Game Introduction

Scrolling shoot-em-up game. Use your force to help kill the aliens. Pick up power-ups that appear when you kill "Armos". Power-ups help you get stronger. They include air-to-ground, reflective, air-to-air, heat-seeking lasers, and speed-ups.

The longer you hold down the fire button, the stronger your shot will be. When at full strength your shot will kill every enemy that it touches. A normal shot will only kill one enemy.

More detailed information on R-Type and game play can be found here: http://www.arcade-museum.com/game_detail.php?game_id=9219

I've played this a little bit in the past, mainly on the SMS recently but it's very close to the arcade version. I was never able to beat the third boss but managed it this morning, using the keyboard too.

Grumpy old man post: The only horizontal shooter I have ever liked is Scramble :)

Reckon I'll play this one on the Xbox360 / big TV. As I don't really care :lol

I just played a few games today. That first boss is cake.
If no upgrades, then charge the laser and shoot when the tail comes down.
If you have upgrades then launch the round thing at the boss. It sits inside the tail barrier and just shoots the boss easy.
Had over 100k but hadn't set up screenshots or something cause the way I used to get them dosent work ><
Ill have to try again to get a score.

It's no biggie with me, but we generally leave any tips until after the first week of the game. Just so you are aware :) I should probably point that out at the start of the game instructions so the new guys know..... my bad on that one.

I have played many similar titles and possibly a couple of sequels, but I was surprised to find that I didn't remember the enemies in this one, so I must not have played it much. I think it's OK, I'm a fan of shooters, this is not quite my favourite style but it's still good. I think the crazy side scroller Sexy Paradious is more fun :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8yMgwnUdVts

I must admit I'm not a fan. I had a lot of mates who loved it but I never got into it back in the day. I still can't get the hang of charging the firepower vs using the rapid fire and I think that's one of the keys to getting a decent score, especially for advancing past bosses. I'll give it more of a crack over the weekend when I can commit more time to it but currently my high score sits around 50K LOL. Did you play it a lot in your younger days ED_209 or are you a newish fan?

Maybe shows you the average age of MGL'ers :) R-Type came after the classic Arcade era, I only remember it as a Sega Megadrive game. Megadrive days I played Sonic, Jungle/Desert Strike, NHL95, Flashback :)

Haven't powered up my laser at all yet, but have a few days to myself now with family gone till sunday... will get a chance for some MGL'ing.

In my case it's not a dislike of the game just the fact that I seem to have hit a wall scoring wise.

Played it a lot at my local deli when it was new and still have a copy for the SEGA master system. Scored higher, but not as high as ED_209, during Funspot 2011.

I'll keep plugging away if only for second place or lower. :)

I did play this a fair bit on sega when I was young but I dont think I was as good then. Pelly and I started playing again a couple of years ago and we learned heaps coming back to it with a different understanding of how games work.

:lol I figured that might be the case. I wasn't really involved in the classic arcade era - one of the other games on the noms list, Fantasy Zone, was the first game I ever had (Sega Master System 1). I remember seeing games like Qix and Leisure Suit Larry but I was too little to be part of the arcade thing some of you guys may have experienced. Despite that I love the MGL for helping me appreciate it. I now really enjoy the classics like DK and Pac Man and also many of the other lesser knowns that have popped up in comps. Particularly the ones that I would've just passed off as old crap without ever taking the time to play properly.

John, whenever you want some tips just give the call. Truth is you could find it all on the net if you wanted anyway and with a game like this it won't make much difference. Practice and patterns.

Yeah I know I can look on the net, or download INP's - but we've been down this track - it's an MGL no-no :lol

I'll try and give this a decent bash on the weekend - I think I might just load up 100 credits and play with the continues to try and learn some of the patterns later on a bit better so that I don't lose three lives as soon as I get to somewhere new :redface

Seriously though, John's on the right track. Practice with continues got Pelly and I as far as we can go. Every time you hit an unknown spot you die over and over. If you use continues to learn where to move in the hardest spots you can keep your power ups and keep going. :D

Gotya - I'll convert my pay check tomorrow - by the time I pay for running expense, give the government the well earned taxes they need (to blow on next to nothing) I'll have about fifty 20c coins to play this game and improve my score :D

Yep, that worked for some machines but it was a really fine line between losing your coin and getting the credit, and drilling through a 20c aint that easy either. I remember we used to be able to shock ladybug with a 20c piece on the coin slot/panel by rubbing feet on carpet, then jumping and touching it for credits.

Thanks mate it's good to be back and competing (note I didn't say competitive LOL). Currently testing if getting drunk improves my R-Type. Although highest score continues to creep up slowly I think that's just through familiarity rather than magic skill improvement haha. I think it's one of those games where you can score more points the worse you do. The first time I killed the 3rd boss was my highest score because I had to repeat the third level a few times before I figured it out, now that I can do it on my first life I'm getting much lower scores.

Yep noticed that too. From seeing some of the screen shots, you really cash in on level 3 - so that may be a good place to die over and over :lol Unfortunately when I got to level 3 I died straight away on that stupid massive ship and not many points gained :(

Appears to me (correct me if I'm wrong someone) that each stage is broken up into about 3 or 4 checkpoints which you aren't notified off - so if you die at the end of a particularly good section and go back and redo it then you'll boost your score.

Having TG down is a real PITA as it's a good resource to see if certain tactics (leeching) are forbidden in games, I unfortunately don't know every game and if it's possible. From what I've seen and heard in this thread, it would be only minor leeching that is possible and probably allowed anyway :unsure

What you describe, and I was aware of that tactic, would be legal under TG rules (not that we're playing TG rules :)) because you can't do it indefinitely. TG's leeching rules were that as long as you weren't able to gain one or more lives for each life lost (as we saw in Xain D'Sleena) it was "point maximization" not leeching. In this case when you're on your last life you will have to finish the level and clear the next level as well to get enough points for another extra life.

