  1. Midway Galaga When I was a kid my uncle got me into playing Galaga which was his favourite game. He ended up buying a copy for my NES and we played for many hours. As an early teen when I first got into the arcade scene, I always adored the Midway Galaga cabinets, but never really thought much into tracking one down. I did have a generic cabs with 60 in 1, but didn't end up holding onto it. A couple of years back he was in the market for a cab himself, but didn't end up working out. The process however, had them in my line of sight, and i decided to look into getting one for myself. If you read through my TMNT posts, you'll see above everything else, I really love things in as original-condition as possible. I wanted to find something in original shape, paint, artwork, in contrast to something repainted / fully restored with reproduction art. My thought process was that if I wanted perfection, I may as well do a scratch build. I found a couple Midway Galaga's in the US, and was in talks with one guy there - but found a lot of them had strayed a fair bit from what they were originally. Some re-wired to JAMMA, or sides re-painted only, amongst other things. Then a member on here had one which was a project. Needed a fair bit of TLC, but was original and mostly complete, so I jumped on it and here I am. The good: - Mostly complete - All original - all build tags on wiring, build number stapled inside, Namco Bally plaque, engraved build number all matched - Screen still worked The bad: - Missing rear door - Bottom rear section paint had peeled (still had the original plastic protective sheet, but paint had stuck to it instead of the wood) - Internal floor was chipboard and broken in - Some swelling at the bottom, but not too serious - T Molding shot - Dead game board - 12v issues on the original linear PSU - Fluro tubes kept blowing - No coin door lights - Holes from lockbar - Filthy and smelt bad Pics On arrival, the first thing I done was strip it down, and put all the parts in a spare room. A fair bit of cleaning was required to the parts and the cab itself The cab appears to be MDF, but the floor they used from Midway was chipboard along with some Ikea style quick-assembly lugs and some glued in triangles. The silly thing is, all the weight of the cab sits on this floor as the wheels and leg levelers attach to it. I ripped the destroyed floor out and put in a Plywood replacement with some reinforcement. I used the broken floor as a template, to ensure the wheels, levelers went in the same spots, as well as the PCB cage and power distribution in the same locations. also used some clamps and some wood hardener on some concerned bottom edging of the side panels. Before and After Next was the rear. I have a friend with an import Midway Galaga cab as well, and I used his rear door as a template to have an identical door made. This was down to every last measurement imaginable. This includes the 'rabbit' / tongue on the bottom of the door being routed the same as well. I also sanded the bottom rear section, primed them both and painted them as close a match as I could possibly get to the original cabinet. Whilst it isn't original, it came up mint and is at the rear where you won't see it anyway. I also put grilles in which were as close a match as possible to the original, and new locks. Before and afters Next was the PSU. I wanted to retain the original Midway linear PSU, but also have a spare switcher with wiring adapter ready should I change my mind. I rebuilt the PSU using a kit from Arcade Parts and Repair. Following this was the fluro light. I could have put a new fixture, or even LED - but again, I'd come this far keeping it true, so I found a new old stock ballast from the US to replace the one which was causing tubes to blow. After the below picture, I also put in a new starter. Now working spot on. A pic of the internals reinstalled onto the new floor. I also obtained an original plastic locking 'guide' which was missing for the PSU. You can also see the coin door lights working again - they were both just dead globes. Before and After The game PCB was repaired and now running great and here is a pic of how the cab came back together. I put new 'leather textured' T molding like original, and some cap bolts painted black to hide the lock bar holes. I also installed a new Midway kick plate, from MikesArcade, and done a few touch ups here and there. Far from perfect, but am very happy with the outcome overall.

