My Husbands Christmas Cocktail Cabinet

Recommended Posts

;)Since photo's were requested when i joined the forum, i thought now that im closer to having the table finished, so there-for have more time (as i have become a mame-widow LOL)..... i would do an Update on how the project is going....

Well it is pretty much done, it just needs some finishing touches, but it is perfectly playable......... obviously cause i have time to do this.........

well, in my wisdom, i decided to make this cocktail cabined for my husband for xmas...... in very late November........NOT SMART!!!!!!!..... really i needed more time, but i work well under pressure (usually) so its all good (or so i thought.)....

I ordered the mainboard and processor on the advice of a someone who is supposed to know lots about computers......hmmmm obviously had never had anything to do with Mame or any of the games...... as i was advised to buy a slower/older board & processor as the new processors run the game way to quickly etc etc.......... hmmmm well, i found out (on xmas day)...... that is a load of crap......... my itx board with a 800mhz processor was practically useless... so that was a great start... .... anyway i wont go into the 'every problem possible' details as i did outline that in another thread looking for advice on some other stuff......

So my husbands very unique-non traditional cocktail that was built entirely out of timber (merbau & cypress pine) to match my house came to life the day after xmas... we worked endlessly on xmas day and boxing day finishing up the wiring etc.... but Dale was like a kid on chrismas with a new lego set...... so he was kinda glad i didnt finish it.......

so here is a pic of what we did to our house on xmas day, in order to finish the Mame cabinet........ keeping in mind we live in Darwin, where it is too bloody hot to do anything outside, so the 'shed' was moved into the air-con (ie-my living/dining/kitchen area :lol).........

and finially the finished product (well almost.... the sanding & finishing isn't done yet, and the glass hasn't been set in properly, and the bottom left kick panel was cut too short so it is missing ..... the building supply store is closed until 5th jan...typical LOL.) and then next is a shot of the happy husband playing Frogger, which was the game that inspired it all in the first place.......

..........now i just need to build the stools to match....... it is never ending :)

i know the set in glass is unusual, but Dale & I are both big timber fans, so at his request, we decided to not cover the entire top with glass........ and the same applies for the top directly above the control panels..... Dale didnt want it cut in at all..... he thinks there is enough room there without cutting the top in..... so since it is his table..... who am I to argue?????:unsure

Good stuff!!

You might want to consider a piece of glass that covers the whole top section, will look a lot neater. If the top is removable you could take it to a glazier and get it cut to fit exactly. Then just use some glass clips to hold it in place.:)

first of all, excellent work! i like that you have kept the control panels nice and tidy. not try to put 100 buttons on them.

second, always remember i suggested a minimum 1ghz :badgrin (admittedly too late) and you probably realise now, that the computer cant run the game TOO fast as it throttles. but just for giggles, unthrottle galaga and try and play it!

third, i disagree with those that say get a full glass top. while i like my cab with its glass top, thats because its supposed to look much like an original. dalendie has already said they love wood. if they had just made a regular coffee table, would they feel the compulsion to cover it in glass? the first few spilt beers will seal it up nicely anyway :D

again, excellent work!

Or coffee / beer spill getting onto the monitor and below.

ahhhaaaa....:D see, i'm not just a pretty face though....(not even i would say LOL)...

the glass will be silconed in with black silicone and the inside of the monitor cut in thingy (sorry....girl words)....will be beveled and painted black....or maybe made in black plastic... dunno yet............. but there will be no fluid leakage to the monitor of that i will be making sure.....

also, the entire top comes off the cabinet, it is set on much like a gift box...... as the hinge's would have struggled with the weight of the 38mm solid timber top....

so thanks very much for the comments, and the praise (I bow down sweepingly in appreciation) i appreciate them very very much, but I unlike most wives (i'm told???????) I am governed by what the 'little Mr' wants....... it is his cabinet after all :).........

Although i must admit i took over the other night and the comment i got was.....

"Hey bub, i reacon next, we should make one of those for me.....don't ya think?.....":rolleyes:rolleyes

Smart ass!!!!!!!:evil:badgrin

Oh believe me, i was remembering that you told me that when i couldnt bloody play anything on xmas day LOL.............. Frogger is soooooo boring that slow.....

anyway here is a photo i took today after oiling the timber, not the final coat and its a shitty photo as its dark here and the flash on the mobile phone sux....

but this is it.... nicely oiled, it looks pretty good oiled i think........ possibly a fraction to dark, but hopefully that will tone down as it dry's....

Just a little tip with the silicon.

Tape off the bits where you don't want it, using black electrical tape or the blue painters tape. It doesn't leave a gummy residue when you peel it off.

and the other thing is once you splat your silicone in there where you want it, hock a bit of spit onto your finger and run your finger over the silicone to smooth it out neatly. You will need to keep re-loading your finger often.

Human spit is about the only thing that silicone does not stick to.

Yeah, a bit grose, but it is seriously the best way i've found to do a neat job of it.

.

you need to experiment and tweak. when i first tried mame, it was on a 400 mhz pc. and games like frogger were fine. you may just have to get an earlier version of mame. in a general sense, the older versions TEND to run faster. maybe pose the question in the MAME section, and someone will guide you in the right direction.

Thanks for that tip, it is one i have previously discovered while installing my glass panel shower screens...... its wierd huh........ Dale is one of those frustratingly annoying people who can tell you why in detail, but i just tune out LOL..........:lol I dont care why, i just do it if it works :023:.......he could have been something very know-it-all & accademic..... if he wasnt a born tradie (not to mention a clown....) :)........ Cars are in his blood.... theres no fighting with it LOL.......

Guess which type of games have all been 'tested' in the cabinet LOL.......:lol

And, its made by a LADY for her husband, awesome. Simply awesome.

Congrats on a great job :D

I dont see a lady????? where's the lady??????? :badgrin

Much to my Mothers disgust, and not for her lack of trying, no-one would ever accuse me of being a 'lady' :).......... Female YES..... a girl YES.......Butch...NO!!!! but most definatly NOT a lady LOL.......:lol:lol

Thanks very much for the compliment though :).....

And Big George , you are a complete and utter legend for helping me (well really 'help' is the wrong word, you pretty much did it for me LOL...) set it all up properly, and running well, Dale's exact words were.......(keeping in mind, typical terroitory tradie talk...)....

"that bloke is a fucking top bloke, shame he lives so far away, id take him over a few cartons and shake the mans hand..... he's fucking awesome....Fuck it, sydneys not that far, i might do it anyway....."

thats two whole sentence's for Dale & he looked up from the game he was playing...... so he is REALLY greatful LOL........;)

Hahahaha i'll shatter that excuse for you too..... I dont have a shed either LOL.... i built most of it inside in the lounge/dining room of my house LOL........:lol which is where i do most of my building stuff, as its too damn hot outside..... (ive kept all of the saws etc outside....but the power tools come inside with me :o)
