felixthadog
Has anyone used the Mag-Stik Plus joystick from Ultimarc? I like the idea of switching from 4-way to 8-way (and vice versa) without having to access the underside of the joystick assembly, but I am unsure about the quality of the joystick itself compared to the Sanwa joysticks I currently have. felixthadog
See http://www.aussiearcade.com/showthread.php?t=10668&highlight=Mag-Stik OK, in that thread you state: "The feel is 'different' though. Because it is relying on a magnetic force to return the stick to centre it is very tactile". What exactly does that mean? :unsure Matthew

The stick is *VERY* short throw, and the microswitches are really 'clicky'. There is also a bit more resistance to movement than mainline sticks, which combined with the short throw might not make it ideal for fighters. dmworking247
Sounds great as a compromise stick though if you're into a lot of 8-ways but play an equal mix of old 4 way games. I know that I dont bother playing pacman and Donkey Kong etc beause its too much of a pain to switch to 4 way... hence why on my upcoming bartop I've made a dedicated 4-way control panel with a zippy stick. When I'm in the US I'm going to pick up two mag sticks for future projects/to try out... and I'll change the microswitches to something less clicky. Viper
I had the predecessor to the mag stick which is esentially the same stick but used spring rather than magnetic centering. I still have one that'll be going in my cabaret. For me I like the clicky short throw but I don't play fighters either. I hated the SANWA sticks my old Astro had. I bought the soft click switches off Andy also but never installed them.

Intigod, do you play many classic games like DKong or Pacman? Don't you find the characters get 'stuck' when you make sudden directional changes if your joystick is set to 8-way? In my experience the games get confused.
felixthadog
I think I will just stick with my SANWA joysticks, I don't have any issues using them and I will just get used to playing 4-way games with the 8-way setup :) Matthew

Same here. I gotta say though, once you have a MAME cab and start going through all the old games it only takes a couple of games of Pacman to really piss you off. Scotty T
Yep. I set my Zippy to 4 way, purely on how friggin hard it was on 8 way trying to play 4 way games... Sucked big time... This joystick looks the goods, but exy
DevoDave
It may be exy, but it saves you having a Frankenpanel. One joystick, easily swapped from 8 way to four way. Buttons placed close by. I love it.
narf_
i had a pair sticks that are identical to these spare lying around off a CP that belongs to a future project machine http://www.happcontrols.com/joysticks/universal_joy.htm going to see how they go for my 48in1 cabaret. ill test them once my dam harness arrives got it set to 8 way and feels like 4-way wont be a hassle as you need to push a little hard for the diagonal. Will take getting used to there very tightly sprung and short throw have the added bonus of a quick spin and can set at 45 degree. i took off the little lugs as i find them a pain and not really needed

intigod
the 8 way works a treat on pacman ect no worries been giving it a work out last night hmmmm i might have to consider something other than the zippys i have. i tuned the microswitches to make it easier to hit diagonals for 8way games (fighters etc). but now it is very easy to run into problems when playing 4way games, :(
DevoDave
the 8 way works a treat on pacman ect no worries been giving it a work out last night It will work, but I bet your score on Pacman will be higher if you use the joystick in 4-way mode. I cannot believe that anyone would be happy playing pacman on an 8-way.

JasonC
so from this thread I couldn't really tell if the verdict was positive or negative on the mag-stik ????? when I run the 48 in 1 would I even need to switch to 8 way? regards Jason
