tucked away, in position. Put the new board on, flip over again, remove the foam, everything should be where it needs to be. Problems is where would you get a foam cutout that fits your machine,

My idea :- Make a frame that fits the playfield and is higher the highest component, position some plastic over everything, (dont tuck plastic into crevisies), get some packaging foam, mix in bin with glue, apply foam to playfield, when it drys you should have a mould that will hold everything.

If a component did get caught up in the mould, you could just cut around it, then remove.

What else would i think about at work :D

A playfield swap isn't for the faint hearted - I have done 3 and have enjoyed each one.

Take photos also - and take your time. Swapping over a playfield isn't something you will achieve in a day. While you are doing it rebuild the flippers, bumpers, kickers etc. Spend the extra and replace parts that are worn and install new coil sleeves and clean parts as you go.

Have swapped over a Gottlieb Lite a Card 1960 ,Williams Hot Line 1966 and Gottlieb Surfer 1976, so I would imagine if you were swapping over a late model pin it would be a larger job.

Good luck!

A fun job swapping a field, really satisfying. I use a large piece of still cardboard and after removing all the screws etc on the rear of the field, slide it between the field and the mechs etc, then slide the old field out from under. Keeps everything generally where it needs to be for the new field, especially the wiring looms.
