wingtipvortex
Ive got an old laptop which has no HDD in it. I have an external 100gb 2.5inch, which i formatted to put in the lappy. Everytime i put the drive into the lappy, the darn thing wont power up? Remove the drive, and it powers up straight away. My question is, can i run the HDD from USB and install Windows onto that? Emohawk
Try update the BIOS if there is a newer one. Running the OS of the USB will be very show. It can be done..

My bet is you have the drive upside down, you put that sucker in upside down and you short the power instantly. The HDD size wont stop the notebook from power on, the only issue with size is the BIOS may not recognize the full size or at all... A BIOS update usually corrects this

lien_Zed
*usually* but not always on the ide plug in the laptop it is either keyed or has a plastic bit shoved inside one of the connectors so the hdd will only fit one way i bet if you flip the lappie over and get the model number and fireup goole and putin the model number and also add the magic workd bios update or firmware update you will find a small 1.4 meg image to copy to floppy and boot the lappie off the floppy and update the bios and all will be good
