Pinball decals

Shock_And_Awe

Question

Hi, I have a TZ with fading on one side and some scuff marks on other places. I can get a new 5 sticker set from Bumper Auctions for $400 but they say it is a huge job. They reckon you need a heat gun to take the old off and to put the new one on.

Savage was saying that it took him ages and then said he should have just put it over the top of the old. I asked Bumper Auctions about this and they said not to do this because it will likely lift.

Has any one replaced pinball decals and can share their experience?

Is it just too hard to bother about?

Thanks guys.

I have never one this, but I thought you'd be able to put it over the top.

Could you use a decent sander or a plane to get the old stuff off? Rather than a heat gun?

I'd google some sites and see if anyone has some good guides, rather than finding out you've done it wrong and it's too late.

I have a little info about a Black Knight I applied decals to on my site - here -

http://home.kooee.com.au/brainsnap/blackknight2.html

My experience was fine BUT very nerve wracking, you only get one shot at it otherwise your new decals are gooooooooooooooooooone.

I ONLY applied new decals , I did NOT have to go through the drama of removing old decals.

For the end result that is achieved I HIGHLY recommend doing it.

Take your time though, I took a whole day to apply the decals.

Bump

Thought I would bump this thread as it is going to apply to my next project. A question for Wotto.

Checked out your web page and found some great info! Especially since I am about to restore a Firepower. I was going to repaint first but will go the decals instead. Your Black Knight looks fantastic! What type of vinyl and thickness do you get it printed on?

What type of paint to match the inside of cab/backbox to the decal? I think I read in another thread Satin black is good. Any particular brand ?

question for Shock'n'Awe

Have you applied new decals to your TZ yet?

Thank's

no I haven't done it. I got a file off a pinball artwork site for the TZ decals and took to a printer and he said $250 for all 5 decals but still my current decals are not soo bad and considering whether or not it's worth the bother.

As for paint for the headbox I have used White Knight Satin Black spray paint on a number of pinnies and it looks great. I first tried matt, then gloss and both looked shit but satin was the trick

Thanks Mate will try the Satin Black..

I need to get the Firepower Decals printed. Found some on a pinball site they were $179.00 US which would end up around $250.00 + inc shipping.

Haven't tried anyone locally yet to get them printed still trying to work out the best material to get them printed on. I think from Wotto's site he said matt black vinyl adhesive. Still don't know the thickness?

Ok- heres a complex answer or two for you - easy bits first.....

I am told that the vinyl is the SAME at ALL print shops - it is Metamark Digital Print Vinyl and is apparently "the " industry standard.

Now .....you can get it done in

a) Matt

b) Gloss

c) Gloss over Laminate

d) Matt over Laminate

confused yet.....................well I havent even started!

My father in laws Firepower was done in Matt Vinyl and the Black , Red and Yellow look GREAT - there is no visible "dotting" in the print at all, it was done about 2 years ago.

However I recently had my Time Warp cabinet decals printed in Matt at the SAME printers and it has come out quite OK but "dotting" is visible in the blue if viewed within close range - so I am a little confused as to how the FP came out so bloody good but the TW so average ( Ihad them re-do TW a 2nd time just to make sure and the same result occured) - so either they changed thier printers or the blue on TW doesnt print too well onto the Matt vinyl? I also printed the TW decals on a big plotter at our work BEFORE I took it to the commercial printers and it was crisp with NO dotting in the print , so I am assuming it was thier printer??

The Black Knight was done with decals I purchased years ago from ( now closed ) Arcade Grafix in the USA - they are GLOSS decals and also look BLOODY good ( if not original ).

I would suggest getting some small sample prints done before hand in the different finishes so you can see the end result- any printer should do that for you.

BTW- go here to get your decals- these are the images we had my father in laws Firepower printed from - http://www.cheeselounge.co.uk/

Hope this helps:unsure

Yes thanks heaps. Will have to do a bit of shopping around.

Checked out the FirePower you did and it looks great!

Did you have trouble get the edges flush, any tricks here?

Will the satin black spray paint match the matt black vinyl decal as S'n'A mentioned?

Thanks again Wotto.

and did you get the FirePower apron done in the end?

I used White Knight satin black for both my BSD and JM. See http://www.users.on.net/~david.marian/pinball/, navigate down through each machine to get to the shop job photos.

Cheers thanks they look great! Satin Black it is..

Might take your advice on the metal braiding inside the cab too. Can you buy that from Electrical stores locally?

Nice collection as well..

Thanks for the nice comments. 3 of the machines have gone to make way for POTC hopefully.

It's only fair to warn you that once you start on a cab, you have to do everything. There's no putting shitty tarnished screws back in - they have to be polished. You'll want to wash down the harness (I just use a damp Chux) and wash all the P clips too.

I've never seen the braid available locally - I ordered mine directly from Halted Specialties, although next time I'd get it from Scot Bogart at PinRestore.

Great work on your BSD there Dialogpimp. I spent some time checking out your BSD restore pics some time ago when I was restoring mine. I got onto your site from the owners list links. Mine was in a lot better nick than yours to start with but I reckon yours came out looking the better at the end.

Where'd you get the playfield decals from?

I'm sure it must've been a difficult decision to sell your BSD after all the hard work.

The decals were a scan and came from someone in the US who I can't remember. He had a NOS playfield. I then changed the colours etc until it matched when printed on the decal paper. Without a calibrated monitor and printer it was a total nightmare. LMK if you want more info.

Actually BSD wasn't hard to sell at all, in the sense that I didn't have any difficulty letting it go. I took a heavy financial loss on it, but I don't do this to make money. The actual game shits me to tears with it being so drainy - I could never get into it no matter how hard I tried. The new owner loves it and the current HS is around 1.1 billion I think.

Just goes to show how it's different strokes for different folks - my next project will prolly be a JD :redface

Thanks anyway but don't really need decals that badly....just a slight bit of damage in the shooter lane where the ball drops down but no where near as bad as what was originally on yours.

As for the game, I love it! I love the sounds, the animation, the smooth ramp shots, in fact the only thing I find a bit annoying is the video mode is just easy and boring for the first 3 or so stages. Apart from that it's an awesome game. I have found however that it can be a love / hate game as some of my mates just love it too but there has been some that say it's not for them.

As for scores I just thought I'd take the opportunity (it's the only game I've ever got a good score on!) for a quick brag because my HS is 2.5 billion. I've also killed Dracula maybe 4 or 5 times all up.....man is that a great experience!!
