Ninty DS Lite Australian Launch - June 1st

Recommended Posts

I've been waiting a while for this news... Probably the only game gear I'll buy on launch day.

Australia, Melbourne, May 5th 2006 – Nintendo Australia is pleased to announce the new member of the Nintendo DS™ range, the upgraded Nintendo DS™ Lite, will be available in Australia on June 1st, at SRP$199.95.

Nintendo DS Lite, launching in Polar White, features brighter screens, is approximately two-thirds the size of the original Nintendo DS and about 20 percent lighter. It also features a larger stylus and repositioned button layout, all the while maintaining all of the original Nintendo DS features, as well as screen size.

“We love the Nintendo DS and the new experiences it has brought to gaming,” says Rose Lappin, Director of Sales and Marketing. “the super stylish Nintendo DS Lite adds a touch of class to the unit and the brighter screen is remarkably vibrant. Expect some fantastic software products in the coming months to take advantage of this.”

In Australia, Nintendo DS continues to sell through at a higher rate than all other handheld systems, and remains the best selling handheld console, since its release just over a year ago.

The Nintendo DS Lite has experienced phenomenal success in Japan. Since its launch earlier this year, Nintendo have struggled to keep up with incredibly high consumer demand.

With a series of exciting and innovative software releases, Nintendo Australia aims to continue this trend:

• The highly anticipated Metroid® Prime Hunters is scheduled for release May 25th. Blast your way through six ferocious bounty hunters in adventure mode, take on up to four friends wirelessly or battle online using Nintendo® Wi-Fi Connection.

• Twenty years after Nintendo's biggest franchise was born, the Mario Bros.® return in a dazzling, all-new platformer sure to set players' fingers twitching. New SUPER MARIO BROS.™ arrives June 8th.

• Dr Kawashima’s Brain Training™: How Old Is Your Brain?, releasing June 15th, is designed to keep people's minds active with fun mental workouts that incorporate the user-friendly voice-command and touch-screen capabilities of Nintendo DS. Brain Training als

o includes more than 100 sudoku puzzles.

Oh I have been waiting so long for this news... where has it come from? I wouldn't have expeced it to launch before it goes on sale in the US.

It's probably the only thing I'll be buying on launch day too... alonside with Wii perhaps.

EDIT I should have looked before I asked... it's right there on nintendo.com.au :p

I'll be making the upgrade. The touch screen opens up a heap of variation in gameplay eg Trauma Center: Under the knife, peform op's with the touch screen:

Yeah, that "WTF" is seconded by me.

What exactly do you mean by flop? The DS is outselling every other console (handheld or not) in Japan (and considering their market is 10 times that of the US, and about 1000 times that of ours).

Handheld gaming, and particularly the DS, is massive. Its sales figures shit all over the "next gen" consoles and beats other handhelds such as the PSP by a fair margin.

Check out sites like magicbox and others for sales stats:

Then once you've done that, reconsider the word "flop". :)

It looks great the DSlite.

I wasn't overly impressed with the origianl DS but this 2nd incarnationof it looks sweet. I probably won't be purchasing it though at $199. It definately has the look and feel of the old Game & Watch though.

Now, if only it had a built in phone and a calender I could sync with Thunderbird, I would be set. lol Oh that's right, it's a game. (forehead slap)

Bring on the Revolution. (Wii) That I will be laying $ for.

No way better than a PSP! DS is crap.

*sigh*

1) It's purely subjective

2) Based on sales figures, the rest of the world disagrees with you.

The DS sees lower sales in Australia because of this strange "my sexuality is goverened by the material possessions I buy" Freudian rubbish going through people's heads around here. That's something I've never understood. Plus the whole desire for faster processors and more polys rather than actually caring about how fun a game is.

In countries where people care more about gaming and having fun rather than what they look like to their mates if they got caught playing Nintendogs, or how many polys their console can output from whitepapers, the sales speak for themselves.

Very True.

I won't make this a PSP Vs DS discussion, but just give the reasons why I've decided to get the DS over the PSP...

* The DS just plays games. That's all I want. I'll use my MP3 player for MP3s, and I dont want to watch movies on the run. I think the PSP is trying to be too many things at once IMHO. We all know that the UMD's are on the way out, with the studios making no money on them http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=06/04/04/005201

If I want a portable media device I'll buy one of These... all unlocked out of the box, even comes with the dev kit. No need to hack or run an old bios, or re-encode your movies... just drop a divx on the memory card and it works.

* the great range of games :D

It's kind of funny how everywhere we turn at the pre-E3 press events, the only people we ever see playing on handhelds always but always are playing a Nintendo DS—no PSPs in sight ever, not even at yesterday's Sony event.

"No PSPs in sight ever". Bummer for the PSP lovers.

And a PSP isn't a toy? Come on, they're all toys after all. Just about everything I own is a toy, my car, my bike, my arcade machine, etc.etc.

The DS and just about everything Nintendo makes remains aimed at kids just like all the consoles used to be. The difference is that some of us are happy to admit we still have that kid inside of us whereas the others go and buy PSP's.
