Monday Pinball Questionaire - AskJacob 29-12-08

Recommended Posts

Oops didn't realise it was Monday already :lol gotta love holidays!

Could a mod please move this to the trivia section - I can't post directly there.

1. Earliest pinball memory?

The earliest I remember would be Pier One (now sadly a crappy factory outlet) - which used to be a sizeable arcade over the water here in Sydney. I remember being able to see water between the planks, meters below. I have no idea what the pinball machine was as I was maybe 7 or 8 - I had to stand on a milk crate to see the playfield. What I do remember is the pure fascination of all the gadgets and lights trapped under that glass, like a hidden world. From that point I was hooked. I don't think I even got to play it!

2. All time favourite pin? Why?

Wow that is hard. While a "cookie cutter" :badgrin I guess it would have to be Indiana Jones. Why? Well, it was in a rec room of a job I hated years ago, and it got me through some tough times indeed... I could play away, and getting GC would be the best stress reliever possible. That and it is a machine my lovely wife also really likes, it was in all the pubs when we used to go out.

3. Favourite pinball manufacture?

Pick an era, and I'll pick a manufacturer :lol - I can't decide an overall. All made their own impressions and innovations - I also believe it wasn't so much the manufacturer buit the people involved that made the machines great (such as art, sound, programming etc).

4. Favourite game in your collection? Why?

It would have to be the IJ, we waited for 3 years to get the opportunity to get one, then had to wait another 3 years for the opportunity to bring it down out of storage in Brisbane home. That, and the reasons I gave above!

5. How long have you been collecting?

Hmm I bought my first machine in 1999, was still at home, so it was crammed in next to my bed in the bedroom. Does collecting start with the 1st machine? :lol

6. First game and how did you find it?

1st machine was Black Rose, I bought it from the Pinball Doctor out in prospect. I had saved enough money to get one, and I was damn well going to get a machine that day. I had a play of the ones he had there, and the BR and I clicked. I remember being so excited about it being delivered - I wouldn't shut up about it, and took the day off it got delivered. My girlfriend (now wife) got GC that day - she still reminds me about it :lol

7. Do you still have it?

Oh yes, it's a keeper. A good "pub style" machine - you can walk up and play, no need to study the rule sheets. I love the theme and sound too.

8. What are you currently working on?

I bought a project Stern Magic, a great compliment to the Stern Dracula I have with the skull bumper caps. I am amazed how different these machines are, even though they are same manufacturer and year of production!

I have a fair bit of work ahead of me - which reminds me I need to update my resto thread!

9. Most wanted game to add to your collection?

Most Unrealistic: Medieval Madness as it is my wife's favourite game ever

Most Likely: Bram Stoker's Dracula, after playing it at Shock_and_Awes (mark's) a few weeks ago I got reminded how great I thought it was.

10. Best all time bargain game added to your collection?

A.G. Soccer-ball - I went to buy a really badly represented IJ and it was expensive and knackered, and saw this oddball green cab in the distance. WTF is that I asked, and ended up buying it rather cheap (especially compared to the IJ). I hadn't heard of it before, but thought it looked pretty unique.

11. Worst ever miss – tell us about the one that got away!

I must have erased all the horror from my mind - nothing really comes to mind right now. I'm not really on the hunt, just an opportunist - like with the Stern Magic - if I have the money, room and inclination I can go for it.

12. Worst ever purchase – tell us about the game you wished you never bought

The A.G. Soccer-Ball :lol I still can't quite regard it as a pinball - more like a foosball table. It is great with a mate, but pretty unexciting on your own. Big problem is that even though it is a "rare" low production machine, they keep popping up here in Australia, and it will never pull top $$ :badgrin

13. Describe your collection

A.G. Soccer-Ball - complete and working except for missing both marquee plastics (I have the artwork though)

Black Rose - Complete and working, in very good nick and I haven't had to do much work on it at all to be honest. Overdue for a re-rubber though...

Dracula (Stern) - Complete and working, with a flakey backglass

Indiana Jones - My next project will be to put the decals on (and fix) the cabinet. The PF and electronics was part of my previous major restoration.

Magic (Stern) - Major Project machine, keep an eye on the resto thread to see how that goes :)

14. Describe your gamesroom

I have a small room in the house (lucky me!) but since adding the 5th machine I don't think I can continue with my plan, and will need to rethink it - I'd like a sofa to man-cave it!

15. Do you have other games other than pinball?

We have an ex-rsl pool table in a screened veranda room out back, a buggered foozball table my brother in law picked up for me (which I have no room for!), I have a cabaret with a 48-in-1 and a fat lowboy, currently with a Mortal Kombat bootleg in it, awaiting some more horizontal PCBs and a JPAC'd mame setup...

16. Where can you see the hobby in 10 years?

Well, if there are no pure companies making them, crusty's like me will be having their own go at making some hobby machines. Parts will still be being made though I reckon, as the home hoarder market still seems to be growing, which is great to see.

Sorry this is a little brief, the Mrs has been hovering around me, I'm running late to head over and help a mate move his HOU JP up some stairs :lol

I'll update with some pics this evening!

Cheers

Jacob
