Spiderman tidy up

Recommended Posts

I don't normally bother with machines I have to restore or fix. I much prefer to buy machines that are in pretty good nick already (with one or two exceptions). I also am pretty time poor, so in order to get me off my arse and moving on one of my games, thought i'd start a thread on it!

This is my imported SM, came in via Korea. Sat in my garage for a good 6 mths, and only just recently made the move into the house..

I got pretty lucky on this one, other than broken plastics there isn't a lot wrong with it. The cab has zero scratches or marks on it, the only thing is the head box shiny moulding got a bit scuffed when the head box was down in transit, and the entire cab is slightly stained with cigarette smoke.

This machine is going to get a nice tidy up, I won't be going crazy, but I thought I'd document the process for anyone else wanting to give a machine a spruce up.

Parts I already had (received as part of the original SM deal):

- Plastics set (would cost you $170 roughly).

- Replacement sandman (not sure)

Parts currently ordered:

- Full super bright kit from cointaker - $200

- Cliffy target protector from RTBB - $25

- Cliffy left side right ramp protector RTBB - $25

- Orbit Plastic protector set RTBB - $26

- Buildings / Sandman / Train mod from Back Alley - $230

- New legs - $90

Need to source:

- Playfield glass (exploded in my wife's hands)

Will start stripping and cleaning tomorrow.

Ok, not going to wait for the LEDs. I'm also waiting on a couple of other parts but they'll get sorted later.

Parts:

Back Alley Mods

Plastics, red display, plastic protectors, cliffy protectors.

Sandman ... rarrrr!

Upon closer inspection the machine does have a few things wrong with it that need fixing, no more than any other container machine though:

Left sling post bent, and t-nut broken.

Often broken plastic between left orbit, and left ramp.

Broken plastic at entrance to Sandman.

Sandman missing

Ball guide missing

http://i1225.photobucket.com/albums/ee398/sleazius/spiderman%20tidy%20up/ball_guide.jpg

Right pop bumper, broken plastic and not working

http://i1225.photobucket.com/albums/ee398/sleazius/spiderman%20tidy%20up/right_pop.jpg

There are two main problems, where the ball guide is missing, there is a screw sheared off in one of the holes, I've sourced the missing plastic but not the angles that hold it on, so they'll need to be made. The other problem was the assembly under the pop was broken, the two screws that hold the coil to the bracket had been sheared off, additionally, one of the parts was bent to hold the whole thing together (probably by the op who owned it), part has been replaced, and its now working.

Couple of other things:

- There is a fair bit of flipper hum, mostly from the upper flipper, which will need to be sorted.

- Cab is nicotine stained (simple green for the win).

- Small patch of really strange wear at the entrance to one of the ramps (looks like someone has had a go at the playfield with something abrasive).

- Ramp flaps are showing light signs of rust. (new pieces ordered)

- Ball guide rubbers are smashed (the blue ones) will need to replace them but haven't been able to source them all.

Will be getting on with it today, hopefully have some updates by tonight.

With the meet this went on the total back burner, good news is I'll be kicking it off again tonight. I'll also kick it up a notch from what I originally stated as I'm going to flog the machine when I'm done.

Other parts to source:

- mirror blades

- shiny moulding

- ramps

- shaker

- also considering new rails

Just saw this thread. You need LEDs mate, of did they arrive? Let me know if you need a loan of some until they get here.
