Common and Uncommon RAM for PCBs

Recommended Posts

Hi people,

I am looking at ordering a selection of RAM for repairs.

I was wondering if anyone has any input to some types of RAM it is worth getting, and perhaps also rare types to keep an eye out for.

Is there already a resource like this?

Cheers

I can pick up some of the ram listed here from futurlec.com.au - some people don't like the fact they are based overseas, but I have had no problems with the past 3 years os so I have dealt with them...

Cheers

Unicorn electronics is the source for me.

Unfortunatley its hard to know what ram types you will come across until you start working on boards. If you are lucky you will end up with a lot of scrap not-worth-fixing boards, I find that most ram types I need are to be found on those. Also if everytime you buy RAM you buy at least 25 chips you will end up with a useful stock.

It also depends on what vintage of boards you intend to work on, early 80s boards use different ram chips from the later 80s/90s boards.

Some common RAM you should have is:

2114, used in LOTS of pcb's.

4116 for older Williams stuff.

5101 used as memory back up in older pins and some vids. (Make sure you get the low power version)

And maybe some 2101.

Most of the other RAM used I wouldn't stock if you don't have a large board collection or repair many boards.

Mind you, this is mainly for older pcb's.

Regards,

Johns-Arcade.
