System 245 (Namco Time Crisis) Dongles

DevoDave

Question

Hi,

I have a Time Crisis 3 running in Japanese, and another one running in English. The only difference between the two cabinets is the security dongles, as swapping those back and forth takes the language with them.

The System 245 is Playstation2 based, and the dongle looks to be a 64Meg PS2 memory card. Plugging the dongle into a retail PS2 does nothing... the dongle does not appear.

Anyone have any idea if these beasts can be cloned so I can have two English cabs?

DONT PLUG IT INTO YOUR PS2!!!

This has killed many a system 246 dongle. They use different pinouts to the normal PS2 mem cards. I remember reading about some guy overseas who did it, trying to use an action replay to copy the content but ended up killing the dongle.

Might be a myth. Tried to look at the dongles this morning with the PS2, still working this afternoon.

As I said, tried reading one in a PS2, had no luck. Same dongle worked fine in the System 246 cabinet a few minutes later, and has been working ever since.

The System 246 motherboard appears identical to a version 5 PS2 motherboard to a casual inspection. Without evidence to the contrary, I would think the connector to the dongle is 100% compatible to the memory card.

I too read many places on the web where someone has said putting a dongle into a PS2 will kill it, however I had also read a lot of people saying that it was bullshit. Tried it myself, and although i failed to be read, it definitely did not kill the dongle in my case.

i know that people have managed to use ps2 mem cards as dongles with 246/256 as i have seen one

i do not know how it was done and i also know that a few attempting this has killed the original in the process for at least 2 peeps

i am pretty sure there is someone in Australia that has achieved this as a friend of mine received RRV from a fella in Oz and it had a ps2 mem card - it worked

As I explained when you contacted me about 2 weeks ago, I can take care of those for you. You will need to send both dongles.

Ah well, I guess at the same time he could dump the dongles... and thus have more stuff in his library.

DevoDave: Quick, send him your stuff.

TheGuru: Hi, welcome to the forums, hopefully we'll continue seeing you around here, I love your work.

ah! it's a small world. probably it's the same Spanish guy that was bragging to me about how he copied dozens of the carts and converted them to other games. I have the capability to do it, but I just discovered there's a problem reading these weird ROMs and my equipment doesn't like it. So unfortunately at this stage I can't assist :cry

But I'll figure it out if it kills me.

btw, why did you sent your RRV to him?

He bought it from me. I sent it over to him, then he starts a paypal dispute saying that he never received it. Then, he emails me to say that he has got it, but wont return my money because i sent him a PS2 memory card (utter bullshit). He said that it wasn't working, but then admits that when he got it, he pulled it apart.

In the meantime he is accusing me of trying to scam him, whilst he has my cash as well as my game.

ah yes, don't you just love paypal. thats yet another reason to ask for cash / money order first before sending. paypal really sucks and there's nothing you can do. if someone claims the claimer wins every time (it's been documented on a site called 'paypal sucks')

Unfortunately, the machine is on-site at the moment, and we are right in the middle of school holidays which means pulling it off-site is out of the question.

I have an eprom programmer, so I'll be able to read it when I can get hold of it.

I'll see what I can do.

Sweet thanks!

I must say I get quite confused about those TC IOs. I heard several different boads are working. Yours seems to be a Crisis Zone IO with a different program rom.

Would be lovely if you could dump it when possible.

I'll send over some choco for the job. ;)

Regards

Arnaud

PS: if you have any TC4 knowledge I'd be glad to have some info aswel. I might have access to a TC4 board quite soon. ^^
