Guitar

Recommended Posts

So I've always wanted to learn to play guitar ever since I was a nipper. Finally shelled out and bought myself a bass and am using some training stuff at home.

Anyone else playing or learning to play? What are/did you use to get started?

Unless you know how to read music (I certainly don't despite years of piano lessons as a kid!) then learn to read tab music. Download a heap of tabs and practice, practice, practice!

A good friend of mine taught me the basics of reading tabs. Can't get my head around notes, never worked for me. Yeah plan is to just keep practicing

Hardest thing to get used to is hand placement.

Find guitar playing magazines at your local newsagent, i think there are some out there now specifically for bass that have guitar tab, for songs you like

Learn how to read the tab it is a lot easier

Learn to play songs that you like not just scales and chords you will find that it will keep you more interested

I really want to learn to play electric guitar... my daughter wants to learn to play bass.

Aside from 'where the hell do I play it and not annoy everyone', I worry that I just wont get it... my daughter/anybody can kick my ass at guitar hero, so I figure my fingers aren't fast enough.

... and yet, I can touch type at 87wpm +/-, go figure.

There is no way you can compare playing a guitar to "guitar hero" or how fast you speed type!

Start by getting a guitar and seeing if your fingers are flexable and long enough to actually form chords.....Because they are the basis to all songs unless you are the next Pantera, guitar is nothing like being described.

Yes i play.

Trust me I wasn't meaning to compare guitar hero to playing a real guitar, its more about my fine motor skills and speed.

Maybe I'll cruise cash converters and see what I could pick up to practice on.

Any tips on entry-level-second-hand gear and the price I'd expect to pay? How can I distinguish shit from gold?

Any guitar where the neck is still lined up properly with the body (can usually tell by eye).

Buy that put new strings on suss out tuning then practice....and as i said practice chords before wild solos, and dont get discouraged if at first you sound shit because everybody does;)

Or just play bass. Everyone knows you don't need skill to play bass. :evil

Exactly! Hence why I'm learning bass :p

I've got long fingers and long arms I'm 6ft neat and the bass I got seems big to me. I think there are junior kits available.

I got a kit from music express in Brisbane, best price around. There was a mixup at the start but they got me sorted out. This is the pack I got http://www.musicexpress.com.au/mexpress/0301670.html it worked out about the same as getting everything together anyway. I'm pretty sure you can track down a junior bass for your daughter to start on.

The local trading papers are a great source for instruments people are too impatient to learn.

Strangely enough I just bought a guitar on impulse last weekend, well not totally impulse, my wife said a guy playing guitar is a turnon for her...... ;)

Bought an electric accoustic for $200, I'd like to get an solid body electric, but they're a bit more expensive, esp after you need to get the amp, etc. so this is fine for the moement to actually learn to play and ensure I'm not just going to give it up again in a couple of weeks time

So far I can play 6 notes, well 5 if you count the fact that 2 of them are E :rolleyes

I'm still trying to get the hang of my first two cords and changing between them, going to take some time as my soft IT fingers need to get used to holding them strings down. But I'm getting there, and it's kind of fun.

I've taught myself to play .. never had a lesson in my life. It may show, but I can play well enough that people who don't play themselves are impressed. I simply found tabs for songs I liked, and learnt the chords as required.

My advice.. start practicing some of the commonly used chords A, Am, E, Em, D, Dm, F, G, C. With those chords, you will be able to play hundreds of songs that you already know. As soon as you can, move onto bar chords. F#m, B#m etc ... I found bar chords the most challenging when I first started and would often skip over songs that had them. They really open the door to alot of songs you otherwise wouldn't be able to play .. and I found my playing in general improved once I had mastered them

I'd be doing the same if I were to start learning again. Problem is lefties get ripped off blind on kit and I'm not as keen as I'd be if I had access to the variety right handers do.

My friend picked up a left handed electric guitar from Billy Hyde for $180. Although you do get what you pay for in regards to guitars.

Haha it must be an IT thing. I'm just working out how to hit the notes correctly so I don't get that terrible "twang" happening. Just practicing for an hour a night I'm starting to see a very small improvement.

Yes and no.. you can find some great learning guitars very cheap, and choice of amp makes a big different. I had a cheap Epiphone Strat clone and a Roland Cube Amp... that Amp alone made the guitar sound SO much better than what it should have for the price.

Spaced - what kind of music do you like? Some favourite artists mayhaps?

I like a lot of music from the 60's to current. Basically all alternative that isn't emo or pop.

I'm thinking of starting with Creedance and AC/DC. My mate is getting a drum kit near the end of the year and his missus has a guitar so I'm hoping we jam some old tunes over summer (or at least have a go).

What did the amp set you back if I dare ask.

I wish I could remember.. but it wasn't expensive. UNFORTUNATELY I just sold it on ebay for like 100 bucks .. bad timing lol. I would definitely recommend it though if you can find one on ebay... I had the Roland Cube 15 - http://www.roland.com/products/en/CUBE-15/

I would definitely recommend it, it had some built in levels of distortion which made the guitar sound pretty chunky.

Cool! Pretty noob question but is there much difference between a normal guitar amp and a bass guitar amp?

This is the one I got in the pack. http://www.andysmusiconline.com/products/fender-2315300010.html

good for a practice and jam session but that's it.
