Possible PCB Repair/Exchange service.

Prof

Question

OK, just testing the water here.

I've do pcb repairs (remember, this is a HOBBY, not a source of income, so I only do repairs when time allows) and like to help out fellow aussie collectors.

I've been exploring the possibility of a repair and/or exchange service. As a non-working pcb can have any number of faults, from 1 broken trace to every chip fried and I have seen this. Each pcb needs to be accessed seperately.

But, as for costing, I would have to work it out. Probably end up working on a fixed price + parts. So if a pcb need 1 common chip replaced or is an easy fix, I would only charge the fixed price. But the problem lays in the fact a lot of the cpus, ram and custom chips haven't been made for long time and the only source is to rob another pcb, the cost would reflect this.

I really need to work out the fine details first, but I would say I might be able to commence after x-mas (if real life doesn't get in the way)

Anyhow, comments and thoughts are welcome.

Cheers

OK, I've been collecting arcade games since 1992, been repairing them shortly after :rolleyes as you do when they die.

What I'm trying to gauge is the demand for repairs. I don't want to go and outlay a lot of dollars on a few high end pieces of equipment (50mhz dualtrace storage scope, a fluke and a few pods, comparator, etc) only to find it will take a lifetime for them to pay for themselves.

My biggest problem is the fact that real life gets in the way and I only get a meager time to work on anything so turnaround would be slowww...:x

I would like to be able to have a good selection of pcbs in stock to try and eliminate this. This would be after I had sighted the doa pcb and it was accessed to do a swap.

Thoughts...

Heya Prof

sounds interesting.

However as Trav said we need more info. What era of games will you be doing, where are you located?

I have a flakey ghost muncher/uniwars as well as a flakey CPSIII MPU I would be interested in getting repaired.

Looking forward to hearing more

I suppose I should go to the right forum to fillin the blanks, but I am located 40 mins west from the Gold Coast at Canungra. I wouldn't be thinking of taken anything in till after x-mas so I can clear a huge backlog. Managed to get a few done tonight.....really need to get the network out to the shed :rolleyes oneday..
