Fish Tales
I have a 8400GS in this machine. Yep its a budget card, but runs games like Assasins Creed, and Call of Duy 3 on med-high settings. IMO you can pay too much for card, and it only marginally be better than a cheapie.
opm881
@LOTR reason why that would be because of the bottleneck between the cpu gpu and ram.
LOTR4U
@LOTR reason why that would be because of the bottleneck between the cpu gpu and ram. he supposedly had a better CPU and same Ram 2 gig and newer/better card :unsure I think sometimes the older cards can be as good. :unsure get an ati 4870 best card in that price range will check it out. opm881
yea, like the others have said, the HD4870 is great. I will be upgrading my pc graphics card up to a either a 4870 or 4850 depending on how much cash i feel like spending + FSB of my processor is only 800mhz so dont want to waste extra money to just get bottleneck
Spaced
HD4870 is good, it just runs friggin hot. Good if you live somewhere cool. I love my 9800GTX although I wouldn't buy a card under 1GB of ram anymore. Lots of good cards in that price range and a little less. check out msy.com.au for good prices on cards. Goes without saying, if you're running 4GB of ram and 1GB card you will want to use vista 64bit. Just check that the card you are buying supports audio through hdmi. Bikkies
Just check that the card you are buying supports audio through hdmi. How does that actually work. Can it grab the source audio from the sound card onboard/pci/pci-e and route it through the Graphics Card into the HDMI cable?

Can it grab the source audio from the sound card onboard/pci/pci-e and route it through the Graphics Card into the HDMI cable? The card has an audio decoder on board, like an onboard sound card
Spaced
I dunno man, a card with more than 1gb of ram is only if you are running very high resolutions! The card has an audio decoder on board, like an onboard sound card I'd get 1GB because it's becoming very quickly the new "standard" where as before it was 512 when I got my card. If the difference in price isn't that big it's worth it. How does that actually work. Can it grab the source audio from the sound card onboard/pci/pci-e and route it through the Graphics Card into the HDMI cable? It's a cable that runs from your video card to your motherboard (or other way around). Both your video card and motherboard need to support it. Your video card and motherboard both need an SPDIF connector.

Everything out of the one hdmi cable - saying that, it outputs a range of high quality sound, but not true HD. For that you need a specialist sound card and certain equipment like listed above. LOTR4U
I told my brother to get a 8800GTX if he can find one that is cheap, simply because I know from my experience with it that nothing seems to stop it that I have come across. All the latest games I have on my PC, and at full graphics doesn't even make it flinch. :unsure so that leads me to think? why all these new models over and over again. Is it simply a money making exercise? :unsure same as CPU's, I have checked my quad core with multiple high rescoure apps running and it still doesn't get near capacity. :unsure its like they have the tech for big jumps but instead release small jumps to make more money :x

When I'm encoding video my cpu runs at 99% and hammers through stuff. Nah you can just buy the HD video cards which have a sound chip on board. Everything out of the one hdmi cable - saying that, it outputs a range of high quality sound, but not true HD. For that you need a specialist sound card and certain equipment like listed above. You learn something new every day. I thought off the soundcard or mobo was the only option.
