Super Hang On mini ride on restoration

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

It has been a few years I have logged in... I even had a hard time to find out on which Arcade forum I had posted my Outrun restoration 😬 (https://www.aussiearcade.com/forum/a...tion?p=1512653)

However I have got a new Arcade which is in need of some love. 😊

Probably the frequency of updating this new topic will not be very high as I've got limited time to work on the cab. But I will post my updates if there are any 😉

Everything works, my only task is to stop the rust and do some repair on the wood to make sure the cab will survive.

For starters:

Looks good mate. I'm jealous. You have both the control panel and the seat unbroken. That is very rare. Normally one or both are buggered. If you got either of them remade with injection molds you would have a few buyers that's for sure. Looking forward to seeing how it turns out. I'd love to get any pictures you have of the cabinet as mine was smashed up by the previous owner.

Cheers,

Andy

Thanks. I will do my best to take good pictures while I work on it. I think remaking them with injection molds is not soon or never going to happen. I have never done that before (bad excuse, better: I don't got tools for it), also I first have to find out how to unmount the motor body/panels. 😱 I need to remove the motor from the frame so I can take care over the frame. Perhaps you know how to remove those small bolts (some kind of worn out mini hex?) on the panels?

Here comes the new photo-serie: 😊

I did a bit of inspection here and there and also I couldn't hold myself to do a bit of cleaning and polishing. I decided to work a bit on the right side of the bike so I could find out if I made any progress 😆

Before:

IMG_6083.thumb.jpg.838f38361746811dbe4d43a1bd2cfa09.jpg

After:

IMG_6086.thumb.jpg.6ae6de560d89e6f70d2082cf2c76097d.jpg

It was hard working as I did polish it manually, but that shine after it... In real life it even looks better than on the picture. 🤩

I can't wait to see all plastic shiny like this!

IMG_6089.thumb.jpg.88394d856e34d868a57efe1af2bfe4ad.jpg

Than I did some testing on the floor mat..

2 or 3 of these buckets with water came from it:

IMG_6095.thumb.jpg.22f4bb0faad0a51a975520dc9b5346e1.jpg

It's not even well cleaned especially the edges, but I guess the difference is visible though:

IMG_6096.thumb.jpg.1e78de860f2097336f8653fa7a6da375.jpg

Also I have found the manual!

IMG_6099.thumb.jpg.b693235685230b4c407316b57e08854a.jpg

It seems like a mouse lived inside the cabinet and they've eaten the manual as breakfast and some owner have thrown it away... Also some wires are eaten 😲

Last but not least: I FOUND ONE OF THE TOOLS THE (digital 😉) MANUAL IS REFERRING TO!

It took me 0.00000001% of the time needed for sanding to post this... 😳😜

All elements of the first photo are sanded and received the first layer of paint.

I should have bought a sandblaster 🙄

Anyway I am glad I can assist the universe to save another Arcade for the future. 👽

Thanks for the pics mate. You've probably already got the panels removed but mine were bad too. I used WD40 with some and had luck but had to cut a slot in the top of some with a dremel to be able to unscrew them. One i had to grind the entire head off to remove the base plate. And i also wouldn't be doing injection molding myself. I'd use a business if i was going to do it but you wouldn't want to do that unless you had a list of guaranteed sales that would ensure you didn't lose money.

You're welcome.

I've drilled all rivets from one side out except for the bottom... had to remove the frame for that and am working on that frame first now... it's 40% sanded 😊

It was a very good idea to first clean the carpet for an hour or so.... as I was now able to remove a clean carpet with a rusty bottom and ruptures in it 😂

current state:

including the dents caused by the rust... for the historical value 😊

Oh hey, looks like I should be following this. I also have a Super Hang On ride-on I am in the process of restoring though it's a bit further behind in my backlog. I finished 3d rendering what I could of the broken cabinet I had for @Andyj965 over on KLOV. I also had to completely separate my motorcycle body from the frame. I was able to drill out the rivets at the bottom, but it wasn't easy!

I'm hoping I can come up with a more friendly solution when it comes to putting it back onto the frame but we'll see. I've sanded one body panel, with one to go. I should probably also sand the CRT bubble, but before I go too crazy with that, I'm hoping to build a new cabinet and see if my game even boots as I bought it in pieces from the last guy who intended to restore it. So I'll be following this closely!

