Double Dragon Cabinet Restoration

Recommended Posts

Hey guys need some advice. Just aquired a 1987 Double Dragon , spent about 5 hours on it to get it playable. Now I need to work on the cabinet. It looks like most of it is particle board, has some water damage on the top and bottem of cabinet. I have already gutted it removed monitor, wire harness, power supply and everything else. Now I have an old empty particle board shell. I am going to just rebuild the whole cabinet. What materials should I use? Any advice would be welcome.

Thanks,

Steven

If your gonna rebuild then ply is best, but it's heavy and exy. Next best would be MDF I spose, just be careful of the dust as it aint healthy (and don't just use those paper masks, next to useless).

But if you wanna keep the orig cab I saw an interesting post on MYOC about how to repair a water damaged cab, was very very useful. I can't look for the link right now but I'll look for you tonight if you like.

Personally I would think restoring the cab is the best bet, spose it depends on how bad the damage is.

Good luck on your project mate, sounds like fun :D

The cab sounds like its an Aussie LAI.. Big bastard, and just as heavy.. Not too desirable on the 'collectable' front I think, because of the size and weight..! I suppose though if it has original artwork, marquee and CP it mat be worth restoring, just depends on how bad it really is. I think lamintated (black / white etc) MDF would be a good option, 1800 x 900 sheets go for about $60.00 or so.. A coupe of those and your well on your way. Could even use your existing cab as a stencil for the basic profiles.

Sorry guys if the pictures are to large but I am new to this and barely figured out how to get them on here in the first place. I took some pictures to give you an idea of what im working with, The side art is long gone and there is some kind black plastic glued to both sides. The marquee is fine as is the bezel. I have to replace the graphics on the control panel though. The Ballast for the marquee is burnt, the monitor has numbers permantly burned into it. Also both of the locks for the 2 front cabinets are gone, hence the duck tape. The coin boxes are also gone. This is gonna be a project.:D

Well, I went out and bought a couple sheets of MDF today, not laminated but I guess I can just paint the sides. I also bought a new transformer and starter for the marquee light. Ripped the whole cabinet down to just the base, it is the only thing still worthy of keeping. So ill cut out the new cabinet tomorrow at work and maybe have it assembled by tomorrow night. I have been taking pictures through this whole process, so ill post them later. :evil

Hey Steve, I think this was originally a sega Zaxxon cabinet, frogger used the same cabinet also. Any chance of some dimensions or measurements as I'd like to build a copy for my zaxxon board and control panel?
