T-Mould or NOT T-Mould

Recommended Posts

Quick question regarding T-Moulding.

Has anyone skipped T-Moulding on an MDF cabinet and been happy with the result?

I built some work benches some time ago and with a rounded edge they lasted forever and didn't seem to get damaged. The finish was sound, smooth and, well, I can't see the point at the moment for T-Mould other than a colour contrast.

Please convince me I am mistaken - nicely though ;-)

Thanks folks

Stu

I suppose if you not using any vinal or covering its fine as you have nothing to hide. Ive seen a few Systems that down have t molding on. I think some times the T Molding is just for bumps and scrapes cos im sure if you caught some of these systems from the side they would just snap.

My ideas are shifting around a lot at the moment - mostly because of where I have to stick the thing - namely in the living area - open plan, can see it from everywhere means it has to somehow blend in without looking rediculous.

I think the arcade aesthetics are enough to create a wow! factor that would eliminate the decor clash but I am biased. Wife isn't so convinced so I am battling on two fronts.

I am currently thinking of MATT JET BLACK with minimal artwork to give a little contrast. I guess I will just have to wait and see.

WOW! factor was the highest ranking requisite on my original plan but now it feel like it should be "Invisible"

Maybe now I can start to jsutify the Bar / Entertainment area that we have been planning for so long :)

As usual, your input has been immensley helpful - very glad and proud to have joined AA.

Stu

I didnt use t-mold on my first cab.

I used a planer and took off both edges on all the panels.

Here a link.

Looks good enough , but t-mold will give you a more professional job, tho.

Nice job - how did you get the edge so perfectly painted?

As this is first cab I am more interetsed in the construction / lessons rather than the finish in general terms. I know I can get my money back straight away when it is built so the one that follows I can focus on finish ...

Ahh the challenges! Still more required time to think before starting the build - damn this is painful (but necessary!!)

The damn thing is so over-thought I am making myself sick :lol

Thanks

Stu

I offer you a compromise: Matt black bartop with more subtle black & chrome T-molding:

There won't be ANY T-Mold on my current project but then its not a 'classic' cab design, if I were building a classic cab I would use it for sure, for that authentic arcade feel. I've seen some really nice T-Mold/Cabinet colour contrasts especially where artwork is concerned. Colour in the artwork is given a 'lift' by the T-Mold or vice versa if you get my drift. I think if a cabinets worth building it should stand out.