  2. Wow. Long post. Anyway. Yes. Dangerous. And I don't believe I'm being ambiguous at all. My comment clearly refers to vaccine misinformation. Well. You really got me there. Nothing to do with a group mentality. All my opinion. I'm a big enough boy to not need others to tell me how to think. Everything I say, I own. I'll just post my responses to part of your post here as you take a few tangents. I'm very open to fact finding and discussions. I'm not open to people presenting false statements as fact. I spend a significant portion of my working life investigating, assessing data and filtering fact from fiction/interpretation. I'm also wrong often enough and will be the first to admit I've been proven wrong. I don't believe you've done that yet. I don't know everything. Far from it. And I firmly believe that the more you know the more you realise how much you don't know. But that doesn't mean i should just believe whatever is thrown out there. And you seem a bit confused about the right to free speech. I do support it. You certainly have it and use it regularly. But I also have the right to exercise free speech when I see posts that are questionable or completely false. That doesn't mean that I have an aversion to free speech, although it is a convenient response to use. I don't even remotely care what opinions you post about politics, religion, crooks, Australia day, Australia Post, Banks, etc... Type your heart out (preferably in the conspiracy theory thread or another razersedge theories thread rather than constantly trying to derail a thread about Covid). You may be correct about some of it. But when you post up unsubstantiated statements about negative vaccine results being hidden or other medical conspiracies you believe without any actual substantiation of facts. That may cause harm to someone and I believe it needs a response. Because at that point you're in there with anti-vaxxers. The simple fact is I don't find you to be very credible. And statements like this are why. You use fear mongering as a tool. This isn't fact based. You could have presented these statements as questions. "Do you believe that vaccines are causing bad reactions and that these cases are being kept quiet?" Then it's a discussion about the potential for this happening rather than a unsubstantiated statement being presented as fact. The real irony is that you call out your own behaviour as dangerous. It's dangerous whether it's an individual or a group. I'm sure you will respond again with any number of reasons to justify why I don't agree with you (Ignorant, lazy, not open to the truth, aversion to free speech, cancel culture, Think he knows it all, group mentality, insert whatever other reasons here). None of it is accurate but if it makes you feel better about why I don't agree with you then go for it. Maybe if you didn't include the unsubstantiated statements as fact then more people might want to engage in discussion with you.

  6. The other day, my friends and I went to a strip club. One of my friends wanted to impress the rest of us, so he pulled out a $10 bill. When the dancer came over to us, my friend licked the $10 bill and stuck it to her butt cheek! Not to be outdone, another friend pulled out a $20 bill. He called the girl back over, licked the $20 bill, and stuck it to her other butt cheek. In another attempt to impress the rest of us, my third friend pulled out a $50 bill and called the girl over. I was worried about the way things were going, but he licked the bill and just stuck it to one of her butt cheeks again. My relief was short lived. Seeing the way things were going, the girl gyrated over to me! Now everyone's attention was focused on me, and the girl was egging me on to try and top the $50. My brain was churning as I reached for my wallet. What could I do? I got out my ATM card, swiped it down the crack of her arse, grabbed the 80 bucks and went home.

  7. Hey guys, Organising what will be the first of hopefully many Brisbane SHMUP meets. Time: Saturday 13th February, kick off around 5ish in the afternoon. Location: Holland Park, Brisbane. I will PM my address to attendees. Details: 8 candy cabs with a SHMUP on each cab. Some will be PCBs, some will be GroovyMAME. I will finalise a games list by next week. SHMUPS will be a mix of Japanese style and American style and also horizontal and vertical. There will also be an Atari Tempest cabinet, Donkey Kong cabinet and a Point Blank cabinet for other arcade goodness in between SHMUPS. There are some pins to play as well, but obviously won't be the main focus of the meet. Comp format: the plan currently is as follows. For the first hour or so (while we wait for everyone to arrive) cabs will be available for practice games. After that, everyone will play each of the 8 games to set a score which will be recorded in Matchplay software. After all the scores have been entered, a victor will be crowned. What's the prize you ask? Well, that's up to attendees. We could do a $10 entry fee and winner takes all. Or we could just make it a friendly comp with the victor gaining the eternal respect of their peers :D Please add your name to the thread if you would like to attend. I reckon we need 10 people for a good meet. EDIT: Just to note. While all of my cabs function fine and look good, they are not fancy pants collector cabs. Some have average sticks and buttons etc. Just don't expect Japanese collector quality :D

  8. In an effort to get back on topic . My Covid plan has been occasionally buying stocks on the ASX. Seeing interest rates are so low there is very little return on banked money so growth in share price and dividends is a way of working the dollars .Looking at what companies will favour in regards to the vaccine rollout. The pinball market is saturated with overpriced machines so I see no value in putting money into this hobby anymore.

  12. Interesting observation of “fear and greed because as Covid swept through there was a considerable amount of fear, then the greed of panic buying, society stockpiling food and toilet paper causing more harm anxiety and confict. Recently observed panic buying in WA and only in lockdown for a week. Looking back at how bloody ridiculous people react & fighting over a roll of dunny paper.

