AFM Backboard Mod

Shock_And_Awe

Question

Hi Guys,

I'm doing a resto on my AFM and finally finished swapping all the underside wiring and stuff onto my new playfield. I have a transparent backboard that I want to install so I've got to get this done before I can put my playfield back in the cab.

I'm copying the lighting effects I want from what Chris Hutchins did as seen in the link below. All no probs but he said he is connecting the lights up to the "cabinet GI". Where do I find the cabinet GI? The only GI on the cab I can think of is for the coin slots on the coin door. Next Q, where / how is the best way to connect to this?

The pictures of what I'm doing are the last 2 on this page and then over onto the next page.

Thanks for any help.

Mark.

Mate I have limited knowledge and I'm sure there will be alot more help coming. The cabinet GI is usually connected to J120 or J121. One will be cabinet and the other backbox (typically). There may be an easier way but you would have to see what wiring are on these plugs and trace it around the machine I spose.

Attached is an idea of what goes where on the driver PCB. Hope this helps a bit.

Possibly he may mean playfield lighting when he says cabinet, otherwise I think you mentioned the coin door lighting which I think is listed as cabinet?????

Dave, was I on the right track or way off?

I took it as playfield lightning = cabinet lighting, you are right with your backbox/ cabinet GI connectors though. Coin door is another connector, forgot which J designation ........ 2 wire purple/white wires.

On the link, the comment from Chris Hutchins is that he connected the new lights to the cabinet GI so as not to strain the playfield GI.

Quote from Chris "Most of this will be wired to the cabinet GI so it does not strain the strans on the playfield or create light flickering, blow a fuse etc."

I can't find any connector on the driver board for cabinet GI unless I'm overlooking something.

What I was saying about the coin door was that it is the only illumination in the cabinet that I can think of - what else would cabinet GI be for?

I think you are right. I would consider the coin insert lighting as cabinet GI.

There are only 2 lamps on this circuit usually (1 per slot insert) so the not straining the playfield GI makes sense to me.

Cheers

thanks guys.

J119 looks like it's for the flippers. It looks like it's J122-3 Lamp Col 8 to coin door Bd

Does that sound right?

Next question is what would be the best way to connect to this power. Splice into the wire that runs down into the cabinet?

Thanks everyone for the help. I'm all good now (at least with the theory side ;) ) so will have this done in the next day or two.

On a side note, Chris mentions the unreliablity of the switches in WPC 95 games. I have found with every one of my WPC95 games I've had to replace my rollover switches but never a problem with ANY rollover on a game prior to WPC95. Anyone else found this?
