  • Does anybody have a Nokia N71 or other S60v3 based symbian phone?

    I recently got a Nokia N71 phone (runs S60v3 O/S)

It has integrated wifi and GPS reciever, but the GPS software on the Nokia phones is a subscription service.

I can't say I'm too impressed with the inbuilt software...

Does anybody else have the same, or similar phone? Can you recommend good software for it, particularly that work with the GPS?

      Hi,

I have an E71, with the inbuilt GPS as well. Nokia maps should work fine without using any GPRS data as long as you de-activate A-GPS (which is assisted GPS and uses the gprs data to help find your position faster). If you dont want to pay, then you can look at the map as your moving, however you can't get directions unless you pay for the service which isn't very expensive anyway.

Another program I use is TomTom, however I beleive they have discontinued support for mobile platforms as everyone was just pirating their software. This means it doesn't support the inbuilt GPS - you need an external one. If you do a search theres a program called GPSd which simulates a bluetooth external GPS device, however I wasn't able to get it to work - I had an external GPS anyway which I use when I use TomTom.

Other than that, theres a few more, apparently Route66 is also quite good, you could check that out as well. Ta

There is a working copy of Route 66 out for s60 OS so you should be good.

Otherwise not sure but search if TomTom has created a mobile version. I know they have PDA versions for WM5 and WM6

            Hi,
I've got one of the 6110 Navigators and I know the Route 66 turn-by-turn software works across most s60 phones (even the Samsung i560 that uses Symbian). That's a pay once rather than the new Nokia maps service which costs for the turn-by-turn.
Try the mobile phone forum of Whirlpool too. A lot of people there have gotten TomTom6 to work with an internal GPS via a hack or I've been told that TomTom7 works out of the box with internal.
The third option is Garmin mobile XT that a number of people have had success with.
Both are free turn-by-turn once you've bought the software.
Route 66 makes you pay for map updates (I'm still running Q1 2007) but I think TomTom and Garmin offer some free map updates.

                    +1 vote for garmin xt!

I loaded this onto my Nokia 6110 Nav and it works a treat.

search torrents for garmin xt symbian (or N95 version as they use integrated GPS). Then find the map pack you want.

I put Australia and the Malaysian/Singapore maps as I am about to go live there for 3 months.

Great GPS software that takes advantage of the built in GpS.
and suddenly, nothing happened, but it happened very suddenly mind you.
