could anybody tell me if I could successfully run a gottlieb em on this if it only has a 115v transformer at the moment with a step down. considering the voltage outputs are almost exactly the same. 24v 25v and both 6.3v. or is the score motor an issue ?

So you have 240V into your gottlieb and it steps down to 115V to which then goes to the transformer in it. Is that how your set up is?

Depends

The 24V might not have enough guts to run the solenoids nicely, probably have to try it to find out.

Yep thats exactly the set up. I have a few machines with 115v only transformers which I run through a 2000watt step down. The issue is they run weak compared to my other games that run on 240v transformers. Are the motors in the 115v only games able to run on 240v if I was to put a duel voltage transformer into them . If so I will buy this and try it.

If so I will buy this and try it.

Everything in the machine this came out of is 24VAC after the transformer. 240VAC does go past the primary of the transformer.

Which machine do you have? Have you got the schematics? I'm an electronics tech, I can look into it.

i have a Bowling queen , Bank a ball , Top card and Ship ahoy all gottlieb games 2 of them are mid 60s the other 2 mid 70s

 

Sorry for late reply. Someone resigned at work so I've been very busy with extra work. The only schematic I could find was for Top card and it was for sale. A partial photo of it was listed and I could see the transformer (how lucky) It uses 6V and 25V. I really don't see why this transformer wouldn't work in your machines. They were fairly standard back then.

Did you scrape the Moon Flight? I'm on the look out for back-up spare parts for mine.

There was a lot of damage to the wiring to the point touching it would break the wires. A lot of the parts are still good but the contacts need cleaning or better still replacing.

I have it back up and running using an arduino mega.

I still have all these parts.

I just need to confirm with someone that the motors in the 115v only transformer pins will be ok on 220v.

Just be aware while input voltage is important, so is the Hz. A "US only" made pinball may have a 110 volt only transformer, it is also a 60 Hz only transformer as are the motors the machine may have inside that are mains powered.

The reason you can have a pinball with 110 or 240 volt input voltage selectable, ( export pinballs), is because those transformers are made to suit 55Hz not 50Hz like a 240 volt only transformer would be or 60Hz like a 110 volt only transformer is.

The 55Hz is close enough to suit both frequencies, a 50Hz transformer running on 60Hz and the reverse is asking for trouble.

 

I saw this first hand in some bowling centers using US equipment, (110 volt 60Hz), with 240-110 50 Hz stepdown transformers supplying the 110 volt. The equipment, mainly motors, ran extremely hot until it did start to smoke.

 

I imagine your US pinballs with the 110volt transformers running on 50Hz would also be running rather hot. I would imagine the output voltages would not be quite as they are supposed to be and that would explain your weaker than expected coils.

 

For short periods of time, being a transformer being fed the wrong Hz probably won't hurt but I wouldn't expect the transformer to be a 100% duty cycle unit as intended any longer while the frequency miss match is happening.

 

You could use a frequency converter as well as the step down so this isn't an issue or get the transformer rewound to suit local requirements. Probably cheaper having your transformers rewound rather than buying a stepdown and a frequency converter and it is the proper way of addressing your problem.
