I never really got into PacMan and such in the arcades.
I did have a PacMan type game on my Amiga 500, I liked that one. Really fast with great controls.
So here's my opening score.

Mixing it up a bit OOO, not waiting for Friday?

With all the connection problems with AA over the last few days and the uncertainty with getting access to this site, I figured I would launch earlier just in case AA is down over Thursday or Friday this week.
Even with the site down we can still play, so released earlier so this could happen just in case. (I could not log on for two days this week and then another day.)

Never played this one back in the day, I remember on the Atari 2600 that this was considered better than Pacman although I never had it (but I think I do now). Have played just the one game of it so far, hopefully I can improve on this score.

Spent 3hrs totally pulling apart my 9yr old PC that I have my vert cab running on........sort of like the shovel with three different handles and two spades......but really it is mostly original with only one HDD change and a new Video card for Calamity's drivers.

Anyway I spread it all over the floor....even taking the PSU apart and I was going give it a good clean and replace every fan, but it seems the fans are "out of fashion" the small 40mm fans on the MB cost $20 and the 80mm were the same. So I only bought one fan and that was for the PSU.....the funny nerd at the shop said people don't replace PSU fans it's better to buy a new PSU. I said here is my fan.....banter from him about being careful.....me laughing about being wreckless.....went home with cider and put it all back, cleaned and lubed my other fans, and she purs again instead of groaning. I had to cut off the new and join the old plug on the fan so it work and then I had sync issues on start up and had to reset my boot res by connecting my old CRT PC monitor, I dunno what I would do without that, the future is looking harder and harder. Oh well still running 30 year old hardware in some of my cabs, perhaps I will be fuc^ed before the cabs are :)

So after all that I had a game and beat my recent PB on my cab and came here to find it is not really a big score :)

Just as well, since there are no patterns for this game. They made sure that all the Pac-man players couldn't use their patterns.

Namco jap version? Which romset is that? I didn't think there was one, as Midway released this game themselves. Jr Pac-Man is better yet...no patterns, and no random fruit (you always get 5000 point mugs from board 7 on).

I assumed this game had no patterns, that's great news, I never bothered trying to learn playing PacMan with patterns I just can't see the point, that's not my kind of gaming.

Namco jap version? Which romset is that? I didn't think there was one, as Midway released this game themselves.

Just checking now and I could not find the NAMCO version in MAME. So it looks like it is not available.
However if you play the NAMCO version on console, and if my memory is correct, you will find they start as a pattern, the monsters break out to their corners like the original Pac-man at times and the monsters don't like to follow you into the tunnels as much, making it a lot easier. And if my memory is again correct, I used to play this version of Ms Pacman on the Namco Museum Volume 3 for PS1.

http://i1120.photobucket.com/albums/l500/sno-bee/Namcomuseum_Vol_3_PAL_2_zpsty7g7iql.jpg (http://s1120.photobucket.com/user/sno-bee/media/Namcomuseum_Vol_3_PAL_2_zpsty7g7iql.jpg.html)

So bottom line if you lived in Japan BITD, I do not think they would see a MIDWAY logo and they may not have played the exact same code from General Computer, as the console version suggests.
General Computer you say? ... I like to share great stories, and if you are up to it, watch this really fascinating presentation from Steve Golson on the controversial creation of Ms Pacman and the gaming industry BITD ... who you say? ... just watch ... grab a meal as it goes for a while ...

Jr Pac-Man is better yet...no patterns, and no random fruit (you always get 5000 point mugs from board 7 on).
Jr Pac-Man is also a great game , never played in the MGL before either ... :rolleyes
I wonder what's harder in bonus points, a game that always gives 5,000 from board 7 on, or a game that gives you a lucky dip 100, 200, 500, 700, 1000, 2000 , 5000?
For the purists, you want a consistent 5000, however for the tough nuts it's random and on average much less. Lucky fruit ... maybe!

And come on Mr Fan, lets have that eulogy paragraph ... time's a ticking ... :026: ... and how about a better Donkey Kong Junior score ... what's happening? ... http://i1120.photobucket.com/albums/l500/sno-bee/Pacman_Machine_zpsb3b61f58.gif

I've always preferred Ms Pacman to the original but then this was a game that was in my local corner store for quite a while in an LAI cocktail. My highest ever score was in the 140,000's from memory in the dim dark ages of my youth. Very doubtful I could pull that off these days.

I can't do the pattern thing with any of these games. Could never be bothered learning them however I DO have a starting routine for each maze that I've developed over the years that just seems to be ingrained habit. It's only good for the first 5th of the maze and after that it's completely "freestyle" read panic and don't get eaten ;)

Cheers,
Brad

well, it's the 2nd or 3rd screen after the 1st junior intermission. Banana board is the previous maze with only 1 tunnel on either side, 2nd screen after the chase intermission.

it's something you wouldn't see much in the arcade, since you have to put the coin in during a pretty small window (although I used to once in awhile, and didn't know what triggered it at the time), but since we always start MAME up fresh with a machine boot-up and it starts right where that blue screen happens if you insert a coin right away, it's pretty common.

Fire_Power
19th March 2015, 06:17 AM
Yeah I was thinking the same thing about the real arcade coin timing. For me on Mame I use P1 start as a shift key with Fire to coin up and then quickly followed by P1 start so it happened a fair bit.

These pretzels are making me thirsty.

Yes, this is a part I hate. Get a random banana or 2 and all of a sudden your score is a LOT better.

Brad

I just now was 500 points below my current top score. A banana comes out, I internalise a giddy girly gasp of delight and head over towards it turning as many corners as possible to screw with the ghosts. I get halfway over the banana and need to follow it around a corner to complete the gobble. Queue a poorly made turn due to using an 8 way stick and not only do I miss the banana but I faceplant into Pinky :realmad:

Goddamn this game =/

Just got 14,500 on the first round, but died once doing so and in the end didn't beat my PB. Might find time for another quick try tomorrow.

Ugh why am I so bad at this

OK a bit better. Ended up chasing a banana half way around the map and committing suicide in the process :lol won't be improving on this. Go the black caps!

68,870 - can't see myself improving on this as it was largely luck :D and I'm off to the pub to watch the cricket.

My 'science' of playing pacman is based on frantic avoidance and wondering what the science of playing pacman is. Never got into any of them... except maybe Pacmania on the Amiga - that was cool :)

The final scoreboard standings are below ...

Any score over 50K is a good effort ? however 3 players break a century of thousands ? CrazyKongFan a truly great 112K for 2nd place and Brad finds his youth since BITD for a neat 3rd place 101K.
RMacauley just pips into 4th place at the death and a terrific score was posted by Fire_Power for a mighty top 5 finish ... :038:
Nicko71 just missed the top 5 for 6th place and Rat finds some form and time for 7th place.

OOO takes out Game 4 ? woka ? woka ? woka ?

Gorf and Hyper Olympic are currently in play, Games 5 and 6 ?

Good score OOO. I was hoping to get a few more games in before the deadline, but have been busy the last few days and didn't have time to sit down and play out a whole game. I think my top score is about 140K or so, but I may have gotten good fruit selection on that one (don't remember now, it was several years ago). That's the one weak thing about Ms Pac...they did a good job making it random (vs Pac-Man's patterns), but blew it on the random fruit.

Very good scores from a lot of players here. Always find the PAC games tough. Well done OOO
