Dedpin : 46" 46" 2 screen pincab build : an ongoing saga

Recommended Posts

While I have so many other projects on the go, why not another one.

I have had a temporary setup going for a while now , so it was time to start building the cab.

Heres some of what has been done over the last couple of weeks.

Knocked together a cab

Debezelled 2 x 46" LCD screens

Fit screens into the cab

Measured up for the back box, then assembled one

Tested everything for fit and did some table beta testing

Cut and fit some of the backbox trim, to suit the newer style of BG locking

Enjoyed a few games on the huge BG

Thats it so far

If you like, you can check out the complete build process here http://www.vpforums.org/index.php?showtopic=14823&st=0

UPDATE

(full build copied over from VPF)

I finally made a start on the cab build.

I already had the computer built and everything set up and working for months now.

Time to put it in a cab.

i7 3.06 ghz

x58A UD 3R mother board

2 x GTS250 (16x/16x)

4gb Ram

700w PSU

500 gb hdd

All thrown together in a half case

.......................................................................

the initial testing on a 42" Sharp Aquos looked amazing

.......................................................................

Scored some ply from the last job I worked at and it just happened to be the right lengths.

I measured up Judge Dredd and cut the sides and measured the screen for the width.

Still debating whether to rout slots in the sides to house the screen, but for now I left it wider and installed

temporary guides to sit the 46 on to gauge the height and position.

............................................................................................

Got the screen heights measured up. Works out that the backbox height will be near identical to Guns N Roses

Did some rough measuring and there should be enough height to have a drawer tray out the back, under the vertical screen.

Also a full sized backbox glass with lift channel and painted surround to hide the bezel.

With a little bit of modifying, the lockdown bar locking mechanism can be made to fit so that the bar covers the whole bezel. Huge side edge bezel of 35mm.

............................................................................................

Decided to go with the old school look. Tried the back box from Gottlieb Spirit of 76, few mods and it will be fine. I will be making it from scratch, that head box has a home.

...........................................................................................

Started some wiring from stuff I have laying around.

I'm using a line filter IEC socket that I had in a driving game power supply hack as my 240v feed. Wired it to go to the 1st power socket for the computer to plug into. Also using a 240v plug to 2 x IEC plug splitter cable for the 2 LCDs.

Made up some power switching units using relay and din rail components as well.

..............................................................................................

I found this cool motorized USB hub. Don't know if I will put in in the front or underneath at the side. Either way, it will make life easier.

The software allows you to adjust the backglass picture to suit the size of the monitor

Brad

Yes, I read through the VP forum and had a browse through the other stuff - WAAY too complicated for this L'il Black Duck - I'll wait for the Chinese "60in1" VP Pin board to come out :)

very neat - how did you configure the backglass monitor to ONLY use the top half of the screen??

Hyperpin allows for rotating the BG, some use nvidia to rotate but I let the HP software do it.

I also changed the height in the setting ini so that the BG is more square and not so long. Reduced it to something like1280 x 720 or something around that.

Also , you have to change FP in the registry to rotate 90 deg if using the software to rotate.

@ Foot, I had this planned for a while, but one of the other boys is building one similar now as well.

Does the rotate and resize options in hp also work when using uvp active backglasses? I ask because after seeing this setup im thinking of going down the same path. Looks awesome.

Using the UVP in VP follows whatever you you change in HP.

Whatever the Static HP BG looks like, VP's UVP will look the same. As long as you have all the HP / UVP directories set up, VP will launch the BG even without using the HP frontend.

That said, then there is the matter of the pinmame window, I forget whether or not it has to be rotated or left the same.

I mainly wanted to set this cab up to run the old LED BG machines and keep them big and square, so most pinmame windows will be hidden anyway.

Here is with VP running

Yeah ive noticed when setting up uvp i just ran the table in vp and it showed the bg. Just wasnt sure if it took the rotated settings from hyperpin settings.ini or wether id have to manually change everytable to show the rotated and sized active bg. Ive got 102 vp tables all setup and running uvp active backglasses beautifully now so keen to get the screens organised and cab organised. I was going to go the ultrapin style with a 20" in back glass with a surround but after seeing your setup, that idea is going out the window. Will probably go 40-42" though.

Also can you tell me what windows resolution you are using for the backglass screen if thats ok?

You will have to go into regedit for FP and add a BGRotate entry and change it to 1 (rotates 90 deg) and of course resize any BG that you may have already set up.

Forgot to mention, still using a 1920 x 1080 res for the BG monitor.

Also, I couldnt get the B2S tables to display the BG properly. Still going to have a fiddle with it, but that will mean having to rotate using the nvidia card, not HP

Yeah just gave it a try on the screens i have here. Not using any FP tables only VP tables at the moment and just realised i would have to add a ROL=1 command to every table since ive just rotated and resized 102 dmd's for the 4:3 20" hahah.

So I think ill just go the nvidia rotate option as it means everything plays exactly the same without any changes to any tables. Cant wait to see your finished product dedrok. 46"'s are looking awesome. You reckon 42"'s will be ok? Seems to be about the size of a normal non wide body pinball?

Yeah 42 should be fine, I just wanted the 46 as its the same length when next to a real pin.

42 is the same width for widebody and most add an apron for instructions to fill the gap for length.

On the new lethal weapon i think i had to change to rol = 0.

Got about 250 + VP to go thru, but I might look at using the dmd mover program to do most of the sizing.

Maybe I might just rotate with the GPU also.

Will probably do a Judge Dredd replica cab and set up for the newer tables. Have 2 different style cabs, one day.

Dedrok. I went through every table and removed any rotation for the dmd's by changing the rol or ror to 0 as well. I used dmd align program to alt tab to the dmd for sizing and placement while actually playing through hyperpin. DMDALIGN is a godsend.

I hear you on that one brother. We should post other progs we have fond helpfull while makeing these things

another good app for creating the wheel list is hyperpin XML editor will find a link for it and post

Finally, i'm back up and running after the old desktop died. This new one plays all the problem tables fine now, but still not as powerful as the cab.

Thats what I had done hash, not rotated the dmd on the temp setup I was running, just dragged the dmd to 2nd screen.

I decided to change the setup now, to rotate the 2nd monitor with the GPU and not hyperpin.That way I dont have to change any pinmame rotation. One thing is that the window will show up stretched on some.

Just right click and select "restore window size", drag to the new position and resize.

I found that the dmd window looks best resized to Height = 67 (0000043), Width = 259 (0000103) running @ 1080x1920 res. Its hard to get them looking right.

Once I go thru and restore the stretched windows, I can then use DMD Mover to set all the dmds to that same size.

Here is the 2 different settings that I used to set up the square BG and not have it stretched

Hyperpin rotated monitor settings

Backglass_Image_x =1280

Backglass_Image_y = 0

Backglass_Image_w =1024

Backglass_Image_h =720

Backglass_Image_r =90

*********

GPU rotated monitor settings

Backglass_Image_x =0

Backglass_Image_y =0

Backglass_Image_w =1280

Backglass_Image_h =575

Backglass_Image_r =0
