  • Printing - Urgent question

    Hi all,

My work is about to sell a HP DesignJet 4500PS plotter CHEAP.

I've read that it will print in Colorfast Adhesive Vinyl

So, question is, would this make a good printer for artwork ?

Let me know so I can tell them if I want it or not.

    Thanks

I do not know that printer, but we have an HP DesignJet 500 at work. Find out the drive belt part number (for the carriage), as well as the encoder strip part number. Check to see if you can buy them over the net, as HP are unable to supply these parts to us after only 5 years of use. I did source them on the net, but you would want to be sure you can get them before you buy. I can give you a leed on a good rapair company if you decide to buy and it needs a service.

Its a pretty old printer. I wouldn't want to try and sell any adhesive prints printed on it. If you want to go commercial you really need an Eco-solvent printer.

Just had a quick look at that model. Its RIP (Raster Image Processor). is hardware and internal to the printer. USUALLY (I dont know about this model) it can be troublesome and painful if you cant use a software RIP.

It really comes down to what the cost is, and primarily what you want to use it for.

Supplies are fine (inks) for this model but as Furballx says they discontinue models. The norm is 3 years. If the price is right go for it.

Dont be fooled by advertised prices on the net and compare the price they are selling. Technology in the printing games is the worst devaluer of all tech items IMO.

Well I’m talking about $150 inc inks (4 or 5 of each)
I was thinking of printing some sideart and for other people that wanted some done (and only charging for the vinyl)
The thing is HUGE and it’s weight is like 180KG’s
If it’s not that good for printing artwork then I’ll give it a miss.

          Thanks guys

For $150 it would have to be worth a go wouldn't it? Even if the outcome isn't awesome, at least you have had a crack yourself and learnt a bit along the way?

Well, we have just got the newer 4520PS (to replace the 4500) and I am allowed to use it outside hours for printing on vinyl is I want
Just thought that if it did the job I could just do it at home and for other people too (still might be able too) I'll get some and try it and see how it goes.

If it was a 'yes get it as it's awesome' I would have. But I don't really have the room for it if not.

Oh, and thanks to all for the info

I saw someone just recently offloading this model for $10k new (no idea what it's actually worth). At $150 maybe you could grab it for someone on here, someone would be keen I'm sure.