  17. I managed to find one a few years ago luckily for a game that had one completely cracked but these days you got no hope. I did look into making some steel ones and I have the design but the cost was not feasible for a one off. Maybe it's time to revisit this as there are three current threads going where members are looking for these. https://www.aussiearcade.com/forum/trading-forum/for-sale/for-sale-pinball-open-for-posting/88594-eoi-data-east-standard-dmd-speaker-panels

  20. I think sellers remorse hits most people. Selling always sounds good at the time, especially if it's to fund a new and exciting machine. The problem is that we miss what we're used to........and if it's been in the collection a while, then we notice the absence. I sold my BSD (wasn't in great condition, but I loved it), and have missed it ever since. I go out of my way to play at mates places that have that machine just to satisfy the nostalgic itch. Would I ever own one again? Never say never, but with limited space, and so many other machines to enjoy, I highly doubt I will.

Not cheap compared to Bill prices, but was very easy & impressively packed. If u still need help & dont have his number, pm me

  26. Just proves to not believe everything you read, especially if you have no sense for sarcasm. It was a "pisstake" (see what I did there lol) at some sort of simplistic or troll posting, my response was to a shallow or pisstake type post that contained a suggestive question, something about me drinking. ... I actually hardly drink at all, anybody whom actually knows me. So many ignoring and hating at anyone they don't understand, or disagree with. That's severely limiting to learning anymore. I don't hate anyone just because they have some other beliefs or learned different things. Really. Answers often come from other people, and I am looking for some. If you are not, that is fine mate. You do you, it's your choice. Good for you man! :)

  28. WE'RE BACK!!! Monday 8th February we are formally returning into our 2021 season. IMPORTANT UPDATES/CHANGES ... We will be starting 1/2hr earlier in 2021 Check-in will be open from 5:30pm, game time will start at 6pm. We will have a transition period for people to get used to this change so for February we'll be aiming for a 6:15pm start and then 6pm in March. With the matchplay rounds format, we can add players in to subsequent rounds. HANDICAP System, will be changing ... For the duration of 2021 non-ifpa sanctioning your Australian IFPA ranking will no longer come into play - instead we will be starting with a clean slate of no handicap, then, for each month those who end up in the top 3 will have a cumulative 10% handicap applied. By cumulative ... if you end up coming in the top 3, 3 months in a row, that equates to a 30% handicap (going into the fourth month) please PM if this doesn't make sense. The handicap does dissipate if you do not make the top 3. Finally - courtesy of Autographed Memorabilia and AMD, we will be giving away this professionally framed flyer set of "Iron Maiden" at the February meet, hope to see you there!

  36. With cheap tools, such as Ozito listed above, I find its basically a roll of the dice - sometimes you can get a very reliable thing that lasts an extremely long time, other times its broken within a month. At least with a more expensive brand name such as Ryobi or Makita you know it will last the distance. A lot of the time though, if its a basic tool or something that's not going to be used quite often I normally go the cheap Ozito route.
    1 point
  37. how long is the warranty? think ozito is still 5 years. used to work part time in the tool section at bunnings. ozito saws are okay for diy. the blade doesn't cut as precise as ryobi etc but they are bang for your buck. if you planned to use the saw more often would buy ryobi. that's all I have used for the past 10 years.

  39. I'm sure I'm in good company, but I'm an Arcade tragic as well! Have for many years being going to build a cabinet for the man cave. After starting to clean out the garage i resized i actually had most of what I needed so i pulled the trigger. I bought a joystick/button kit and dusted off an old Pandora's box 4 that a mate gave me. Luckily I'm a designer and have access to a laser cutter big enough for 9mm MDF. Basically for the first build I wanted a wall mounted cabinet that can be a bar top as well. Anyway this happened: I have a full set of build photo's if anyone is interested. Pretty much full custom almost everything. Lasercut MDF and Masonite cabinet, Spray can and Hand Brushed paint job, Custom Control panel graphics, Custom Lighting, (colour change coming) 3d printed knobs and speaker grills.......... I know! Planning a cocktail MAME cabinet next... Probably gunna need some help with that one. Already started on trying to get the PC and Software sorted..... My brain hurts! Cheers

  43. Hi folks, Just thought I'd share my early Christmas present. I have had Kee Games Super Bug in for restoration for a while but finally have all bits back a put it together for a quick test. From boards, power supply and monitor in all sorts of problems - life has been restored. I will post a few more pics once I am happy with gameplay. Once that is 100% I'll start or the cabinet but happy days ahead.
