Konami 054544 / 054986A Reproduction Board

Question

Thought it may be of interest to others here that I have made a reproduction of the Konami 054544 which is used on the Xmen etc. I know that there are some other reproductions available, but mine is a bit different. All the parts are now on the top of the board only! Like the others, it will be available without the ASIC and the AD1868R.

Thanks Trav. I have a few prototype boards on the way to me now, should be here next week to confirm everything is good with them. All being good, I will then do a production run.

I will also be making a 054986A replacement for the Lethal Enforcers and G.I. Joe etc boards. It will be the same as this one with all components on the top of the board only.

What does the bottom look like?

The HUGE problem with one of the others on the market is the large size of the pads on the bottom of the PCB which leads to solder shorts under the PCB and around the pins being used.

You have to solder the pins VERY lightly to keep that from happening. It's a real pain in the ass.

There is nothing on the bottom, which is why I do not show it. All the components are on the top and the pads for the 44pin Asic are standard TQFP44 landing pads. The pads on the one you show also looks about the right size, but it is hard to tell from a photo.

The solder pads on the bottom side need to be the absolute minimum in size to help keep from bridging under. If yours is designed that way, I'll take 10 boards, shipped to Texas.

I just received the first test boards of the 054544 module. Very happy with how they turned out. Now I am just waiting on the rest of the components to arrive from Digikey so I can put them together and test to confirm that they are right before getting a production run made.

Bugger, I realised after the manufacturing had started, that I made a mistake on the 054986A board. Have just fixed up those issues and have sent them off to be made.

First board assembled. Hoping to be able to install it into a board over the weekend and confirm everything is correct. If they are, then I will be able to start assembling them while I am waiting on the (corrected) 986A boards to arrive.

Some good news and some bad news. The good news is that the board is working in a board now and the bad news is that I messed up two tracks and routed them to the wrong pins. They had to be inside layer tracks as well, which made it hard to cut them and run a couple of jumper wires to confirm that was all that was wrong. But I have an Xmen 6 player board running on the bench at the moment and its working great. Very happy to see it working, just a shame that I need to get another lot of boards made with those couple of tracks corrected.

Just an update on this. The final revision of the 054544 has been sent off for production. Also have a few of the 054986A coming so that I can do the final tests before sending them off for a production run. So hoping to have some of these available for sale in about 2 weeks time.

The first lot of boards has arrived. Unfortunately it beat the components order, which should be here in about a week, so I have only been able to make up 8 so far. 1 is already spoken for, so there is only 7 left of this lot, but more in a couple of weeks.

I'll take 3x for X-Men and 2x the other type... shipping to USA 75077. Let me know a total and your PayPal please.

Would you like me to send the 054544 modules now, or would you prefer to wait until I have the 054986A modules completed and tested and send them all together as one order?
