Great game - wasn't its' claim to fame that it was the first arcade game with speech?

Anyone know the difference between this Midway version (boscomd.zip) and the orig (bosco.zip)?

Great game - wasn't its' claim to fame that it was the first arcade game with speech?

The KLOV website mentions the speech but doesn't say if it was the first arcade game with speech. To hear a game talk really was mind blowing the first time I experience it - for me it would have been in Hyper Olympics/Track & Field from memory.

Anyone know the difference between this Midway version (boscomd.zip) and the orig (bosco.zip)?

I had a very quick look at both as I didn't know which ROM Foot was nominating, I couldn't see a difference between the two - slight difference in one dip switch but I don't believe this effects game play. My guess would be that it's just a licensing difference. :unsure

I don't think I ever played this in an Arcade, but something about the motherships that you blow up is familiar - possibly I played a port on the C64?

Hmmmm, I do remember some talk of this being the first speech, but AFSIK this title goes to Bezerk?

Yeah great game, loved Bosconian in the arcades, fun gameplay, reasonable difficulty curve and value for 20c :)

Yep Berzerk was the first mass produced Arcade game with speech. Each word cost a ridiculous amount of $ to sample and code. First time I saw a Berzerk upright cab, It's attract mode freaked me out a bit by saying 'coin detected in pocket' - I thought it really knew I had 20c pieces in my pocket :D

Oh, thanks for killing my Berzerk adulation Andy :D I haven't heard of / played Stratovox. I did a quick google, and it also came out in 1980 like Berzerk - I wonder if it was a race to the first game with speech ? Stern spent US $30k on synthesizing thirty words for Berzerk, amazing!

I'm third on MARP on Stratovox with 60k, love that game :)

Seems to be a few titles claiming first with speech, which one is correct? I think Bosconian is NOT the first, but I'm not sure about Bezerk and Stratovox?

Anyone know the difference between this Midway version (boscomd.zip) and the orig (bosco.zip)?

Just had a couple of games of each version, just different patterns in the placement of the motherships as far as I can tell, one doesn't seem easier than the other to me.

Played both for interest sake and the patterns of the green space stations is different , the midway one puts them in a more bonus stage like formation where the original is more scattered, try it :)

Yep, just post a screen shot of your score. Just double check page one of this thread to make sure you are using the correct ROM and DIP switches.

Each game in the MGL lasts for 2 weeks, this game is in week 1, R-Type is due to finish this Sunday at 7pm Qld time if you'd like to get a score in for that game.

Any other questions, just ask.

Welcome to the MGL, the more the merrier.

It could be just a really rare isolated bug within the game code (or Mame even) and I'm just unlucky enough to have found it twice. Will have another game or two tonight, need to overtake DKong's score - that's about as high as I think I can climb on this one :lol

Finally had a crack at this tonight, a dedicated Monday night of Arcade gaming :) Very addictive game Bosconian, really makes you keep coming back.

I remember this from BITD but never got into it then, my coin was over all too quickly when I tried. As others have already said, it borrows heavily from a number of games, I also hear the player death sound from Dig Dug in there, when you shoot a blue ship.

Round 5 had me almost giving myself an aneurism, drove me bonkers, took me a lot of games to finally get through it. Loving this game though, good nomination.

Don't suppose anyone wants to share some tips for this one?

Got my 60k on about day 2 I reckon and can not progress further. Get to Level 4 most games, but even if I have 3 lives built up and burn all 4 lives 90% of the time and level 5 is not even worth talking about :cry

Seems to me that the enemies go mental from level 4 onwards and if it's dodging required (like when parachute hunting in Time Pilot) then I'm a lost cause on this game.

Is there any leeching in this game ? I know you can leave the last base for a while and go for more formation kills, those green 'something fighter' that come out, bit then condition wed starts and it gets a bit mad, time to kill the level.

Maybe brad/Rob can share their secrets, apart from just having more talent I mean :)

John73
23rd October 2012, 06:00 PM
The only other way I could work out to maximize your score is by taking out 5 cannons before killing the starship - should get you 5 x 200 + 1500pts as opposed to just killing it straight off.

