A long, long time ago in a council far, far away

Recommended Posts

Well after 3 long months I finally have approval for my house extension, Ipswich city council has today rubber stamped the work. So this week end we start to add another bedroom, a home theatre room and two car accommodation underneath. Plus I gain an extra 40 square metres for toys. So that leads me to two topics for the forums.

1. Suggestions for theatre room layout and do I go a good comfy lounge or two rows of theatre seats.

2. I have all this spare space in which I did contemplate a bowling alley but have since gone cold on the idea. I am thinking Slot car track, Turbo driving cab, Tokyo wars and my twin driving cab. Paint the concrete in black to look like a road.

Any suggestions are welcome

Slot cars aren't that fun for very long, my brother used to have a semi permanent setup for slot cars...never lasted very long. I reckon you would have more fun with some sort of shooting gallery or basketball ticket style machines. As for cinema seats i wouldnt go rows, either go a few comfy recliners like village gold class style or an uber couch. Unless of course you wanted to accomodate more people frequently. my2c

Any decent home theater must have two or three bean bags. (Bean bags = front row. Comfy lounge = back row.)

I would consider using the extra space for a private casino with a jazz lounge and cocktail bar.

Where do you get fancy colourful cinema/timezone carpet from..?

Just use any carpet and pour soft drink all over it, maybe add gum and a little urine. It'll be just like a cinema!!!

As for the home theater, at the risk of sounding like Krammer on Seinfield, go with levels. Build in levels, no furniture. Just carpeted levels. It'll rule. Like an amphitheater, with big steps going down towards the screen. You sit on the steps...lean back on the steps...lay down on the steps...have endless drink, nacho space...magic.

Roulette Table..

Cousin had one for a very long time and it was amazing how much fun they are when you can bet big and lose nothing. Although there was a few boys nights where money changed hands.. Could fund future purchases...:unsure

I was in a carpet choice store today they can get it but it works out around $200 per square metre:cry

FUCK ME...! $200 per SQM, it would want to be magic and fly for that price..

I have a couple of customers who own bowling alleys, I reckon I'll be calling them sometime soon..

Home theater all the way!

Plenty of places stock comfy home theater seats now, and they're easy on the wallet. I'd go a set of 3 or so single recliners in the front row, and then a comfy couch in the back row on a raised platform (stepped like MadMikeAU siggested).

Sound/light proof the whole room (cheap dark carpet on the walls and a sensible ceiling with audio wells will do the trick for low cost). No need to go retarded on projector and speakers. I know plenty of folks who will start telling you to buy $10K+ worth of gear when something 1/5 the price will give you 90% the quality. And if you're not going to be in there 24/7, then why waste the cash when you're probably going to upgrade most of it in 3-4 years anyway?

Seriously - you can build a great home theater these days for bugger all cash. I've seen people waste big bucks on getting all the name-brand stuff, only to have it all out of date in 12 months and be pissy at the money they wasted.

(Just getting in before the audio/video-philes do with their wallet-busting recommendations).

Speaking carpet - I've been on the lookout for theater/gamesroom carpet for over a year now. The cheapest I can find is $150 per square meter and that's at mates rates. Remember that most carpet places sell you stuff per LINEAR meter, which is about 3 meters wide. Anything custom will cost you a fortune.

With that said, I've got a mate who wants some sort of carpet for a gamesroom, and I wouldn't mind getting in if it's cheap enough. Folks over in the US make this stuff for cheap, but shipping small runs here is expensive. Virgil - if you're up for a group buy from the states, let me know. Maybe it would be best for all of us if we went that option?

Let me find the site I was thinking of and post back here...

[edit] Plenty of folks have this stuff, but I've found cheaper in the past:

[edit2] Bingo:

US$2.68 a square foot = AU$3.47/sq-f = ~AU$32 per square meter!!!!

Who's up for a group buy? :D

http://www.solomons.com.au/specialoffers.htm $39-$55 per square metre. That catelogue is finished, but its an indication of what they can do.

Where is the 'Cosmic Magic Star Dust' carpet Mike..?

Definitely go with the back row of seats "stepped up" from those in front.

As per Elvis's reply there are heaps of cinema style seats out there and you can even get nice big padded recliners with drink holders built in to the arm rests! Look here for an example:

Decor is a tough one - just make sure you go with reasonably dark colours and make the lighting subtle!

If your looking for gamesroom carpet here in Australia forget it! I looked everywhere and the only stuff I found was around $200 odd dollars a metre (just pattern club carpet). I ended up ordering neon carpet from the USA (it's on the way here now) :D

After contacting a few companies in the USA I highly recommend this place.

Ask for Brenda, she was very helpful and great to deal with.

I'm getting the matrix carpet for my gamesroom.

You could always inquire at a cinema. Try the manager. Could tell you where they got it from. They might even have ofcuts stored. Seen some funky carpets in cinemas

Lights, if you wall mount a fluro then make a boxing for it with the top open, they tend to put out plenty of light.

  • 2 weeks later...

We have progress, the footings have been inpected and approved. Today we placed the posts in position ready for concrete early newt week. We should have it to point where we will have the floor down by the end of next weekend.

Hopefully by christmas I will have it complete and have time to give the theatre room a good test.

Beans bags may be the answer to furniture issue

I will try and put up some pics, its a standard highset 1970s rectangular box. We are following the ouse profile and adding 40 plus Square metres to the end f the house.

It will be sitting on 6 steel posts with car accomidation underneath. Thus freeing up another 30 square metres under the house to extend the games room or add new toys.

A few photos will help explain this, they will be coming soon.

Our block is nearly 3/4 of an Acre.