As for restart points I think if you make it past the halfway point in a stage you start from there if you die with the exception of stage 3. Don't know about stage 8. I only ever got there using an invincibility cheat on the SEGA master system. Never got there on arcade even with continues.

Yeah that's what I was eluding to. The bonus ships are spaced far enough apart that it's really not possible to leech indefinitely. Having said that, they do allow parachute hunting in Time Pilot. My gut feeling on my skill level for TP though is that it's bloody hard to stay alive and keep doing it.... Anyway, this is probably a discussion for another time :D

What they allow for Time Pilot completely defies all logic compared to the leeching rules on other games. Not sure why it's allowed and yes it is a discussion for another time.

I know I said it was a discussion for another time, but I think without being able to see when the arcade TP record was set, that there was a very old arcade record set on TP which would have had to have used parachute hunting and this is probably why it is allowed to this day.

With what is going on with TG currently, maybe it's time to draw a line in the sand and purge all of the old TG records where there is no video proof of the scores - maybe we can debate this in the arcade/mame WR threads in the arcade section :)

I remember looking this stuff ages ago when I first got back into R-Type. I am pretty sure the WR for R-Type on TG is around the 600K mark..? I was sitting at 4th with 340 odd K... However on MARP the WR is around 800K which had the guy going through the whole game only loosing 1 life then it restarts all over again but harder the second time around I think...

Enjoyed a quick blast on this game, I don't have time to memorize the second boss movements so that's where it stops for me. These types of games are frustrating when you loose all your power ups on a difficult stage, some games manage to keep a better balance than others.

Learnt a few things tonight - letting the first boss live a little longer boosts score by about 10K :o Also it took me ages to work out how to beat the 2nd bloody boss but once that's done it's very easy :rolleyes

I also probably should have persevered on the that big arse spaceship that starts Stage 3 (or is that the actual boss? LOL) but I honestly CBFed now that game 2 is available!

FU R-Type if I was more motivated I'd delete you from the roms folder now that I'm officially done with Game 1 of MGL :lol

I like R-type although I'm not a huge fan of horizontal shooters, there's some nice bosses and stage designs (thanks in part to Alien/s it seems), a bit of innovation, and I like how you can choose how to use your main satellite, keep it in front/behind as a defensive shield or send it out and max your attacking power. Like has been mentioned in the thread it's probably an age thing as well and the late 80s was my main era for arcade gaming.

But it's one of those games where I'd rather be playing two player with a few mates instead of playing solo for high scores. Like most power up games you just get slaughtered after dying and going back to nothing (at least I do) which isn't nearly as annoying when your mate dies 2 seconds later and you can have some fun trying to edge past each others scores instead of always seeking the perfect first man in one player. Another thing I was thinking playing this solo is that sometimes I enjoy watching games almost as much as playing them, like I said I liked the overall stage and alien designs and it's a little hard to take in all the details when you're strafing and cursing all the time :).

No I didn't donate $7,800 to my friendly scorekeeper. If they find out about that scam in Nigeria we'll all be getting an inbox full of spam. :lol

Just managed to find the right level of Guinness consumption for proper R-Type play. :030:

Well done... I'm sure ED_209 or Pelly isn't finished with this one yet.

On the topic of Nigerian scammers - I had one email me two weeks ago, so I went along.... I think he got bored with me, he won't return any of my emails now. Got the fake bank documents and all from another email address. I told him that the bank guy who emailed me told me to send the documents to someone else who would give me a bigger share of the money. Damn it, I was gonna use that $9Mil to open my own arcade :cry

I'm definitely not finished. Just need that one golden run.

Well done Rob (and f#$&* you and your $@!*#^ and the #^*+@ m$@/&#/(! f@$/&!* horse you rode in on).

I don't have any scores hidden up my sleeve but I know what my one and only task for tomorrow is.

RMacauley

I did consider hiding my 399K but figured that knowing me I'd forget to submit it tomorrow. Probably due to being at the pub.

The down side of "showing my hand" is now I've fired up Ed_209 and probably Pelly. And I had plans for tomorrow that involved a silver ball not R-Type.

(f#$&* you and your $@!*#^ and the #^*+@ m$@/&#/(! f@$/&!* horse you rode in on)? But I don't own a horse. :unsure :lol

At this stage submitting for second just in case Pelly's got something up his sleeve besides his arm.

Don't think I'll get any better due to spending the afternoon trying to qualify for the ACDC pinball finals and enjoying a frothy or two.

Time Up!

Great start to MGL 16 and a very close finish. Congrats to Rob on winning game #1 (http://www.aussiearcade.com/usertag.php?do=list&action=hash&hash=1) .

Game #3 (http://www.aussiearcade.com/usertag.php?do=list&action=hash&hash=3) will be up in a couple of secs and final MGL points for game #1 (http://www.aussiearcade.com/usertag.php?do=list&action=hash&hash=1) will be posted shortly.

Finally got around to downloading and having a look at a 773K MARP score for this - holy crap :o

Some points of the game it almost looked like there was leeching going on, but I'd need to more info to be 100% - it could be just how the game is played to kill certain bosses at the end of levels.

A learnt a little bit about what I was doing wrong, but it seems like you just need a bloody good memory - get your ship in the right place and use your powerups mainly attached to your ship and it makes the game a whole lot easier - easier said than done though. Geez I miss the arcade days where you could watch someone do this in person. Bloody impressive how good some people are :sm1:

Remember watching in awe someone play xevious and pickup all the towers and extra lives and seeing the rallyx flag . I then asked while he was playing how they knew exactly where they were and he said see look the little crosshairs go red , :)