My problem is that the longer the level goes the more pissed off the enemy ships get which means a quick death :(

RMacauley
23rd October 2012, 06:11 PM
On my 180K game for the first 3 stages I killed off the bases piece by piece and waited until condition red before destroying the last base. Beyond that I was avoiding things as much as possible while trying to kill off the bases. This ROMset gets very hard very fast. I've cleared 250K on the Bosco ROMset.

It is possible to leech indefinitely. I'm not saying how but no way in hell am I going down that path on this game (INP available as proof :D). It's worse than parachute hunting.

I find I'm killing more turrets in the later stages rather than less, otherwise I die more from a spray of three or four bullets then I do planes or missiles.

I've been either hitting one side or doing a few laps around a base and then once one side has at least a couple missing I worry about lining up the centre bit... but then I suck at the lining up part.

I tried to update a very old video card in a Mame Cabinet I purchased so that it would allow screen rotation within Windows - the screen rotation in Mame worked, but the using of Windows side on was driving me insane - needless to say something went wrong now I can't even run Mame on it :lol

Thinking about putting the motherboard etc. from my failed (but I learnt a lot from) cocktail cabinet in this and flogging it off on here for some badly needed $$$.

Diagnosing PC crashing issues can be a right bastard a times - spent 10 years in the industry and did a lot of trouble shooting - can sometimes be as simple as removing a card, giving the contacts a good clean, blow out the dust that might be in port and reseating the card.

Yeah PC troubleshooting can be a right pain but thankfully I'm back up and running thanks to the VGA on the mobo, just needed some trusty sis drivers. I had similar probs when I built and set-up my Mame cab (mine is a vertical cocktail and I wanted to use MameWah which didn't support rotation - seemed to be a series of never ending, tail chasing problems. If it helps, I ended up coming to the conclusion that the graphics card had to have an nVidia chipset, I think these supported hardware based rotation and some versions had this integrated in the drivers. I ended up using a little freeware program called iRotate and, after considerable frigging about it works ok.

The AVGA card is actually an ATI card and Soft 15 requires an ATI card as well although I have got that going with an NVidia too.

Got a new ROM which I thought fixed my crashing ROM problems, but apparently not.

Can consistently get to Round 4 without losing a life, but that is where the fun and games end 99% of the time. Couple of 50k scores so I thought I might be chance of knocking of DKong's score but that was as high as I was likely to climb.

Been on the road since Friday, riding down south for the MotoGP Phillip Island. Have my travel mgl kit with me though, tablet with mame4droid and wiimote :) will have a final crack at this tonight, but first, beer !

This game will end at 7pm Qld time (8pm AEDST) tonight. I may not be around to do the final scores, Jamma or another mod can do it if they want otherwise I'll get to it next week.

Game 4 will be posted shortly as I won't have time to do it tonight.

I've found it's all about the diagonal shots in this game. The Midway rom is stupidly different in difficulty compared to the original but constant movement on the diagonals is key for me.

I gave it a good try last night, the wiimote was OK as a controller, and plays and looks great on my asus tablet. but I couldn't beat the score got on my cocktail machine back home. Bosonian needs pretty precise shooting reckon, esp the bases.

John I can't do scores sorry, I am restricted to Mobile device at the moment. Maybe Brad, Dkong, or the very absent WTV can step in ? I don't get back home until Wednesday.

Played another couple of games this arvo with no sleep after night shift, couldn't beat my 89k I'm sure I have got a bit over 100k in the past, but nowhere near 200k well done folks with the big scores :)

Last night I was reading a slashdot post about console gaming being dead which of course lead to the same old debates, one person said what about kids who have never played Mario and only played Angry Birds on tablets etc? they will not rush to the next gen consoles when released? One poster replied "Bad parenting has been around for ages" LOL I was thinking that :)

Today when I fired up a couple of games of Bosconian, my son Ollie (9yrs) came up and said, "Dad is that game made by the same people as Rally X?" well stuff me after years of playing each I had only realized that when it was posted here.....made me proud of him, and me as I must be a good Dad ;)