Welcome to AA mate. You've got good timing. I've only just started playing around in the last few days putting the plans you made into a format that I could get cut by CNC. Like you I've got a number of projects but mine all move slowly. Only rough first attempt at the moment. I need to round off some corners around the smaller access doors to make it tie in with how the original was. Hopefully i'll be able to get them finished in the next few weeks and then get them cut.

Yeah - unfortunately I'm sure I messed up a ton in my 3d model in terms of making it exportable for any CNC cutting. I figure I'll just pencil in measurements and cut them with a jigsaw. Won't be as clean I suppose, but hopefully with some sanding it won't be too bad.

I wouldn't say that at all mate. I'm using your measurements for the files. I just wanted to make a way of easily getting it cut right and also making it easy for anyone else needing to do this. I don't trust myself enough to make it nice enough for this project. I'd end up with it looking like crap. This way I can just give a file to the CNC place and have them cut everything to fit from a single sheet.

I'm going to try to do a 3d model of the dash also but we'll see how that goes.

My Mini-ride on is almost done... I haven't been working on it for almost 2 months.

To do:

- find the original floormat (I hope)

- put the floormat on it 😊

- order stickers and put them on the frame.

- I think the monitor needs to be recapped... it acts strange when I turn the machine on... I am scared to discharge the monitor 😱

- repair and restore the coin mechanism (I guess the monitor needs to be removed for this...😊 )

The restoration was a lot of work, sanding all metal parts, sanding and putty (?) the cabinet over and over and over (and over) again, some soldering, etc. also I had to run against the clock(the weather) as I had to paint in an environment which is not isolated.

Meanwhile I was also communicating with https://www.arcadeartshop.com and gave him as much details as I could discover about the artwork.

He will now or soon be able to sell a complete package of stickers for the bike and base frame.

I lost contact with him, I will send him an E-mail after this post in an attempt to order the stickers I still need 😄

But also rebuilding the Arcade took some time, especially the handlebar... I had to partially repaint it, because I mounted the throttle (which removed the paint from the handlebar) too far on the handlebar...

Later on in the process I also didn't take as much pictures anymore as I did before... But, I still got a lot of photo's... here are a few 😊

Interesting...good to know that the inner bike frame can be removed from the base. I wasn't aware of that and just gouged a bunch of my wall on the way into my basement lol. I was afraid to break the pot that controls the steering as you lean. I'd be interested in those stickers. I had bought some from Europe but it seems to be missing some which was kinda a bummer. I was nervous as heck the first time I did it too. I haven't seen how a CRT is mounted in the cabinet as mine arrived broken....but you might not need to discharge it to remove it from the cabinet. If you're able to take off the bubble and disconnect the cables to the chassis without getting close to the flyback wire/anode cap you should be able to unplug it and lift it straight out.

As for discharging it, I can give you advice, but it's kinda a dime a dozen. It's the concern of it that is hard to get past mostly. If you're looking to over come it, buy some nice insulated rubber gloves, and a discharge tool, you'll feel a bit better than some of the more experienced people who just seem to say "Oh yeah, shove a screw driver under there with an alligator clip". Ultimately the tools are basically just that, but the peace of mind of buying a specific tool might help you feel a bit more at ease.

As for your game, it looks really good! I hope to get there some day lol. Super bummed on the fact that the throttle cable is missing from mine. It seems custom unfortunately so I doubt I'll find a way to hook that up in the same way. I bought handlebars from an upright hoping it might be the same, but it's not. I found some electric scooter handle that seems to use a 5k ohm pot with 3 connections. I'm hoping it's 1:1...but considering the original manual lists it as a volume pot I'm not sure whether or not the original (or this pot) is linear or logarithmic. I think volume pots are typically logarithmic...I've got quite project ahead of me lol.

haha yeah I have also lost some wall while moving it in haha

I'm not sure if it is possible to remove the bike from your base.... At least it will not be easy unless your base is not rotten.

I believe I was lucky? It has been a fight with all those rotten screws, I ended up grinding 50% (?) of them off with a mini grinder... ending in the hospital with a splinter under my eye-bol. Even though it was a historical piece of Arcade which would stay forever with me I decided to let it remove as it was stabbing... so, ALWAYS WEAR YOUR SAFETY GLASSES 😊

Anyway... I was able to remove the big nuts with a long torque wrench, I only had to buy a 22mm (I believe) socket for it.

