What is the Attraction to Pinball and What Make a Good Pinni?

Hi,

I am going to sound like an arrogant little sh!t, but for years i have never really had the urge to play pinball machines. I used to play them when i was little but now it seems like the charm has worn off.

I would consider getting one, but only for the right price. So, i want to know what you guys think the attraction to pinni's is for YOU.

Is it the shiny lights?, All that rubber and metal:evil ? , Or an obsession with tiny steel balls?

What are the best pinni's and why?

I think the fact you are not in total control of the gameplay is the main thing. An element of skill and a shitload of good luck makes for a good score. As oposed to a video game when each time you start a game you know exactly what is going to happen on each level (older games anyway as I have not played many newer ones) So it does have that challenge of not knowing whats coming next.Who knows where those bumpers and slings are gonna put your ball.

You might think your kingshit of your machine but sometimes it whips your ass,but if your good at a video game you usually always do well.

Apart from the gamplay nice artwork attracts me and lots of different modes. My favourite 3 machines which I also own are Twilight Zone,Judge Dredd and Tales from the Crypt. They look awesome when they are on,very detailed, great lighting with nice ramps and extras and are also very challenging.

Getting rough with them occasionally is also a bonus helping the ball go where you want but not so much it tilts.Try giving galaga a nudge while your playing see if it helps. Not that I dont like video games cause I would love to add a couple of older classics to my pinny collection.Just my thoughts.:)

It's a personal thing hey !

Ok , for me, I like to own machines that I played as a kid, I enjoy the memories they bring me just by having them around the house. I remember one of my favourite "haunts" had a Gorgar and Time Warp and Flash lined up alongside each other and we would spend hours/ full days in there on them- now I have that same set up in my house.

Gameplay is also fun and as Bretty said you dont always know whats coming next and sometimes the machine will thrash you!!

The artwork on the PF's and BG's is a definite attraction for me, so much detail in some it is incredible.

I have owned newer pins ( Indy etc ) enjoyed them for a while but I prefer the older machines even if they dont have as much to shoot for.

A theme which traps you. Preferably an unlicensed theme so they I dont have to associate with reality eg: BK2000, WH20 or a scifi theme eg TZ, STTNG. As for the playfield, a game with long loops and ramps.. No shot stabby shots and a game where a shot made to a ramp or a hole is rewarded 100%. The best game that I can think of for this is AF. I have never ever played any AF where a shot to the EB(Thing) or Bookcase as ever bounced out. Also the ramp is nice and wide. I also like wireform ramps that are quite complicated eg: T2 right ramp and the lock 'tube' on fish tales. As for the lights I am only a fan of LEDS in old games as the new ones tend to be a bit blinding.

It helps is the game has a bit of humour and the DMD needs to take its time when informing you of what you have hit and what to go for.

Thought I would see what was one of the oldest threads in this section, hence my reply..:unsure

This.

* Some older pins have the same amount of shots, or more, than any pin. Seawitch for example, has shots that cover the entire playfield including backhanders

For me it is the fun I have playing it. It may not be an A list title but if I enjoy playing it, it is fun for me, then it's cool.

I never played pinball as a kid as each time I did my game was over before I knew it, and I could get more play time for my coin.

Later in life I bought a pin and loved it. Due to my video gaming days, I enjoy DMD's over SS and EM's.

Yeah but it's a real good question, surprised after all these years, there is only 7 responses:huh:.

Pinball, to me anyways, is a bloody big subject. Still have not got my head around it. I guess that's another reason why I dig it so much.
