gints
Hey guys, About to move house and found out its got CAT5 through the walls, so no more shitty WiFi on my desktop PC. However, we have 6 fixed computers which will be wired, and 4 laptops, so wireless would be useful for them (take to lounge room etc.). Basically how should I set it up? An ADSL router with 6+ ports plus WiFi would be great, but I dont think they exist. Should I get an ADSL router with 4 ports and Wifi with a 'forward' port or whatever to forward the internet data an 8 way switch? Or a stand alone modem hooked up to a 6+ port ethernet router and WiFi? Fair few options I guess, if any networking guru's could give me some tips and some potential products would be great! RaMpAgE
I use a vigor2910G, you could hook up a switch to this.
David_AVD
An ADSL modem with wifi feeding a separate 8 port switch should be all you need. Cheap as.
Headless Turkey
Don't get too excited there :lol Somewhere in said new house there will be a patch pannel that relates to all the ports in the house, probably in the garage. This is where you will put your Basic 8 Port Switch For example You'll also need 8 Short patch cables to patch into the panel from the switch ( .5m would be fine ) I'd recomend you get them from http://www.lindy.com.au it will be a fraction of the price. (ie $ 2.50 as opposed to $10.00+ from retail shops) This will activate all the ports in the house. Then you can just use a normal ADSL Wireless router in one of the networks ports and this will share it out through the switch near the pannel. Probably put this in the lounge room so you have the wirless there. I'd get a Billion 7300 for your needs. if your planning on flogging the hell out of your connection with Torrents go for one of the 74xx series. Handle it better, but you'd have to really be flogging it.
gints
Yeah all the 6 cables meet up in the lounge room already, so thats abviously where the switch will go. Do pretty much any ADSL WiFi routers have the ability to 'forward' then WAN connection to another router? Will look into the Billions, it will cop a bit of a flogging with 4 or 5 prettty heavy users

gints
Because 4 port is not enough and we need to connect 6/7 devices, I guess I should have called it a switch. Does any ADSL WiFi router have the ability to 'forward' the WAN connection to another Switch to then share it amongst its devices
dmworking247
Sorry if this has already been said, but I'm drunk, lazy, and its late. Just get a standard ADSL modem without a hub/etc, and then patch it to an 8-port hub/switch. Thats how I run my house. It also helps if one component fails you can replace it... the less 'function' you have in one device, the less risk you have. I'll check back in the morning and see if that made sense. Ciao. Headless Turkey
The 4 ports on the back of your router is a switch in itself. So you just plug a cable from your Modem/Router/Switch into your normal switch and it sorts out the rest for you automatically. :) This is why I hate marketing deptarments, they don't use terminlogy correctly and just confuse the hell out of people. opm881
any router/modem will be able to hook up to another one, BUT! make sure you turn off dhcp on the second modem and make sure its actual ip is set to be out of the ranges that the original router can designate for people. Otherwise it will be a pain in the ass
Emohawk
If you have a ADSL model/router with the 4 ports. Just get a small dumb switch you will need a cross over cat5 cable to go from one of the 4 ports from from the ADSL modem into the switch. Unless the switch has a uplink port (Cross over port) then a normal cable will be file just use that port.

A normal cable will be fine.

I still have some older switches kicking around that don't but any new one well yes it will be fine..