From what I remember it can be enough to only remove the two nuts from the backside, then you might be able to move or hammer the frame to the back and lift it off.

I was afraid to break the pot that controls the steering as you lean I'd be interested in those stickers. I had bought some from Europe but it seems to be missing some which was kinda a bummer.

He already replied my Email and told me that he is going to add them to his webshop today... from what I already have seen they look really tight.

Yeah doing the job with a discharging tool would make me feel a lot better than the screw driver with alligator clip 😄

But I don't know how such a tool looks like and where to buy it....

Ouch! Good to know. I know I should wear my safety glasses but sometimes I'm lazy...as for the discharging tool I bought mine from Bob Roberts, but he's in the US. You can see how he makes them here: https://www.amazon.com/Golden-Age-SnufferStick-Voltage-Discharge/dp/B07HPCMFNV Probably not too feasible to ship it out there, but knowing how it's made and comparing it to others might be helpful..

This one looks good: https://www.amazon.com/Golden-Age-SnufferStick-Voltage-Discharge/dp/B07HPCMFNV Though, with a rounded tip you might have trouble getting underneath the anode suction cap (which is the reason screwdrivers tend to be used).

Both links are the same 😊 however I see those tools are looking just like the screwdriver-alligator clip homemade safety tool. Unfortunately I couldn't find such tool for sale.

But the good news is that I have just ordered the floormat for the Super Hang-on. I found that not all Super Hang-On's got the same floormat. Mine was the version with black striped rubber. So I have ordered this:

618645174_superhang-onmat.thumb.jpg.16fa9fd542f5226afda5c86c7bbf0f86.jpg

On the same store I also found "my" Outrun floormat, which I was passively looking for some years.

Outrun.jpg.8fe2f2fe0e4cade33d6c1e08de756b8f.jpg

The photo is the black color, but grey can also be ordered... only problem is they sell them per 10 roles, which makes it €410 ($481) while I only need a very small piece... 1 role is already way too much. So I skipped the Outrun floormat... even though I am excited to have the Super Hang-on floormat tomorrow! 😄

Hopefully the mini ride on stickers are also soon online... for the finishing touch.

(There are "Super Hang-on stickers" for sale, but those are for the upright arcade... those can not be used for the base and motor. https://www.arcadeartshop.com/product/super-hang-sticker-set-29-pieces-uk-usa-versions/)

Oops, here was the link: http://therealbobroberts.net/sb.html

Yeah, I had bought that upright sticker kit and figured it would be better than nothing, so...I'll be interested to see how this one looks

My Outrun doesn't have that type of a floormat, Mine has grooved channels like this:

aaah thanks for the link! That solves one of the things that gave me a bad feeling about it: 'just wrapping wire around a screwdriver'... it slips right off.... but I have to make a hole in the screwdriver 😄

Thanks for letting me know about that Outrun floormat.... It made me think... why all those different floormats on the Arcades.

Probably it was not so important and they just bought the floormat which was available in the region of build.

I just can buy that grey grooved one, but I feel resistance as it is not the one which is on it right now...

Meanwhile I mounted the floormat on the Super Hang-on...

Before:

floormat-before.thumb.jpg.c3f5ec97444f0b19944e08777c9e082b.jpg

After: floormat-after.thumb.jpg.ecda1ecf264bd082625ad2ecb3e9f856.jpg

AFTER putting the floormat on the Super Hang-on I started to think again... and I guess I have put the wrong floormat on my Super Hang-on!

It is the same floormat as the one which was there when I bought it, but this machine has been in multiple Arcades and I think that they have replaced the original floormat in one of those.

- It was strange to see those screws going through the floormat (however I did it too)

- All Super Hang-on flyers show grey floormats which are cut smaller than I did (I just 'copied' how it was when I bought it)

- I have never seen a photo from an other Super Hang-on Mini Ride On with these floormats... but that's not a very valid argument as this might be the 'European region'-floormat. There are not so many (none?) photo's online from the 80s and 90s on which you can see the real original (not restored) Super Hang-on Arcade.

Anyway... Knowing this... who says that the pyramid floormat on my Outrun Upright is the original floormat... perhaps the grooved grey one was there when it came from the factory... 😱😄
