Wanting to upgrade Sega Astro City Control Panel

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys,

When I opened up my Astro City control panel today I noticed a nest of cables that is attached to the central part of the panel. I'm not quite sure what it's used for and if it's easy to remove as I'm thinking of removing the panel to punching 6 holes so that it will turn into a street fighter style control panel. Most YouTube videos I've gone through doesn't show the wires in their videos so I'm not quite sure what mine is used for...

Also, I have semitsu joysticks and am thinking of changing them to sanwa ones. Upon removing my old semitsu, I found that there are two plates holding the joystick together. They seemed to be glued onto the panel. Do you guys reckon it's something easy to remove?

Any thoughts or ideas would be highly appreciated. Thank you!

The wires are the control panel ground/earth (I always get them confused). It safely grounds the metal components of the control panel to make it electrically sound.

The joystick plates are welded onto the CP. You will be able to get new sticks that fit the mounts, but I can't remember the type off the top of my head. Just google around and you'll find a heap of info.

Thanks mate so I'm wondering why some cabinets have it and some don't? Is it safe to remove and relatively easy to put them back when I take the panel out to drill the holes?

Perfectly safe to remove and a simple matter of just reattaching the wires when you put the CP back in.

Have you considered buying a new 6 button CP instead of drilling holes? You could buy a secondhand fully populated panel, secondhand unpopulated panel or brand new repro unpopulated and then get a newly printed decal installed.

Hey mate thanks for the suggestion and I have. I have ran into certain problems. For example, the panels are out of stock from Australian shops or people don't want to just sell you the CP. I go to ebay and they sell cheaply made ones or genuine ones which cost like 480 with joysticks buttons and wires but thats not including shipping. Then There are the 2nd hand panels which looks like crap and they have the wrong sticks or buttons so I still have to fork out extra cash and still cost 198 USD without shipping. I'm thinking maybe it will be a lot easier for me to just drill the damn holes. lol

Astro panels, even the stainless (licensed by sega sanwa made) ones should have a screw thread for a nut to screw onto - so you can reinstall your field ground wires to that point.

If a panel doesnt i suppose you could always use the joysticks screw/thread and double up its purpose, as that steels connected to that piece of control panel

Having a quick look at those mounts i wouldve thought this type of stick would mount up. I suppose you could ask the seller for measurements from hole to hole to make sure? Edit: I see what you mean, regarding needing S bracket

youd need to adjust the joysticks wiring to suit sanwas as it uses a single plug instead of individual microswitch connectors

Yea since my mount have two extra bracket that holds the semitsu in place, I might have to buy this plate for the sanwa. It's the second mounting plate https://akishop.jp/products/joystick...f-tp-8y-custom

Btw speaking of adjusting the wiring, is there a diagram of how to get it done? The link you sent with their 5pin harness, where does the other 5 loose wire ends go? Thanks.

So youd need to grab just one of your Ground wires from your current 4 you have for your existing setup (as that uses 4 switches, with 2 wires each, 1 being a ground for each), and then obviously connect the up down left right

You can either cut, solder and heatshrink..

Or, if youre like me and you like reversible options , id crimp some blade connectors on end of the 5 pin harness, and connect them into the female connectors currently there

Dont quote me as im going based on visual, but from memory itd probably be the smallest blades

Easy part about this, is even if you mess up which direction goes to what wire, you can simply unplug it, and try the next one :lol

ps. did the demag button fix your picture?

Hey mate thanks for your posts. I haven't yet because right now I have disassembled the joysticks and buttons to have a closer look at the wires and exactly what I need to buy and do to get my cabinet working the way I want it. I'm in the processing of cleaning some of the PCBs as they are Suuuuuuper dirty. I've got some 70% isopropyl alcohol wipes are they good enough or should I get 100% ones or what do you guys use to clean your boards and get rid of rust?

Just out of pure curiousity, when the cab is powered back on, give demag a press before trying out your wand and let us know the results

With the exception of using iso wipes on the JAMMA finger connectors / on old console carts (ive used those 70% ones with no side effects thus far), i havent had overly dirty or rusty pcbs to be fair. Id probably just buy compressed air in a can i suppose for dust or dirt.

Probably some other guys on here who could chime in for this one :D

Ok so cause you're such a cool guy and answered heaps of my questions, I went downstairs and powered the arcade then push the demag switch. It made a buzzing sound and now I think the colours look even. I don't seem to notice the dark patches of colour around the left area. Hey what do you know! 😀
