MDF sealer? Or make your own?

Recommended Posts

I know MDF sucks up paint like a thirsty camel but it didn't occur to me that you needed to do something special with MDF.

I'm hearing lately though that you need something special to properly seal MDF lest the paint peel/chip off at a later date.

I used a interior sealer/primer/undercoat to prime my upright cab, and although it took two coats to really seem 'sealed', it stuck well... I guess time will tell if it peels.

I've seen a proper "MDF sealer" at bunnings but its mighty expensive (more expensive than the bloody black gloss enamel). Does anybody know of any cheap sources of this, or know anybody in the trade in Sydney/Illawarra region that might have some leftovers (enough to undercoat some bartop cabs)?

Alternatively, I hear that you can mix PVA glue with normal undercoat to make it bond better... but I haven't heard a clear answer of how much PVA to Undercoat (ratio). Does anybody have any specific methods of how this should be done or is it all guess work for you guys?

It depends what your going to do with the MDF. For cabinet building I'd just paint like 2 - 3 coats of enamel on it and that should be fine for protection. Maybe with a primer undercoat.. If you want to make the timber ultra firm, maybe you should choose a denser material to work with.. Save yourself the money on adding glue to paint or whatever it is your doing..

Damn, I bought that MDF primer stuff for my cab. You're talking about White Knight brand right?

Ah well :rolleyes

i bought that same stuff.

i haven't tried painting a cab without it, so can't really say it's worth the cost or not.
