Should we have a sticky to help take upright photos?

Recommended Posts

Been noticing a lot of sideways photos being taken on AA lately. Should we have a (locked?) sticky in the Forum Info section with instructions on how to take upright photos with different devices :unsure?

I can start off with iphone instructions. For other devices, other users can add to this thread and maybe mods can copy to the sticky :unsure?

How to take Upright Pics with an iPhone:

Correct way:

Wrong way:

A bit of background for those that didn't know:

Digital cameras (mainly phones) nowadays are using a file format called EXIF (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exif), where the file stores metadata in it with a whole heap of information about the photo taken. One of the pieces of information is a number which tells the photo viewing s/ware in which direction to show the photo (upright, upside down, sideways left to right and sideways right to left) because most cameras (in phones etc) can be taken by holding the camera in different ways.

The issue is that not all software reads the exif data and ignores the number telling it which way to show it.

With the iphone, back in (I think ios5), they introduced taking photos with the phone sideways, and the volume buttons pointing up. You could use the volume buttons as a normal cameras shutter button to take the photo. This was great... if you owned a mac... because it felt natural taking photos on a phone like a conventional camera then view it on your mac... because the mac read the exif data. But the problem was though, that the iphone when turned on it's side and volume buttons facing up (or home button pointing left), was the Camera's upside down position (it was the equivalent of holding a conventional camera upside down and taking a picture*).

The same thing is happening on AA. People are taking vertical pictures** (home button pointing down on an iphone), which is the iphones sideways position* and AA is ignoring the exif data and showing it as it was taken... sideways!* Until the exif format becomes a standard, or all software reads exif data, this will keep happening :rolleyes.

* If EXIF wasn't around

** don't get me started on vertical photos (and video). Here's a great P.S.A.:

Should we have a sticky to help take upright photos?

I asked about this again in Glenn’s pinball for sale thread (where pics were a mix of sideways and inside down). Just trying to understand the specific aa / iPhone interaction occurring.

Just Posting a few test pics here via Tapatalk from an iPhone

Finger points towards the edge where the home button is located.

Ahh so it’s the direct uploads via web interface that is happening with.

My guess is that the exif data on the image is correct, but the image itself isn't rotated.

Most image viewers these days will rotate an image properly, but it seems the resizing coffee that AA uses doesn't read the exif tags.

That's from an Android Nokia 8. AA completely ignores the rotation data stored in the images.

This is fine for a mobile phone but I use a Nikon DSLR and every Vertical image posted is screwed up on AA. It doesn't happen on a 4X4 forum I use or Gumtree or eBay, So it must have something to do with AA's set-up.
Off the top of my head on Linux:

sudo apt install jhead

jhead -autorot (filename)

Don't get me started on videos.

Ahhh!! :hairpull: You just gave me flashbacks. When I used to have arguments with people on the apple forum when apple started advertising back in the day to take photos with the volume button on top (causing upside down picks), people would counter my argument with EXIF, EXIF, EXIF. But I'd counter their EXIF argument with "But what about upside down videos?... EXIF is NOT for videos. It's only for pics." :097:

Notice how apple don't advertise taking pics with the volume button anymore!?!? ;)
