Royal Flush 1976 Gottlieb

Picked this up today from Edy. I once owned the 2 player version Card Whiz, and allways missed it. This one is very much a project machine, hasnt worked for decades maybe, and somewhat neglected somewhere in France (container pin, bought in a few years ago). Looks to be complete, be it rusty in places, and alot of what's plastic on the playfield has been smashed. The PF is excellent, well hopefully still so after the mylar comes off. Quite alot of work in it for me, but its one of the best players of its era, so well worth my time and money to fix. The BG is okish, good enough for me anyway. Thinking about using 90's posts, and spraying some of the crome bits (rusty) with colored paint, then clear them. PBR sell everything I need for this one, but I dunno, maybe a bit of moderisation wont look bad at all. How would a purple apron look, with a red lockdown bar?

That should come up a treat. My Card Whiz is slowly coming together but I am up to the playfield stage and someone has removed the mylar and damaged the paint near the targets. Not sure how I am going to fix that but will see. Good luck with your resto.

Looks pretty good to start with. Will be interesting to see the reno progress, particularly the mylar removal. Looks like it's torn down near the eject hole and a few sunk inserts so has to be done I guess.

From what you can see of the mylar around the edges it looks like it is pretty thick and has shrunk over time, so hopefully it comes off cleanly.

I'll watch keenly as I have a Card Whiz that needs a lot of work.

Mylar removal done, and dusted  Heated the mylar with the hair-dryer, whilst the missus pulled gently (lol), and stopped every few inches to clean the glue away with euclyptus oil. Removed no paint at all, but discovered some loss where the mylar had worn through in places. Very happy with the results, and would definately remove mylar again (2nd time lucky Jeff ;) ). Will look great after a polish with novus, just have to pop up the insert between the flippers first, the rest are flat .The top third of the PF was never mylared, so it will get the magic eraser treatment.

One of my favourite EM machines. I have recently restored a 'Card Whiz' , all completed however the backglass is in poor condition. In your case the Shay Group have made a reproduction for your title. I did ask them about a reproduction 'Card Whiz' and was told they had no intentions of making one. I am planning on redrawing a reproduction myself, however this will take alot work and time. From the pictures of your machine, it looks to be in fairly good condition and will come up a treat. Looking forward to seeing the progress. Below is a link which outlines my recent restore.

Yeah, so many doom and gloom stories about mylar removal, but all you need is the missus, her hair dryer, and some euc. oil. I did get the playfield pretty hot though, maybe that is the trick. Will start on the rust removal tommorrow.

Greg those colours look bright as under the mylar great job , just a ? when you use magic eraser at the top of the playfield what will be on the eraser any chemicals . I used novis2 with eraser on my BOP and went a bit to far where there was no mylar had to touch it up ...

Some more progress, I have been dismantling the playfield, and fixing rusty metal as I go. Wire brush on the drill does the job, and other small bits sandpaper. You have to leave a little rust on the metal, so that the rust converter can do its job. Not going to re-chrome anything, instead I will spray the metal bits with a combo of red, and purple paint. As I pull this apart I start to wonder wether this should be a parts machine, the rust has really done a number on it, so many screws breaking-off inside the PF as I remove them, rusty plungers, light sockets etc. But with a very good PF, solid cab, fairly decent BG, ton of new parts available, and the fact I love the game, well it's going to be worth it in the end. Plus it's an enjoyable job

Got to agree it's worth saving. Maybe lineball as an economic proposition, but such a good looking machine and the important bits are in very presentable condition. It'll be worth it when you're finished - the value of satisfaction is limitless :)

Great pics too - thanks for posting them.

I've noticed that I've had to work a lot harder to get bring some parts back up to scratch on Duotron than I had to on Firepower. Maybe it was a different finish used by the two makers or just the extra almost decade of age.

I still love cleaning some bits and finding them gleaming like new, makes it worth while.

Keep at it EB!

  • 1 month later...

Started to paint the bits that had surface rust, decided the go custom colors on this, and think it will look good, certainly will be different anyway. I hope that clear-coat will protect the paint-work from the ball hitting into it, time will tell I guess. Coindoor clean-up with ranex quite well, and back of it I treated with ranex, and undercoated. The lockdown mechanism I just cleared over the undercoat. The chimebox looks good now, the rust treated, and a quick spray of hammertone. I used a spongy lino in the base of the chimes, I have used it before and it seems to take the bashing of the chime plungers really well.
