Dead monitor on NBA Jam cab ~ Help required

Mickey Juice

Question

Hey all!

I just moved house on the weekend, and alas after putting NBA Jam inside the house I've got a problem with it. :(

I switched it on Sunday arvo after putting the CP back on (couldn't get it through the door with it on) and it fired up Ok, the only questionable thing was that there was a wobble in the screen, kinda like a degaussing wobble (not that extreme) and it quitened down and wasn't noticible.

I turned the machine off for a few hours, then when I went to show a mate I turned it on and nothing  There was a thunderstorm around the area, but I doubt that would have affected it.

The game board is running fine, the LEDs are on and I can hear the gameplay sounds.

There is no glow from the back of the tube.. I tested the 2 fuses (6A and 2.5A) on the chassis board and they seem ok (I dont have a continuity test on my multimeter, so I just used resistence, and the meter was zeroing ok, so I assumed there was connection through it).

Any tips of where to go from here? The monitor is a dual res. I'm not sure of the brand, but I bought it from Troy (Gatherer000) and he knows the makeup of the internals better than anyone.

Thanks

After having this sit in a TV repair place... and having them not even TOUCH it, i've now got the cab back...

Just wondering if anyone has a schematic for an Eygo monitor... or know where to get one. Not sure exactly of the model.

I'm gunna pull out the chassis and have a look at it in my own time... and if i do take it somewhere, having the schematic will help.

I pulled out the monitor chassis last night and had a look.

The only bad solder joint I could find was on the monitor neck board... It was the pin that connects to the wire harness around the monitor.

I havnt plugged it all back in yet, but would be part of the problem???

I wouldnt dream of giving you monitor advice perhaps some guys can help you out but one of those big resitors near the fuses looks rather toasty. I know for a fact that would stop it going as A wire broke on my new 20" cab I got from Gav on the trip down. Re soldered it and she fired right up.

Perhaps check the value of the resitor and test it and the components surrounding it.

EDIT: what sort of Chassis is that mate? I have a Glendale chassis that looks the same as that you can have. I pulled it out of old red it works fine. was the monitor that was stuffed.

I'm gunna do cap kit, but I still suspect the transistors... but im not 100% up to scratch with testing them (still in circuit too). I'll have to do some more reading.

Also I think that toasty look around that resistor is actually dirt.

I've got this working thanks to Jomac.. but there's still no glow from the monitor neck :unsure

I can hear the whine of the flyback, and there's static around the anode cap.. but that's it :cry

i dont get it, so is your monitor working now or still broke?

Sorry I'll elaborate. I got the chassis back yesterday and I tested... There's a bit more life in the chassis ie it's got power but it's still not working 100%.

Im just waiting on Joey to get back to me.

Joey's the man, he really knows his stuff. I've had a number of dealings with him and can't recommend him enough.

Yeah he seems pretty cool. Interesting how he thinks capkits are a scattergun approach to fixing monitors.

Just got a reply then. Gotta test the CRT, and see if there's any pin or heater damage.

I don`t think replacing caps can be disgarded so easly.... But most of the time it is the semi's particulay expensive FETs !! Some can be $15 each!

If you are getting into doing alot of chassis repaires.. make sure you get (or borrow) a variac... You can slowly ramp up the volatage... with out just putting full load and blowing up other compoinets!

You can genraly hear if it doesn`t sound right when turning up the voltage.

Most of the time when testing FETs... It will be the last one you test! Also be carefull of the ones with built in diodes... they can throw you off the track when trying to figure out which one is faulty. Having a new fet of the same type and comparing your results.. can make things easyer!

I rember having a fet that tested fine.. but when compairing it to a new one... it was only slightly diffrent.. But enought to stop the chassis working properly!

When re-capping a chassis.. few things to look for:-

Don`t rely on the "silk screen" printing on the PCB to correctly show the polirity! ( All the chassis i have worked on have had errors) So check and double chek before removing them.

Use 105 deg or 125 Deg caps!

This one isn`t major.. But i always try to use the next voltage rating up. Espicaly since most caps are heaps smaller then a few years ago.

I don`t claim to know everthing about chassis... But i have definaly fixed a few!

There are 4 on e-bay at the moment if anyone is interested... But i have had bad dealings with the seller..So be carfull (Also JP is bidding on them as well).

Mrv.

Hi Guys it's Jomac ,

Just to follow up , when Mickey got his monitor back from repair there was no heater , it turned out to be a wire between the chassis and neck board had broken off .

It's up and running sweet and no tube damage.
