Arcade Power Supplies

Womble

Question

Hi All, I am at the stage in my restoration when its time to apply some volts, but I am in two minds regarding the power supply. I see a few arcade specific PSUs on ebay for about $40 which look quite neat, but I was (am) planning on using an old Zalman ATX PSU to provide the required voltages.

Anyone on here had any experience with these arcade specific PSUs? At $40 its likely that my old $200 Zalman 400W PSU is actually a far better supply anyway, just slightly bulkier.

Whaddya fink?

Cheers

Thats true, but Zalmans are rock solid, the 5V rail is spot on 5V and stays that way.

I think I will go with the Zalman for the purposes of my test rig, its overkill but should serve me well.

Its only gathering dust at the moment but dont want to sell it.

Although this will be okay for the majority of baords, there are some older boards and some newer boards (particularly the JVS style) that wont be happy with exactly 5v. Im not trying to discourage you from using your zalman, its just more of a FYI :D

Well I have powered it up and it doesnt quite work as well as I had hoped. The screen comes up white, and flashing. Almost as if the board is constantly resetting. I get a click from the speaker at every flash.

The 5V rail is actually at 4.88V when under the load of the board.

The 12V rail is at 12.3 V

If I try another PSU the board does nothing at all, but the 5V rail with that old suppy is a mere 4.52V under load.

My question is - are these boards really that fussy that .12v would make the difference between running and not? Clearly the 4.52V is too low.

Could the board be constantly resetting because the 5V rail is just too low? I assume the arcade PSUs have that 5V adjust for a good reason.
