The keys will be bigger than any regular phone keypad you've used so it's actually better for those of us with 'fat fingers'. For texting though you need to use it sideways as the buttons are much larger than if you use it vertically.

Several other members have good things to say about the HTC range of Android based phones so you may want to take a look at those also. I've not used one so cannot comment.

As for breaking it. If you are going to throw the phone around then don't get one. The screens on any of these touch phones are large pieces of glass and really won't stand up to being thrown around like you can with a keypad based phone. I've had mine for a year with both a screen protector and plastic cover on the back and it's been dropped a couple of times with no adverse result. Each time I was sure it was going to be stuffed in some way though but it's still fine.

i think i need an iphone

I think the word you are looking for is "want", not "need".

There are dozens of phones that do the same as an iPhone, and don't lock you in as bad as any of the iPhone contracts. Look at anything from HTC, Motorola, Samsung, LG, etc. Even a Blackberry. In particular, check out the phones that come with either Android or Windows Mobile. Android is young, but adoption is growing rapidly and its open source base means people can release whatever they want, and not be controlled by Apple's sometimes very strange restriction policy.

Also if you security and confidentiality is a concern, an iPhone will be on the bottom of your list. There are dozens of free tools out there that let you gain access to everything on an iPhone, even if it has a pin. A recent Ubuntu install will access everything on a "protected" iPhone 3GS without needing to enter a PIN, and when complete will leave no trace that data was copied.

From a usability point of view, I don't mind the iPhone. But it's getting to the point now where people want them because it's a trend, and not because it's the phone that best meets their requirements. Shop around and see what else is out there. You'll save money, and probably end up with a device that does more of what you want.

Apple win with the GUI, but htc walk over them with specs. As ELVIS says, go and try out a number of them and find what is good for you. Realise that battery consumption is 1 day approx, so can be a lot less than your current phone.

Boo

p.s I own a HTC HD2 and wish it had a better interface.

Yeah take a look at the HTC Desire. Its a serious piece of kit. Larger and better quality screen than the iphone. Faster processor blah blah blah. Plenty of vids/reviews on youtube for you to look at.

That said, apple are expected to announce the iphone 4g tomorrow. HTC already have the EVO4g to combat that but not sure when its coming out, although rumours are that the iphone 4g will only be as good as the Desire is now. Just rumours though mate.

If you need something tough, check out the HTC Legend which is milled from a single block of aluminium. Its dead sexy!

Its all about what you want, not what you need, as Elvis pointed out.

Yeah but the HD2 uses Windows 7 doesn't it? Have you seen the Sense UI on the Desire?

Nerds or geeks don't buy Iphones - they're not high spec enough :) Though if ease of use is #1 for you, they're not a bad option, but then you have to deal with all the regular Apple control-freak BS.

You can check email, browse the net, run a billion apps, etc on pretty much any modern phone these says... HTC seem to have the highest spec, most amazing phones these days. A friend of mine bought an HTC Touch HD2 and it's like something outta Star Trek. I'd love one, but I could never buy one though, as I drop my phone at least once a day onto hard surfaces. (ie, I'm clumsy and ham-fisted.)

So I guess it depends on your lifestyle too ? Just about any modern symbian platform phone (ie, all Nokias) will do all you need and you don't have to buy into the Apple slavery that they build into every single one of their products.

Just my $0.02 :)

Forget the Hero.

The Desire runs on Android and the HD2 runs Windows Mobile. Both run 1ghz Snapdragon processors. The HD2 has a MASSIVE screen so it may be too big if it is always in you pocket.

Up to you mate. Android or Windows?

How can you not know how to use an iPhone? :unsure

It only does one thing at a time, only one available button and you can't even change the battery on it. :lol

On topic.

Desire runs latest and greatest 2.1 Android and the Sense user interface on top of it makes it much easier to use apparently than plain Android - email setup, browsing, social networking etc. (FYI I have a Motorola Milestone/Droid with a hardware keypad running plain Android 2.1 and I had no problems with it).

Hero - currently on Android 1.6 - but due for an update to 2.1 sometime. hardware specs may be a bit low for best performance.

HD2 - massive screen - Windows mobile (not so great) - Sense UI (good) and quite customisable, with huge hacking community - see XDA Developers.

On the protection side - for all phones there are a variety of "invisible" skins for scratch protection without bulk, a variety of hard cases for impact and even ruggedised cases for military spec protection (otterbox) - so don't worry too much about damage.

iPhone "just works" because it is so locked down and one-stop shop for apps. However, if you don't like the keyboard or any other core feature - bad luck.

Windows mobile - better than it was - but a generation behind and not touch-optimised and apps not in one place.

Android - for porn - see here:

Main app store available, not quite as polished as iPhone - but getting there on both OS and apps. Quite open and due to get Flash soon.

I spent way too much time on Phone forums before I bought my Milestone. :rolleyes

I usually went for the flip or slide phones to keep the crap out of the keys and scratches off the screen, I have had an iphone now for around 8 months and i havent had any dramas with it yet.

I was worried about the screen when i got it but with a decent cover and a screen protector it really hasnt been an issue, and yeah i have dropped it over a dozen times.

my missus had to upgrade the other day cause her nokia died and testing all the other touch phone on the "live bar" out she went for the iphone because it was easier to use.

End of the day if you look after it you shouldn't have any problems with it, same as any of the other touch phones.

But if your really hard on mobiles id just stick to the 99 dollar prepaid brick and swap the sim over and save on some :cry later on down the track or get some decent portable device insurance..

I know it's sooo mainstream to like an iPhone, and as someone who uses a linux system as much as any other OS, I should try and keep my geek cred and recommend something else..... but, meh, I love my iPhone and have never had such a positive user experience with a mobile phone. I'd give a HTC a try but I can't really see the point when this is the first phone I haven't wanted to throw in the bin after 6 months and the only thing I genuinely miss is Flash. :unsure

Same as any screen protector for any phone, PDA, MP4 player etc. It's a thin plastic film that you stick to the screen. They only cost a couple of bucks and are a good insurance policy for any device with this sort of screen. You can get different types (reflective, tinted etc.) but they all do the same thing.

A few of you guys have mentioned a "screen protector" for the iphone, what exactly is this?

I regret taking mine off. Got a number of scratches on mine now. Hard to find the right one - there are some pretty crappy ones, give the reflective and anti-glare ones a miss.

Yeah, as they were cheap I got half a dozen different ones from DX. the tinted ones were no good and I mucked up a couple putting them on crooked so having a few was a good move. Anyway the plain old clear one it has on now has been on for a year with no issues (other than the single spec of dust I got caught under it when putting it on, it's off to the side so can stay there).
